Yeah. Brushed systems are certainly lighter. Brushless needs less tuning & maintenance hence I went that way. As a purist I would have to track down a Dynatech 01 or 02 to keep this period specific. It’s cool both ways though, no right no wrong.
yes, I bought one myself and cant wait to build it.....its a nice black edition of the Egress, but I think I will color mine with metallic black.....I like the shiny texture the metallic color gives out..... anhyways, nice and meticulous build there......goood job. looks so cool.
Thank you. Good to see some doing their kits their way. I’m sure it will look fantastic with metallic black. Please share a picture of the completed car, would luv to see the outcome. 😊
Turned out really nice. While I am more a Kyosho person, since I owned a Mid in my teens, and love its silent and efficient belt drive, I can certainly appreciate this design as well.
I’ve always wanted a Kyosho Turbo Optima & Mid. Now with the rerelease vintage series it’s possible. Check out my 1st Kyosho build the Javelin with a twist ua-cam.com/video/0O99QFcWo5s/v-deo.html The crossover between Tamiya & Kyosho are common. The other big Japanese brand is Yokomo, also making fantastic quality RC cars. Glad you enjoyed the video. Hope you get a chance to try the car. 🙂
That is one awesome kit. Great job. Looks amazing. I really like the black edition, gives it that stealthy lookI have just bought this kit, can't wait to start building it, also thinking about getting the Top Force Evo & maybe giving it a similar look. Great work 👍👍👍
I have two of each. They are fantastic cars to build & run. Hats off to Tamiya. I don’t think we will see the Top Force Evo for awhile after this. Enjoy the Egress BE! 😊
The prop shaft you said was oxidised was meant to be like that so the 1-way bearing can grip when it's locking, that's not a mistake in manufacturing, it's meant to have a rough surface, by polishing you will likely now get slip under power.
Fantastic video, I've enjoyed every single second of it. I'm hoping you create more great content like this as I'll be looking forward to every one of your uploads. 👍😃👌 Big fan!!!
Awesome build vid.. I've also ordered one looking forward to building it :) great looking Egress love it.. Im going to run the TBLM-02S to, be awesome to see a running footage video of your car :)
Most would probably say ‘Get both!’ 😂. I also say this because they are both very good builds & both are also so different from one another. I think whichever you buy first you will want the other one later.
It really depending on where you are and how much the hobby shop wants to mark-up. Online from Hong Kong it’s currently about USD$378. Hope this helps.
My intention is to keep this as a shelf queen. But I have another Egress project similar to this which I will make a runner. Watch out for that in future videos. 😇
Beautiful the only thing I don't care for is the fact the kit go's for around $500, for that there is way to many plastic parts and the bearings aren't even sealed!! Ralphie
Unfortunately the reasons to not buy one goes on & on when you compare it to a modern day buggy. For many of us, it’s a small (happy) price to pay for that piece of nostalgia as it was something that we couldn’t afford back when the top of the line Egress came out. I’m certainly happier & now lucky enough in being able to afford & build it. Plus it looks fantastic on my display case. Hence I’m also thankful Tamiya rereleased this special version. 😊
Absolutely stunning video and build.💯👍👌 I am getting my egress black edition this Friday 9 December 2022 but am a little intimidated after seeing your video as I'm not such a great model builder like you and it just looks intimidating to me.ive also been looking at Schumacher Pro cat and that looks like a difficult build as well.these two cars are so special I can't afford to mess up the building of them. I wouldn't forgive myself. Any way top video and so skilled you sir are a legend and I would like to meet and know you to learn from you. I don't know if that will ever happen as I live in Australia but you are an excellent model builder and I am in awe at your skills. Please also tell me the wet soap water technique for applying decals. I have heard it mentioned previously but this is the first time I have seen it performed. What's it about and how does it work?
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you are getting the Egress BE this Friday. I’m sure you will enjoy the build. The Schumacher Procat also looks like an interesting design. The soapy water trick is easy. I too learnt it from others. Apply soapy water to body. Position the decal into the correct location before pressing down, squeezing out the water. Then heat with hairdryer & further press down stickers. Once you start & see how easy it is, you won’t do it any other way. I have a perfectionist tendency & find building quite intimidating too until i remind myself that it’s a hobby to be enjoyed and it doesn’t have to be perfect. Good luck with the builds & most importantly enjoy yourself. 😊
Nice build, too bad we can't get it here in the States. At least for now. But I must say this... at 1:10:15, that has to be the sloppiest servo saver I've ever seen. Get a better one in there, for sure.
Thanks. You could import them from Hong Kong online shops. Yeah, I swapped out to a shorter servo screw from 10mm to 8mm. The old school servo savers are not as deep as the new servos. That fixed the issue. 😊
The main differences are the original Avante has a shorter chassis making it twitchy to drive, the metal suspension arms were also heavy adding unnecessary weight and the front suspension didn’t have enough travel with the shocks at a very flat angle. The subsequent Egress, Vanquish / VQS & Avante 2001 had longer wheelbases, less complicated plastic suspension arms and better front suspension geometry. If you want a shelf queen, the original Avante is nicer to build and look at no doubt. For runners the subsequent Avante series cars are better. Hope you are able to enjoy both! 🌼🌻🌈☀️
You are the 1st person that’s said that. Most don’t like the painted body kits because they want to customise their cars. I think Tamiya came out with the painted bodies because there was a shortage of paints during the Covid period. Now that the supply chain has been restored, we might see less of the painted bodies.
Actually it’s the other way around. I use to follow my Dad around to fix our cars. Maybe that’s where the building & fixing interest / curiosity comes from. It’s also applied to my day job where I design & see through the construction of buildings. 😊
My step father and I bought a Preying Mantis in the 80’s while in Taiwan, and we built it together. I see Tamiya released a retro version of the “US GrassHopper” which was the YS version of our car! It had a Mobster engine that his Autistic friend from work did a bunch of stuff to and had this RC hitting 60mph in 1985-91 which blew us away! We track raced it together and later in the 2000’s with my Hpi street cars i could see he really enjoyed it still. Should i buy a retro Grass Hopper or retro Hornet for him now he’s in his 70’s? They still the same as the original ones? Thanks,i really appreciate it!
Firstly it’s heartwarming to hear about you spending time with your stepfather. It’s a hoot to hear about someone copying the Grasshopper & calling it Praying Mantis. Lol… classic. The concept of the original Grass Hopper & Hornet hasn’t changed in later releases. I prefer the mechanicals of the Hornet with its bigger 540 motor, slightly more complicated rear axle & rear oil filled dampers. But I also prefer the old school plastic Grass Hopper body versus polycarbonate Hornet body. Why not buy both and build both together with your stepfather? After that go for a good old bash in the backyard. It will be lots of fun. My humble opinion only. 😊
Well… everyone would probably give a different answer. Collect new in box, build as shelf queen & use as runner would be the common answers. As you can see from the videos I like to build kits. There are vintage series organised in the UK. But for me not everything has to be raced or go the fastest. It’s a hobby to be enjoyed whichever way. 🙂
I haven’t a clue if there is any “official” race category that this fits into, but the purpose of this kit is to fulfil the consumer demand for rc nostalgia.
The drivetrain was designed 33 years ago and most still run brushed motors so I didn’t want to stress the drivetrain although it might be able to handle the extra power for awhile.
Two Things ... Why are Tamiya putting plastic Parts like Diff Teeth Wheels and simple bearing balls into that kit? If it’s a Competition Racing Kit ... those things breaking first during race or after a few battery packs uses. But lucky they put not those old ecu / esc .. drive direction unit in the kit (mechanical thing ... users from 80&90 ... knows what i mean 😂) smoking times and next visit by a rc dealer to buying a electronic non mechanical dives.
It has to be put into context that the rerelease is true to the original that was released in 1989 without high power lipos and brushless motors. Adding steel gear diffs would only have increased weight which would have further disadvantaged this over engineered marvel. The original Egress didn’t come with the typical Tamiya mechanical speed controller of that era either because it was expected that racers would customize with their own esc. I grew up in that era and always yearned for more power & speed of an esc limited by budget. Looking back now it was a necessary evil to lower the cost & make RC more accessible. Besides that, these days the first iconic RC cars complete with the mechanical esc are now highly sought after collectibles.
Great car - ruined by the gigantic price tag. More than a Kyosho Legend Series car by $200!! I cannot justify spending that much on one, even a Black series. Cheapest Ive seen is $714 here in Australia, then postage on top of that. My DB01RRR wasnt even that much. Anyway - still a great car to have, but will have to pass on this one this time.
Yeah… I feel for you. It doesn’t help when Aust & NZ currency drops and it cost more for postage there. Still keep a lookout as there might be second production runs and there are sales of these leftover kits later on at the end of shelf life. This is what’s happening to the Top Force Evo.
nah, its all worth it man.... plus the price will go up once they finish selling it..... I bought the black edition Avante like 10 years ago, and now look at the price on auctions and stuff....I still havent built it.....
It’s got nostalgic value for many that started with Tamiya or for most of us that could not afford our dream cars during the golden period of RC in 80s & 90s. Something fairly easy to do! 👍🏻
Some folks find their zen space zoning out to classical music. Me, I turn to long form RC build videos. Thank you for scratching that itch, Homey.
I know what you mean. Glad I could help. 😊

Beautiful build, deserving shelf queen. Also @1:10:01 is that servo horn loose or just the design showing it's age?

Great vid and excelent job on building and filming! if youre going to run it, you should swap the servo saver thats wobbling like a noodle :D

I always thought clear blue would be needed for the window tint.
Yes I thought the same too. Glad Tamiya did it with decals. I can imagine struggling with the evenness of the blue spray.

When you took the sticker off why would it say void under there?
My guess is Tamiya runs these motors in its Tamiya only races and it’s to stop racers tampering with the motor cans.
Lovely ❤❤❤

The song at 1 minute 10 seconds is Goldentouch by Dasloe. 😊
Superb video!! I have original one from 89, but this one is growing on me ;-) How is the 15.5 motor, would you recommend it?
Thank you 🙂. The 15.5T might be a bit underpowered for some. Hotter motors would be better but will stress the drivetrain more.
Love this so much more than the ugly cab-forward designs today. I want one.

Yes it runs like any other Egress. I’m keeping this as a shelf queen & building another Egress specifically as a runner.
All these plastic gears.... how many packs till they break?
It’s alright unless it’s a low turn motor where the gears might strip. The gears themselves are pretty tough.
