Fr. Ripperger on the Abuse Crisis and the Theology of the Priesthood

  • Ryan Grant is rejoined by Fr. Chad Ripperger, PhD, to talk about the abuse crisis in the Church in light of the revelations concerning former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the mass cover-ups carried out by bishops in Pennsylvania as revealed by the PA Grand Jury report, and the allegations against the Pope made by Archbishop Viganó. Instead of rehashing what has made the rounds on news, blogs and op-ed pieces, Fr. Ripperger discusses past Church legislation governing seminarians and clergy, and how the Vatican directed seminaries to deal with the problem of corrupt seminarians before Vatican II. He addresses the problem of homosexuality and the wider problem of a failure to keep chastity among seminarians, priests and bishops. Lastly, Father deals with the argument that everything is to blame on “clericalism” and shows that this is a veiled attack on the Catholic priesthood, and what the theology of the priesthood actually is. Not to be missed.

Ripperger is one of the most intelligent, intellectual contemporary Catholics who thoroughly enjoys bringing what he knows to be true down to the lay level for understanding...he is powerhouse of Catholic doctrine and he speaks with the sword of authority that cuts through any bs. The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God! GOD BLESS YOU Fr. Chad Ripperger, you are one of those kinds of heroes that i so admire!

@321Love-Walking The-Talk Yea...the ROSARY!!! Not instructed in the Bible, but each meditative bead on Christs Life and IN BIBLE!! Where in the Bible does it say that ALL facets of Christianity must be/only be stated in the Bible? I'll wait. Mother Mary gave Rosary to St. Dominic Guzman - where do you get your interpretation of Christianity and Bible? You know, Jesus Christ, Living Word, takes precedence over the Bible! And what isn't in the Bible has been handed down to us from Christs Apostles! You think you know better than Bible? Jesus gave us His Mother - you think you know better than the Mother of God? Don't bother replying - I won't answer or debate you. Youre wrong and I won't waste my time. Good day.

But, in their burning lust for revolutionizing all things, the feculent scum behind the Judas Council and its implementation decided that the traditional “Ghost” translation should be toppled and “Spirit” put in its place. Thus, simply as an expression of rejection of these filthy scumbags-including that horrid Judas Council apotheosis Pope Francis the Groovy-those with a true sensus Catholicus insist on continuing to say “Ghost.” Those infected with the diabolical disorientation of the Judas Council immediately reveal themselves not only by, for example, attending the Bogus Disordo, but also by little things like substituting “Spirit” for the traditional “Ghost.” Sadly, this channel isn’t totally free of the sulfuric stench of the Judas Council.

Hi Marie, in those situations I try to bring up the concept of personal responsibility. This means that each one of has been created free and each one of us will be responsible for his own sins. No matter what the ministers do, the grace of the sacraments is guaranted by Christ.
I also say that we're not required to follow a priest (even though we must always love, resect and pray for them) but we must follow only our Lord along with His doctrine. We cannot turn our back to Jesus because Judas was one of the Apostles.
Hope this can be of help, God bless you

A decade of the Rosary for Father! It's so good to hear this. I've been considering the previous teachings from Fr. Ripperger and applying them as news was revealed....and as a result, I've been accused of both "clericalism" and being too hard on priests, so I knew I was on the right track. As far as practical emotional and discussion response goes, I was relieved to hear in this interview that I have been on the same page as Father. But that's only because my responses in this have been based on the lectures posted on Sensus Fidelium. That's preparation: being made ready to face whatever may arise as it arises. Thank You, Holy Spirit!
This channel played a major role in my return to the Faith - in fact, I was listening to Fr. Ripperger when the scales dropped from my eyes, and I returned to Confession. But there were incidents over about 10 years that contributed. One of the first was when I was totally outside the Faith but appreciated the cool, radical priests and nuns I had known. It came up in conversation one time, where I was kind of bragging about the social activists in the local convent and rectories. Then the man I was speaking with said, "Bella Dodd was my aunt." I had never heard of her, so he filled me in. It stuck with me. I realized suddenly that those cool radicals might not have been so cool after all. Her nephew told me she spent the rest of her life in prayer and penance. (My memory might be in error, but I was left with the impression that she had entered a convent, and remained after her conversion and repentance, but maybe my imagination independently filled in those details, or maybe she was a consecrated Third Order, which was something I'd never heard of at the time. Either way, I haven't seen that mentioned in her bios lately). I should have a Mass said for the repose of her soul. I'm sure she did penance for me and all the other souls like me who were led so far astray as children, teens and young adults, and no doubt her prayers contributed to my return to the Faith.
By the way, another discussion shortly after the one with Bella Dodd's nephew also played a role in making me question what I had been brought up with: I spoke to a man whose sister had been a nun in my parish. She left to become a Wiccan priestess.
It still took 10 years to process it all and learn the Faith properly, but I see the Holy Spirit working through all of it, even up till now.

Thank you for your testimony KA Fleury - I'm a gay man who has begun to live a chaste life and am continuing to take the steps necessary to live a life in God's Grace and Mercy. I wanted to be a Priest when I was young but knew I couldn't live a chaste life at that time.....so I didn't pursue it further. This whole situation of abuse is awful but what seems equally horrible is the hatred and vitriol that come from the laity. I'm just keeping my eyes on Jesus and trusting in Him.

@@slatt33 I am just really responding to in particular homosexual clergy who think there are not any priests who aren't homosexual. Pedophilia is a criminal offense. Whether it is an adult male on a child male or child female it is a crime punishable by time in jail. But you are right; chastity (celibacy means they are not to marry) is the problem and if they cannot be celibate and chaste they need to be removed from the priesthood. Or here is a possibility. If they want to remain they should be required to be castrated so there would be no question that they will not have sex. And of course celibacy means they cannot be married.

@@slatt33 are you sure about what you are saying? Indeed Jesus forgive through his Holy Words 'go and sin no more". However with regard to persistent and awkward behavior and other matters, such as the invention of fake human mutation, please see, among other scriptures in the Bible, Corinthians, 6:9-18 and Jude 1:7. raping a child is a huge sin it is damaging a human life forever that was not created by human hands but by the hands of God the Almighty and there is a price to pay. We cannot feel that comfortable about forgiveness. And that's exactly why the homophobic criminal minded Priests did mumbling in their minds "oh yes I am forgiven" only to go back and do the same things over and over again. It's fallacious to assume or predict God's reaction towards towards a wickedly well calculated mortal sin. After all the decision is entirely up to Him.

@@2009glories If only it were that easy. Unfortunately, there are many more ways that pedophiles abuse children that don’t require being ... uh ... intact. I know because my son was abused by a priest for about a year. What he did to my son was not just twisted and sadistic, it was Satanic and clearly intended to destroy my son. More than that, the priest told my son that Satan owns his soul, I knew about the what was happening, that I approved of it...and even arranged it!
My son spent much of his life hating me as a result. It would take a book to describe the depth of the damage to him emotionally and spiritually, or what it did to our family.
He was robbed of his future. We were robbed of our son. We all lost our faith for a long time. The damage spread out and affected many others even to this day, more than 20 years later.
There’s nothing they could do to such a priest that’s enough. Someday, however, he will have to explain his actions to God. There is no punishment anyone could impose worse than what God will do.

I too lost my child to manipulative, prideful protestants, and certainly this is not Christ-like and therefore is satanic. I could not hate but chose to love even my enemies. I had to remember I did not own my child but God does. I continually pray for her and do not choose to revisit the hurt and hate that was perpetrated against me. I was guided by God to pray for the souls in purgatory and feel it is now my destiny to pray for those who hurt me and pray for other lost souls. God has shown me those souls at different times.

Yes, the Latin Mass is beautiful & sacred, but don't forget satan, his demons & human cohorts enters the Church even during all the Traditional Latin Mass era....1884 is the start and by 1950 satan already had human cohorts inside Vatican.Way before Vatican II existed....if the Church prior to Vatican II prevented the entry of satan then I will believe on the Traditionalist arguments, but the reality it was not.
So celebrating Traditional Latin Mass is not a guarantee that satan cannot enter the church

Jong, you make an important point. Nothing can create itself because it would mean that it existed before it created itself which is absurd. So we cannot say Vatican II created itself. Churchmen before Vatican II created Vatican II. Those churchmen used the Latin Mass but they still created Vatican II and then, at lease some of them, interpreted it and applied it. So the Latin Mass is not a magic wand that makes us holy and the proof is in the fact that the Eastern rite Catholics who do not use the Latin Mass did not experience the same apostasy as in the Latin (Western) Church. One sees that in the piety of those belonging to the Maronite, Coptic, Chaldean Catholics etc...… I will have to admit that even the Orthodox that are not united to the Church have more religion and piety than the West.

Hi Martin, I think that those prophecies regarding the two popes are not in the era of peace because it would contradict the meaning of the "era of peace". I have to go back and read them again to see if she mentions that they are followed by the era of peace or if they are right before the Antichrist (at the end of the era of peace).

Father Ripperger is SO right about so many things! Being a priest is NOT "a job." It is a 100 percent committment. You couldn't be married to a woman AND be a priest at the same time - for all the reasons he enumerated. But I think, more importantly, for myself personally, is that I learn something new every time I hear one of his talks! He is SO intelligent and well spoken, it is a RELIEF to hear him speak, in comparison to others.

I can at present only receive the Eucharist spiritually but knowing what is happening and the priest is offering mass in this sinful state is disheartening. Is the Eucharist pure when delivered by a sinful priest ?

This is excellent. As a protestant I would love to hear why there is so much focus on Mary. I was once told by a Catholic monk that it was because mom is easier to approach than dad, but that didn't really do it for me. Surely Jesus must be central otherwise it becomes a cult of Mary.

      I agree , Clive .

    • @wilts43
      @wilts43 4 роки тому +1

This is a HUGE question Clive. But begin by understanding "TYPES" in scripture. St Augustine said "The New (Testament) is in the Old Concealed, the Old (Testament) is in the New Revealed". How is it concealed & revealed? Through "Typology"! (or "Prefigures"). Why? So that "having ears they would not hear" etc.
Many Protestant Christians already know "typology" vis-a-vis Jesus.....because St. Paul compares Jesus to Adam: Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.” (1 Cor.15:45) Jesus fulfils & excels the "types" of Adam, Noah, Jonah, David the King, Isaac the Lamb, & Moses the deliverer. Eg. when Jesus commands the sea or walks across the water (Moses Red Sea). So, as the true Moses (in John 6:23-71) Jesus promises the new Manna (Eucharist). When He feeds people (5000) in the desert, & when he wanders there for 40 days (Moses 40 years), when Moses prays with outstretched arms saving Israel during battle with the Amelekites, scripture is telling you who Jesus is through typology.
Messiah means "the annointed one"(Davidic King). So in Matt 16:18-19 when Jesus renames Simon as "Peter" (Rock) he clearly references Isaiah 22:20-23 where the Kings "Prime Minister" is appointed. Peter (& the Popes) are the Davidic-King's "Prime Minister". TYPOLOGY OF ADAM & UNDOING "THE FALL"
Adam had a "helpmate" Eve. But she listened to a fallen angel, disobeyed God, took the fruit and brought sin into the world. (NB it is called Adam's Sin though Eve brought it in). But in Gen 3:15 God promises Salvation & He sets emnity between "the woman" & the Serpent/Devil & says that (through her seed) she will crush his head. (Jerome's text said "she shall crush")
So the Early Church Fathers saw that Jesus, the New Adam, has a "New Eve" in Mary. She listened to a good Angel (Luke 1;26-38). She obeyed God. She brought forth her fruit. She let her fruit (Jesus) hang on the tree of life as "a sword pierced her soul" (Luke 2:35). And where is she standing? On "The Skull"! (Golgotha).
So, as He dies, Jesus calls His Mother "Woman" & tells "the beloved Disciple" (that's you, as well as John) she IS his mother (John 19:26). "Woman" was Eve's name before she sinned; and she was "Mother of all the living"! Mary is Jesus "helpmate".
Only because Mary co-operated, did the Salvation of Jesus come into our World. "No Mary, no Jesus; Know Mary, know Jesus."
Mary has several "types" listed in Revelations 11:19-12:17 (No Chapter divisions in original)...... The Ark; The Davidic Queen; (The king's MOTHER was Queen, 12-starred crown is Juda ), Mother of The Messiah; Opponent-of-the-Serpent/Dragon/Satan; Mother of all "those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus." (Rev 12:14) .
We do not worship Mary; She is The LIVING Arkof-the-New-Covenant (see links below) we treat her with the Reverance the Jews treated the first, inanimate Ark. And, as our Mother, we ask her to pray for us. Do you ask people to pray for you? If you understand "Gebirah", you will know there is a particular reason to ask Mary's intercession. Gabriel says Jesus will "have the throne of His father David". From Solomon, the Davidic kings had a throne at their right-hand-side for their mother as Queen! She was titled "Gebirah" (Great Lady) and she had a function, (to intercede with the King for ordinary people) instituted in 1Kings 2:20. Thereafter every succeeding King is introduced with his Mother. Thus, at Cana, (John 2:5) Mary triggers her son's mission by interceding for the people without wine. (And note He calls her "Woman" again!) As mother of The-Davidic-King-Messiah she is Queen (but humbly so). And the humble King has let her intercession choose the hour....even against his own thoughts (Read the Cana passage).
Mary gestated God! She carried the salvation of the whole world within her, giving it life & human form, from her own flesh.
This reverses the creation of "The Woman" ..... (Gen 2:23) "And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." Now "The Son of Man" emerges from the Second Eve.
She gestated our salvation. As she ate her bread & drank her wine she transformed them into the body & blood of Jesus the New Adam. Her blood ran through God's veins. She gave God blood from her blood to shed for all mankind. She gave God flesh to be torn & scourged for us. She gave God a heart to be broken for mankind.

      Hey there Clive.
Mary is incredibly important because without her, we couldn’t have had Jesus.
Saint Paul says the church is the mystical body of Christ, and that each of the parts of the mystical body help each other. Death doesn’t sever these bonds (and almost no Christians before the reformation suggested that it did) and so the church in heaven (with Mary holding a preeminent role as the mother of God) continues to help us poor souls here below.

Don't let the noise and ugly happenings in the world deter you from following Christ. In the end, his church will triumph. We need not lose our faith in God. Everyone will pay for their sins or good deeds at judgement day so don't let the sins of others deter you from the right path, but instead work on your own soul, yet bc Jesus said to love everyone, we must pray for everyone else even those we see are living very obvious sinful lives. After all, we're no saints either. May God have mercy on all our souls. God Bless!

What is the function of a shepherd, if he is not allowed to point out to the wolf?
    Yesterday I read the open letter to confused Catholics by his eminence Lefebvre;
..."you who have known... To whom the Catholic community does not offer what they have a right to expect from it!".....
Isn't this exectly what the modern, fairly educated layman wants?
The protection of the flock by partly telling the truth, within the context of us all trusting upon the logos that is written on our hearts?
Humbly and respectfully yours in Christ,

To judge is to see clearly .... which obviously you do not understand by carelessly using Scripture to silence yourself and others on matters demanding the disinfectant of sunlight. If you believe Jesus comes to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, who are we to do less? There is the "sin of human respect" specified in James 2:9-10. In many times and ways we are called to "be our brother's keeper"' ; which is not possible without discernment of "right and wrong" behavior. Much suffering has been caused by Clerical abuse and concealment. How about Matt. 7:20?

If we do not judge THIS mess to be wrong, then there is no real justice. We were given commandments so that we could judge what is right according to God's law. We have the right to judge that these men must be put out of the church. We need to get them out for the sake of our children. Do you not care about the victims? Judgment must be done for the sake of our souls and theirs. What you are really saying is that you do now want to make a judgment because you, yourself have done things that you do not want others to judge. You are running away. If you do not judge what is right and wrong according to the word of God and the laws of the church, you will be judged by God himself because he knows you know what the law is and you refused to do what was right. Don't make the mistake of having false humility. We have clergy who are doing that right now and they are in more trouble with God than you are because they wear the collar.

He would find that time and needs to find it otherwise you don't get married or you don't enter priesthood . The problem could be solved with priests who marry assisted by un married priests and you will not be in shortage of priests but the opposite , a married priesthood would have huge numbers of men entering priesthood and even if marriage is permitted only a few would actually marry

What New mass priests should do is lead the Rosary before the mass .
Maybe our Lady of the Rosary will get priests and faithful to believe in the Sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and restore respect to Jesus in the Blessed sacrament of the Eucharist.
It works but the non- marian sects may not like it.
    Allan.

Father is right. The plot structure of the novus ordo it's greatly responsible 4 problems in the priesthood. Priest, unless he has been taught well with a traditional teaching it's not going to understand why he is a priest

    @33:54 .. Bingo! .. "He COMMANDS .. " Isn't this the essence of Christ's whole reason for
becoming Man? .. as KING yet as the GOOD SHEPHERD too? .. He commands! .. nor are
the ten Commandments "suggestions", nor (what's worse!) do they have "Please! .." at
    the end of 'em.

Also are men who are heterosexual but have weaknesses towards woman allowed to become priest?? I was at a mission in Ireland and the PP said we should enjoy this mission and one of the reasons he gave was they were "easy on the eye" referring to the woman!!!

+Bolduette --- And what does God say? If you can't control those desires you should marry. What kind of example are clergy who have sex outside of marriage and father children? They are destroying their lives, the womens lives and the childrens lives. Douay-Rheims Bible
But if they do not contain themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to be burnt.

Good points were made until he got to the "pedophilia" statistics which he said were 2.75 in the general population and 1.25 in the priesthood. He used that to say that optional celibacy will not solve the abuse problem. What he fails to recognize are two things: 1) The Catholic Church does NOT have a pedophilia problem which involves prepubescent children. Over 80% of the abuse involves post pubescent (e.g., 12-18 yr old) BOYS (unlike in the general population where over 80 % of sexual abuse involving teenagers is with GIRLS). Hence, the problem is homosexual pederasty and NOT pedophilia - a misnomer often used by the media to coverup the fact that at leasr half the Catholic bishops and priests in the US are gay; 2) The incidence of abuse is much higher than the 4.3% reported in 2004 in the John Jay Study because most of the bishops UNDER REPORTED abuse within their (arch)dioceses. CDR Edwin O'Brien, for example, reported "two cases" while bishopaccouintability.org found 100.

ANOTHER SOURCE, 2014: www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-28526106 THIS ARTICLE DEMONSTRATES HOW CLEVER USE OF SEMANTICS IS A TOOL IN THE RHETORICAL DECEPTION ARSENAL OF SPINNING STATISTICS AND STUDIES..
EXCERPT begins toward end of the BBC article:
      (BEGIN)
One problem is that the term "paedophile" means different things to different people.
"It's very common for regular men to be attracted to 18-year-olds or 20-year-olds. It's not unusual for a typical 16-year-old to be attractive to many men and the younger we go the fewer and fewer men are attracted to that age group," says Cantor.
He thinks that if we say that a paedophile is someone attracted to children aged 14 or less, then he estimates that you could reach the 2% figure.
"If we use a very strict definition and say paedophilia refers only to the attraction to pre-pubescent children [then it] is probably much lower than 1%," he says.
The term is often applied to a person who sexually abuses someone below the age of 16, but given that in some countries - and even some US states - you can marry below the age of 16 this definition would clearly not be universally accepted.
There is consensus on the clinical definition. Michael Seto and his colleagues agree that a paedophile is someone who has a sexual interest in pre-pubescent children, so typically those under the ages of 11 or 12.
But whether the prevalence using this definition is 0.5%, as James Cantor says or 1%, as Michael Seto says, you can be assured than in any large group of people - whether they be politicians, entertainers, or Catholic clergy - you are likely to find some paedophiles.
Paedophilia is not restricted to men - some women also sexually abuse children, although research suggests this is much less common.
But back to the Pope. How would he define "paedophile"?
We don't know, but there is a clue.
There is one well-known study of child abuse among Catholic clergy, carried out by John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. Its researchers went to each diocese in the US and found all the plausible accounts of abuse involving clergy who served between 1950 and 2002 - and they found that 4.2% of had been plausibly accused of abuse. That included allegations of abuse of adolescents AS WELL AS PRE-pubescent children.
But if you consider just PRE-pubescent children, the figure drops to between 1-2% according to Prof Philip Jenkins from the Institute of Studies of Religion at Baylor University in Texas.
This corresponds, more or less, with the figure attributed to the Pope
      >>>>>. "If he was using a different word like 'abusive clergy' then I think he would be going for a higher figure," says Jenkins.

So, if half the Priests and Bishops are gay, why aren't we seeing gay sex scandals in at least half of all parishes? It seems to me from this statistic that a huge number of gay priests are devout men of God who are honoring their vow of celibacy. But you just want to cast them all out. Brilliant logic.

I read the story of Nicola Tesla, who voluntarily castrated himself so he could focus totally on his vocation and not be distracted by his sexual urges which must have been pretty distracting - enough to detract from his desire to progress in his learning and vocation.

One of the sacrifices a man that is to becone priest agrees to is giving up a regular fatherhood he would otherwise have and exchanging it for spiritual fatherhood. For this sacrifice to happen the candidate must be a healthy and heterosexual man. Also, in general it is gravely sinful to modify normally functioning body so no, one cannot get voluntarily castrated without committing a grave offence against God.

I might also add got the priest who attempted to seduce me was ordained in 1966. I wasn't the only one that complained. Thankfully he was removed from active Ministry. Apparently he took an adolescent across state lines. But I met him his Bishop was hiding him in a Benedictine Monastery. The Pryor didn't want him with the other monks, so he housed him in a trailer on Monastery grounds
