You. Just the facts, the possible problems and a probable fix. Very much appreciated. At 72 this is the first time I ever knew I needed to do this. I was on borrowed time as our water heater is at least 10 years old and cut off. The actual error is thermopile. But I’m gonna clean things now up and see if it helps.
I have a 5yr old AO Smith. I've seen other tutorials which say to remove the wrap around air filter to wash it in the sink. Once removed, you can use a plastic brush to brush under the water heater to clear the possibly clogged filter tray near the flame guard. Then, you reapply the air filter back. But I'm not so sure my air filter can be removed. Its hard to see with the drip pan along the edge.
Great info. I can see dust around mine but I’m having trouble getting to it. My unit is on the 2nd floor and sits in a basin. Any tips on how to get a brush or vacuum to it or a good product to buy that would help?
There are some angled vacuum attachments that may be useful. The basins do make it difficult to clean the filter. Worst case scenario make your own attachment with pvc pipe, then tape it to your vacuum hose.
Hard to know for sure, a dirty filter will stop proper venting. Meaning you will smell it. However a plugged vent pipe will act the same way. The entire venting system needs to be checked.
sorry he never answers you. I have it. you need to pull out the filter slowly, clean it with a vacuum, try to use a long soft brush under there, or a blower and then put back the filter by pushing slowly until it gets inside again. take your time.
I had no idea there was an air filter on my water heater. What other things was I supposed to learn about home maintenance that I didn't? Are you going to tell me the furnace has an air filter I'm supposed to clean too?! 🙃
But you didn't show us the filter, how to remove, put it back, clean it, etc. You did nothing. BTW it should have a plate at the bottom or water pan underneath in case a leak.
Thank you!!! Finally a video that has my exact set up. Thank you for doing these videos :)
Thank god for people like you Detroit diy! Thanks for all the info

Thank you for this video. I just got my water heater running again because of it. My vent was clogged and my switch was tripped.

Thank You!!! Your help was so appreciated. Darn tiny button. I would have never noticed it. ❤❤❤
This was super helpful, I did not know about resetting the thermal switch and that did the trick!
I followed my repair guy how he did it

@@detroitdiythank you. I did find a flexible attachment for under a refrigerator. I’ve ordered that from Amazon and I’ll see if that helps me.
do you need to remove the filter from the heater before vaccuming?
No, you can't remove it without lifting the heater.
Just found out about a air filter thingy so my assumption about the hot water thing was right. Why don't rentals come with user manuals 😭
My Rheen Gas water Heater has no legs an sits on the floor
If you don’t clean the filter and try to relight it was getting a burning smell from my heater or can the smell be something else
