Thanks for the balanced analysis. Both gals played well. I was surprisingly impressed with Pegula’s level during this match. She gave Sabalenka quite a challenge and has greatly improved her game, but Sabalenka was the heavy favourite for a reason and ultimately conquered the court. 👏🎉
That second set, when Sabalenka lost that lead and was down 5-3, felt like the "final test" for Sabalenka, given the leads she has choked in past US Opens. Pass it, and the title is hers. Lose it, and history repeats itself. Similar thing in the Navarro match, Sabalenka was able to hold it together and not let it spiral out of control like she would have done in 2023.
Sabalenka's improvement mentally and emotionally coincided with her bringing in Gavin MacMillan to improve her technique on her serve and her forehand. Since then she's won three majors. It's tough to stay emotionally resilient and mentally focused when you can't count on your serve or your forehand due to major technical flaws. Her improved movement of course is also a big part of her success.
Good point. Flawed technique tends to break down in big moments when nerves come into play. Great players will still win matches, but they win more and execute better under pressure when they don't have to use their talent to overcome technical flaws.
So well said. In my comments, I was separating the serve transformation from the emotional state, when in reality one may have been very much the result of the other. I think you got it right.

Jessica played a really good match, just a few minor tweaks and she can easily win a slam or two

Hey Gill, just wanted to ask a question about the GOAT debate for mens tennis. I think anyone would have a hard time arguing that Novak isnt the GOAT at this stage, but who would you take as the 2nd greatest of all time, Federer or Nadal? Most people would instantly assume its Nadal because he has more slams, however I don't think its that simple. Whilst Nadal leads in slams, masters, H2H and his unhuman record on clay, Fed leads in every other catergory. More weeks at number 1, more titles, more hard, grass and indoor titles, gs finals, semi finals, and 6 atp finals to Nadal's 0. Who are you taking?
It's Federer. Nadal's achievements are skewed and seem better at a first glance because of his clay dominance. Anything regarding Nadal you have to look through the prism of clay results and how those skew his overall numbers.

Aryna is the best FEMALE hard court player in the world, and the most explosive FEMALE player in the world. You forgot that important detail.
C’mon Gill…. Navarro and Jessica won’t get over the hump with the tools they have. You give them too much credit. Hard to make that final mental push to get over the line at this level when you come from the privileged background that they come from. They don’t know what true adversity is… tennis has this problem across the board aswell. A lot of “rich” kids all over the tour.
Terrible take, the fact that they come from rich families has nothing to do with how they play tennis… both Pegula and Navarro have the mentality needed to succeed at slams and put in the necessary work in order to improve their game.

Your comment is grounded on resentment, it seems. And that takes credibility to your opinion. Coming from a wealthy family doesn't necessarily imply you don't have to deal with adversity. History is still to be made for those two players you are trying to trash. One is world number 3 and the other (now top 10) is arguably the most improved player of 2024.
This is a tired cliche. Plenty of rich kids have made it in sports. Jess long since passed the point of playing to secure her financial future; she's in it to win trophies. I'm not sure Emma has the total game, but Jess definitely does.
@@jonathanbustamante660 where did I trash them? I said he gave them wayyyy to much credit based on the tools they have to compete at this level. Today was Jessica’s last great opportunity to win a slam. Navarro will face similar stumbling blocks due to their similar playing styles. You people can’t take harsh critics that goes against the normal cliché-run of the mill takes! Jessica and Emma don’t have big weapons, so their edge has to come from digging deep mentally… can they? We will see!
