What Happened After I Fed a Mouse to My Ant Colony (It Was Bad...)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 кві 2023
- After feeding a dead feeder mouse to my marauder ants, named the Leviathans, the ant colony literally exploded in numbers. But this sudden surge in population wasn't without consequence. The ants altered their nest environment in a way that negatively impacted the queen ant, the brood, and the entire colony. In response to this emergency, I resolved to rehome the ants to a new setup. Hope you enjoy this week's video! Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

I’m now addicted to watching videos of ants. They are definitely my favorite animals. Truly fascinating creatures
I worry that the gimmicky kind of set ups aren't destined for long term success. The design looks cool but this could be a really big colony. I miss the old fire nation and golden army natural set ups.
Particularly the water to encourage the natural rafting behaviours of the fire ants.
It's interesting to see builds that cater specifically to the habits of each species and what makes them special.
Can you please do an update on the termites, it's been 2 months since we last got an update on them (P.S. Remember what you said on your first termite video "the AC family never forgets")
Yea AC should update on the termites, I hope they are not gone.
You need your own serious of special on discovery channel. You’re incredibly entertaining and informative, as well as creative. I went from disliking ants to finding a video of yours while researching isopod keeping years ago and have been here ever since. I don’t comment much but man you’ve given me a love for ants, even the rage filled fire ant types.
Thank you! Ant love forever!
great channel, mate. Here in NYC I used to feed the ants that lived in the cracks outside the Metropolitan Museum. They were filled with concrete one day and I felt sad I could no longer feed them. That was 20 years ago.
The way the queen was basically stuck is sooo creepy somehow.. I hope this all works out!

I've always loved big headed ants they are my favorite ants sadly I live where there are little species.
These are not big-headed ants (Pheidole spp) but they are cool. These are Marauder Ants, whose majors are many times bigger than those of Pheidole. A marauder ant supermajor can measure over 2cm long. The queen almost 3cm.
@@AntsCanada I have an ant colony near my house that seemed like normal small red ants, but i found out from a painful sting, that they weren't regular ants, as well as the fact they had very large super majors that made their darker gaster more visible.
@@DeviantAngel I also have a colony near my house, but they are not red ants. I’ve only ever seen minors, so not sure if they have majors or what the queen looks like. But they seem to gravitate towards grasses, especially tall grasses that are of a different species than my lawn grass. How do I know this? Because, whenever I’ve weeded out grass from my garden(for good reason, I don’t want the grass to take over and strangle the roots of all my plants), a swarm of small black ants rush over to my hand and start stinging me. The pain is very brief and there’s no mark left behind that I was stung, but boy do the stings hurt, they feel like sharp needles in my hand. Ohio, USA
Next time can you share about the sounds ants make, like their distress calls and such, as well as see if different in different species! Apart from pheromones ants talk to each other!

Great Video AC! Really enjoyed it. You really take us on an emotion rollercoaster. Also can’t wait to see that cool terrarium 😎.
I suggest a "Pandora" styled terrarium from the film avatar consisting of artificial bioluminescent plants and some of the colored ones as well. You can also do the floating rocks using the vines as hidden wires. I bet it would be a sight to see!
Do you keep spring tails and isopods with the ants? They could possibly help keep everything tidy for you. Eating roach carcasses and any mold that may start to grow.
I left this channel 3 years ago because i had finals, after they finished i forgot about the channel, today i came back and youstil sound like the good old humble Canadian, i love this channel so much, thank you ❤❤
Welcome back to the Antiverse! You're right on time for the fun! Ant love forever!
Ever thought of putting a full terrarium of medium UNDER the main top terrarium or making the dirt level of the terrarium high then the ground level? In order to give you colonies vast amounts of underground space? Maybe even giving them a clearer medium to dig through like silica or jelly? I'm sure each species is picky about what they dig through and how well it can retain moisture, but I'm just throwing stuff out there.
TL;DW:
He feed mouse to ants, ants put lots of eggs, removed too much dirt from colony, moisture levels bad, seeds rooting.
THANK YOU.
Your gonna have to move them out ASAP, I recommend you don’t feed a new colony that much food at once, especially if their nest is in a test tube
Love the design of the new terrarium, that dragon is so cool!
Bow.
@@AntsCanada also your intro had me concerned that the mouse had infected them with worms or something XD
"dj kaled suffering from success" is the energy i felt when watching this video

The reason they aren’t going after the roach is because they’ve already had their fill on mouse protein, and know that if they eat too much more they won’t be able to fit inside their current place of residence. It’s not weird or unhealthy, it’s basic ant biology.
Yes sirrrrrrrr
That is going to be an EPIC set up, and I'm so looking forward to seeing it!

To say that the Idee for the new terrarium is amazing would be a understatement.
i asked chat GPT "can you make a ants canada script" this is what it said im blown away! i guess i got my own mikey bustos haha
"Sure, here's a possible script for an Ants Canada video:
Title: The Incredible Ants of the Amazon Rainforest
Intro:
Hey, AC Family! Today we're taking a trip to the amazing Amazon rainforest, home to some of the most incredible creatures on Earth. And we're not just talking about the jaguars or the anacondas, we're talking about the tiny but mighty ants that make this ecosystem thrive.
Scene 1:
We start our journey deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle, where we come across a bustling colony of leafcutter ants. These ants are famous for their incredible ability to carry large pieces of leaves many times their own body weight back to their colony, where they use them to cultivate fungus to feed their young.
Scene 2:
As we follow the ants along their trail, we come across a group of army ants, marching in formation with military precision. These ants are fierce predators, hunting down and devouring any insect or small animal in their path. Their impressive teamwork and coordination make them a formidable force in the jungle.
Scene 3:
Next, we encounter a group of weaver ants, working together to create a complex network of nests woven from leaves and silk. These ants are master architects, using their own larvae to produce the silk they need to create their intricate homes.
Scene 4:
As we venture deeper into the jungle, we come across a colony of bullet ants, named for their incredibly painful sting, which has been described as feeling like being shot by a bullet. These ants are known for their incredible resilience and strength, and their venom is so potent that it has been used by indigenous tribes as a form of initiation and ritual.
Scene 5:
Finally, we come across a colony of leafcutter ants being raided by a group of parasitic ants known as the Amazon queen assassins. These cunning ants infiltrate leafcutter colonies and steal their brood, which they then use to start their own colony. It's a fascinating example of the complex relationships and interactions between different ant species in the Amazon rainforest.
Outro:
And that's it for our journey through the incredible ants of the Amazon rainforest. We hope you enjoyed learning about these amazing creatures and the vital role they play in this unique ecosystem. Don't forget to like and subscribe to Ants Canada for more amazing ant content!"
Gotta say, @0:50 - that's a pretty awesome sound effect

Great video as always. Thanks AC!
Oh gosh, you described how bad things were and my heart broke. For ants! I'll just be happy when the ants have a nice large space that is not cramped and lets them live comfortably again. Those poor little things... At least you caught the problem and know what ro do!
The ant population explosion is really impressive, which remember me of another animal that usually has an exponential growth...TERMITES
How are the different termite colonies growing?
I am really curious to see how these have been and I remebered that it would be cool if you later joined the different colonies so that a super colonie was created. I know some species do it, altough im am not sure if yours doesn't.
Anyway, great vid as always
PS: We wouldn't mind if you posted another vid in the midle of the week featuring the fire ants colonie or something like that, I mean, I aways expect the saturday morning vid but it would be a very nice suprise if I received a notification of another vid in the middle of the week. Happy Easter

I've known overcrowding is bad, but those were NOT the consequences I'd expect! And wow, those are some beautiful ants. I hope the new home plan will work in time.
And that's why you have to always crush the seeds before giving them to the colony
Now I know! These are my first partially granivorous ants.
please show a detailed build of the terrarium - That's what I loved years ago but there's less of that now. I draw inspiration when making my own for isopods and toads :)
More great pieces of artwork on the way. Always interesting, and surely fun to create.
It would be fun to see a simple setup for beginners too. There are probably millions of other channels for that though.
This is gonna be so good. Really hoping this new colony of ants makes it. Hanging on a thread now...
Holy cow. That’s a lot of ants! Now I know to never give my ants a mouse!
Are you going to change their enclosure later today?
It defiantly explains why the ants arent hungry; dehydration It causes a creature to seek more water than chloral intake due to fluids not present in the digestive tract. Also defiantly seems like that test-tube is becoming a massive bio-hazard as well as beginning to show strain on the colony, due to the queen using her workers and brood to keep away from the decaying area of the colony.
very excited for the new terrarium, you always create a masterpiece and this newest addition looks like a banger. I hope it has room for the colony to excavate massive chambers though, as it seems like that is what they want to do
I just cannot wait until the colony grows into the millions #AntLoveForever
