- Today Ford launched its new car with an old name, and I'm afraid its sent our Trevor into a bit of a rant.
Firstly, on how Ford seem to be using old names inappropriately on new SUV EVs, and also reflects on how crap Ford have been naming cars in the past.
Ford don't give a monkey's. Doubtful anyone in the design process even remembers the original Capri.

I do not understand why they don’t make a “retro style” sports car and call it the Capri. Dodge did it with the challenger and it was a massive massive success.

There was a prototype Capri in the early 2000s that looked great, but never saw the light of day. It was reminiscent of the later VW Scirocco and BMW F21 1-series, but with mk1 Capri elements (still a 2/3 door coupe).
I've seen comments that "nobody would buy a coupe", but people buy the Mustang!
Whats really funny is the ad that came on at the end of this video was for the all new for kuga ford really are trolling us
In the 90s , naming the Probe the Capri would've made more sense than this.
I was amazed they didn't. With the side window shape I am surprised the Puma wasn't called Capri

I agree with your rant. The original Capri is head and shoulders above this new version. Why they cannot be more imaginative about these new cars. Capri is a sports coupe not a f..king horrible SUV.
I was excited to see the return of the capri, thinking it would a sports coupe....not a suv.
If it won't do lurid rear wheel drive drifts on damp roundabouts, it's a bit CRAPI.....

Reminds me of what Mitsubishi did with the Eclipse name, i have never forgiven them for sticking that name on a SUV.
100% agree. They could have called the new car the Ford 205 GTI, it would have about as much in common with that as a Capri.
At least with the Mini, the 500, the Beetle etc, you can see the clear nods to the original design and styling and they've given them a modern twist. With this, they've just picked a name out of their "discontinued brands" hat and run with it
In my opinion SUVs are appalling to look at- ALL OF THEM! They're often poorly driven, particularly on narrow B roads, hard to park in spaces not designed for them, and too expensive to buy....needless to say I will never own one.
The normal mustang should have been called the capri in Europe. And instead of naming a special edition Bullitt should have called it brooklands as very similar green

I couldn't agree more. I passed my test in 1972, but had been driving for about 2 years prior (don't ask!). I remember first seeing the original Capri and thinking "wow!" I always wanted one. I ended up buying a 1969 (H Reg.) 1600GT XLR in 1974. It was a fantastic car, a real head-turner, and, obviously, I wish I had never sold it. I paid £575 for it and sold it for £300. Those were the days. All of these new SUV's, irrespective of manufacturer, don't even deserve a name. If you take the badges off them, who knows what they are? They all look the same.

A better name... The Ford Lardy, The Ford Fugly, The Ford Dogpoo,, all more suitable names.
I am in the under 38 age bracket. This hurts for me too. I recon a Ford coupe would sell today. There is not many options around at the moment. Only really the Toyota GT-86/Subaru BRZ.
Absolutely - especially with Ford's reputation for great drivers' cars. They're up there with BMW for that.

Absolutely agree with the you Oscar. How dare they downgrade my 86 Capri with this ‘look like every other SUV’. what an insult. The Mustang too, the modern E is not Mustang, Steve will be turning in his grave. Lazy cannot be bothered naming.

That "Capri" is awful. No matter how hard I try I can't garner any enthusiasm for EV's. To me they are just like any other electrical good and I cannot get excited about them. No doubt I'll eventually end up with one of the bloody things but i'll buy it for the most boring of reasons and not because I like it.
@@jimmyp7928 I completely agree, I've no enthusiasm for EVs either, especially SUV ones. I do think they have their place and accept we can't use petrol and diesel forever, though I think we are making a big mistake putting all our eggs in the EV basket and not looking at alternatives as well
I wish I still had my 1977 JPS special Capri, beautiful in black with gold pin stripes! That was a great car, not a bland milk float like the new Capri 😢
I was mortified when BMW bought Mini, ripped the name from arguably the most iconic car ever made and stuck it on a mediocre, ugly modern, far bigger hatchback. I now feel equally mortified about the Capri. It's like getting a bunch of characterless pretty boys, Calling them The Beatles and using auto-tune and computers to make their music. It's nothing but plagiarism. Yes I know plagiarism is when you steal someone else's work but this is what the young people at Ford have effectively done. They've stolen the creation of people who came before them.
The Capri was a classic car with mostly engines that didn’t fit the looks, only the 3.0 and more so the 2.8 had the go that matched the show. The mark 1 was cool, the mark 3 even better.
This new version is simply an insult 😢

Same idiocy applies to the mini for me.. The whole point of the mini was that is was small ... it's what the name of the car literally meant...
Yet the last countryman on the U25 platform is 6cm longer than a Range Rover Evoque! Yep a mini is now longer than a range rover!
Its also only 3cm lower, it is basically a full sized SUV now... insane. How a car called a mini has become so f***ing massive is simply beyond me.
I'm not overly struck on the new Capri to be honest, it has nothing in common with the original. I like Fords but I can't honestly say I particularly want anything in the current range even if I could afford a new one. I could understand them reusing the Escort, Cortina, Focus, Sierra or Mondeo names on this car as the trend is now for SUVs instead of family cars

they should name all models 'Lemon".. small lemon, big lemon, bigger lemon and huge lemon for the larger cars. everybody knows by buying a ford one buys a lemon..

To be fair regarding the BMW Mini it was a direct replacement for the original so wasn't really reusing an old name
Fair comment, however... I do feel they have rather overstretched it with some of the large SUV versions. Issigonis will be spinning in his grave!

I wasn't keen on the R50 when it came out though I have warmed to it more recently, I do think the current ones look awful and agree Issigonis would be spinning in his grave if he saw them

As the owner of two Ford Capris, a mark 1 1600GT and a 280, I am absolutely appalled by the plundering of this classic name by Ford. The original was stylish and sporting, the kindest thing I can say about the new car is that it has neither of these two qualities and is just as typically ugly as loads of other SUVs on the market.
But the "original" Capri wasn't even the original Capri! You're forgetting the Consul Capri of 1961-4. Ford have always recycled names.

All car manufacturers register a name or number ( Peugeot, BMW , ) for example and it can’t be replicated by any other manufacturer. Probably to rekindle a name is easier than registering a new one either way the Puma , Mustang, and now the Capri have all been reincarnated but bare no resemblance to their predecessor’s . Good news though for the Escort that is to be be remanufactured in mk1 format by an endorsed Ford agreement but it’s not cheap.
Having produced a desperately dull car, Ford are trying to spice it up by using the iconic name of an iconic car from the past. Do they think we’re all stupid or what, Mustang Mach Es aren’t exactly selling well, so how on earth do they think this will be successful.
They should bring back one of theire best models. The MK1 Ka. Restomod style.

I used to be a blue oval fan boy in the seventies until nineties, I have owned a Capri 2.8 injection, Escort RS2000 custom pack, mk2 Ford cortina Savage. Ford lost its way, and don’t make anything that gets the blood racing.

@MrNellie65 I know, but the Savage based on the 1600E was also known as the 3000E, because Savages were not just based on Es, but other models too such as GTs.

Ford admit that they have a problem with the rising price of cars, that customers associate the Ford badge with affordability and they accept that there is a price point that customers will not pay for a Ford - at this point, customers turn to the likes of VW, Audi, BMW etc.
So like other companies, Ford are looking for a way to sell cars without using Ford branding, they create a ‘unique’ brand, in this case ‘Capri’ that has no Ford branding, with the deluded idea that people will be prepared to pay more because it is not a ‘Ford’.
They are trying to create a Lexus, an AMG, a Cupra to kid customers that they are not buying a Ford.
This is a double failure in my opinion, the brand is a stupid idea, but the rendition of the Capri is awful is and is only likely to infuriate those that value the name.
How about the Ford Dollop, more suited to the shape.

in my opinion this EV could have been called 'ESCORT', 'CORTINA', 'or 'CONSUL'' ..certainly not 'CAPRI'.

The Capri in Australia was revived in the Australian Ford Capri it was on a Mazda platform and it was a four seater convertible which had and issue with the convertible roof along the top of the windscreen the roof it wouldn't seal properly but as an SUV EV which is even worse and in Australia we obviously got the original Capri popular because there slogan went The Ford Capri the car you can buy without the price tag of a fancy European sports car or something similar to that as for the Escort Cortina and Fiesta the less said about the Fiesta the better actually it was the absolute worst new car we ever bought and that's the truth biggest pile of junk and that turned us of European and British cars forever we even owned a Ford Festiva it was made by Hyundai but with a Mazda engine reliability and we kept until it was stolen we got it back although not damaged and my wife had an impolite fitted but that didn't stopped it from been taken that was a good car ever got the Sierra only the one from Suzuki and never the Grenada the Ford Falcon was the go to large car as with this new EV SUV the "R" is in the wrong spot and of course been an EV much worse than the Australian built Ford Capri

Not sure what your wingeing about. This is an advert, it's what ads do. For me, the car does contain several design cues from the Ford Capri of the 70's and 80's. So calling it the Capri is fair enough.
We are all entitled to different opinions, and I respect yours. I just don't get using an old coupe name on a EV family wagon.

As a massive old ford guy thee new capri hurts my feelings alot its tainting my love of the car it pretends to be the capri for me at the age of 33 was memories in the back of my dad's capri looking out that C SHAPED quater glass as a little boy it's all the good memories i had as a child before it went to sheet! It's the car 8ve listed after all these years the only car that can honestly make me cry to see one out in public c9nsidering there rarity now.
