  • The Asante (also known as Ashanti) are part of the more prominent Akan people, a significant ethnic group in modern-day Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. "Asante" translates to "because of war" in the Twi language. It derives from two Twi words: "ɔsa," meaning "war," and "nti," meaning "because of." This name reflects the origins of the Asante kingdom, which was established to resist and combat the Denkyira kingdom.
The variant name "Ashanti" emerged from British reports, where the pronunciation of "Asante" was transcribed as "Ashanti," reflecting how the British heard and interpreted the word.

Ashanti is not a tribe but a Kingdom.
There're Akyem people in the Ashanti Kingdom called Asante-Akyem.
Many tribes came together to form Ashanti Kingdom.
So Ashanti is not a tribe.

@@zigibeat3689They are one ppl from the Adansi (builders) tribe. Akyem too isn't a tribe but a Kingdom made up of 3 union
Akyem Abuakwa, Kotoku and Bosome. The name Akyem is the plural form of Cheetas. Because there were lots of them in the dark, dense or green forest (Kwaebibirem). History has it that these cheetahs will hunt anyone who will dare enter that forest but they didn't hunt but protected that particular tribe instead. That's why the Okyehene sits next to a cheetah. This is very complicated, even Otumfou's children aren't Ashantis because he's married to an Akyem lady. Some ppl simply think they are from where they are born, where their mother or father comes from.

It's no surprise that the design of the stool is a striking resemblance to that of Tutankamun. The Akans and Ancient Egypt have a lot in common. the detail colors on Tutankmun's coffin is very similar to that of the Kente worn by the Ashantis.
In terms of names, Tutankamun of ancient Egypt, Tutu Ankomah of Ashanti, Akhenaten of ancient Egypt, Akenten of Ashanti, Pharaoh Josa, we Akans have Josa.
Amen Ra, the sun god of Egypt, Akans have names like Amera, and Amonwi... Amon is same as Amen, and the 'wi' is derived from wia or ewia, which is the sun.
Many other similar names between the Akan tribe and Ancient Kemet.

@@HistoriaAfricana No problem. Only one small nitpick. There is no evidence either genetically or linguistically that the Ashanti originated in Egypt. I think many African peoples s make those claims due o brainwashing from colonialism. They always want to associate themselves with Egypt or the Christian/Muslim world since they are more respected by the wider world. For example the Hausa claim they were founded by an Arab prince even though the Hausa kingdoms predate Muslim influence and they didn't even become extensively Muslim until around the 1500s.

    • @HistoriaAfricana
      @HistoriaAfricana  5 днів тому

Those can always be assumed based on linguistics, shared cultural practices and even written scripts. Cheikh Anta Diop drew similarities between words among various ethnic groups and md ntr. I covered hidden scripts. Example Nsibidi has common meanings with at least 8 glyphs. I have covered the similarities between Kemetic practices and greater black Africa. These are inferences based on historical logic. I do accept the fact that concrete evidence will be difficult to prove at this point. Oral histories become a mix of facts and half truths, so I can disregard some tales such as those of the tribe you mentioned. I cannot prove conclusively but I can infer that some southern tribes did indeed migrate from Kemet during the scattering of our people by invaders. On those grounds I respectfully disagree. Thanks for adding to the discussion. It is very much appreciated.

A clan is a group of people with a common ancestry.
There were no clans living in isolation rather we had complex states incorporating clans and sometimes other ethnicities making your spurious statements inaccurate.
Do you know the Asante had an allegiance with the Dutch.
What Asante did not have is a coastline and they needed access to trade with europeans.

The Ashanti Empire got their main income from slavery and gold for centuries and were a major contributor to both the Trans-Atlantic and Barbary slave trade.
