  • Welcome to my daily vlogs! TRAVEL. FOOD. COMEDY. SINGING. PETS. LIFE.
I upload a new video every day at 7AM EST!
    Vlog edited by Jeah Yason
    For business inquiries: mikeyjbustos@gmail.com
    About Me:
My bio is pretty random: In short, I am a professional singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada who moved to Manila, Philippines which sorta became my Hollywood because my first UA-cam channel MIKEYBUSTOSVIDEOS grew popular due to Filipino comedy videos. Meanwhile, I'm also a big biology geek who is obsessed with ants, so I built an internationally operating ant business supported by another popular channel called ANTSCANADA, and well basically, today I travel and tour around the world doing what I love so I wanted to start this vlogging channel, in hopes to encourage you guys to follow your dreams no matter how random, by showing you what happened when I followed mine! You just never know where life will take you when you listen to the yearnings of your heart!

OMG, Mabuhay Squad! They're finally in!!! I'm soooo happy this day has come! I've waited almost 4 years for this! 😭 BUT, now that you've seen how they've reacted to their aviary, what should our next step/course of action be? Opinions?

You need to build a safe and dry “feeding” place in my opinion. Like a “bird house” so they can enter there when feeding time

Maybe leave them in there for another day, they still seem a bit shocked by the new environment. Then maybe let them out after having breakfast the next day.
If they seem to be adapting well, you could also think about letting them out tomorrow afternoon.

Mikey, please don’t rush releasing them into the aviary! Slow and steady, calm and positive energy! If you have any anxiety about when to release them the birds will feel the energy! There is no rush. They will live there forever! When you feel calm and comfortable you will know they are ready! I think you are still absorbing the fact that this beautiful home is yours and RJ’s !!! Forever !!! That you really did build your dream ! All of it ! There is so much for them to take in. New smells, new sounds, new sensations. Take a deep breath and enjoy ☺️. It will come. Luv ya guys!!!! See ya on the next video. Frances

Being a fellow Canadian also makes being part of your lives Mikey & RJ is extra special. Enjoy your beautiful home and the wonders that are discovered and made every day.
Sending positive vibes and lots of love from a fellow Canadian in Ottawa, Ontario. 🇨🇦 ❤️❤️👍!!

My God! What a really beautiful green looking aviary, and it does indeed feel good to be seeing the birds finally in their real home! I'd agree with your idea about eventually letting them out and flying back to the cage at night to sleep, because at least as a good thing, the birds can get the natural Philippine sunshine, and at times get bathed by the rain!

Hi mikey i just noticed, your water fountain, how the water splashes on the surface it will easily Runs out of water.
And i saw how you struggle to use the pale to fill in again
I just want to suggest something that might help you and make things easy
Why dont you put water pump that is connected to tap water and connect it to a smart plug so every 5 or 6 hrs it will open and it will refill the water fountain for maybe a 20 or 30 seconds, so you will not having a hard time and you will have more time to enjoy your aviary.
Love the aviary and the house ❤️🙏

Re-use the three pumps from your current set-up. Buy a pre-made plastic pond. Build a custom holder for it, and use one section of the plastic pond for filter operations. Built a custom Aquarium filter sponge, Coarse to Fine mesh. Make a portion of the water surface be a sit-able feature and a lid to access pumps and such. Then simply make essentially, an aquarium system. It will be enough for the birds. If you filter the water, place maybe a few local freshwater shrimp inside. It will have bacteria enough to keep the water fresh. Then you just need to pull out the filter, squeeze it in a bucket and return it.
You can go a mile further by making a custom skimmer build with filter socks and what not.

So true! There are many how-to videos for building a self-cleaning pond, but it is basically what they're planning with their pool. I believe Mikey could still put the tea leaves from time to time as long as it's not too much and starts overwhelming the natural filtration system. I thought they were self-sustaining fountains with dedicated water supply. You do have that water spigot right there.

At the end you mentioned being worried they might fly to a place where you can't get to them. I too worried about this. They have always been caged and may go up and not be sure how to get down. Up flying is easier than flying down. If you target train them to fly to a station/stand then if they get stuck they will usually come down if you target them. It helps them focus on where to go even if they are scared.

  • @comedianmattrossey

    Hey Mikey & RJ
Mikey, I think you should put 2 of the branches on the opposite corner of the aviary, but at the top. That way the birds would be able to go right to the top and sun bathe, or get a cool breeze if they find it warm down lower in the aviary. Plus if you had 2 branches above in the opposite corner you would be able to be on the outdoor roof patio and be eye to eye with the birds. Up top there's not really any place for them to perch for direct sun if they want it.
An idea for their food dishes would be a piece of plexiglass on the inside above the food dishes and if you wanted portable food dishes, maybe a larger base dish with an umbrella of some kind as part of the dish. You could put them in the cages or anywhere in the aviary.
I love the trees and bushes you chose, a little bit of every kind of foliage to make the aviary seem more natural for the birds!
    Oh, quick question.
When the birds were eating their dry mix I thought of them dropping seeds and it made me think about the seeds sprouting in the drains, not a good thing to happen.!!!
Do you have catch screens for any solids, especially seeds, that may get washed down the drains?
That way you can avoid major drain work needing to be done in the future.
If you don't have them I really would suggest you bring that up with whoever would have any knowhow of such a thing, and get some catchment screens made so that they can be easily pulled out and cleaned of debris and returned to the drains.

Hi guys, thanks for sharing the bird's first day in the aviary. Yes, it is a trial and error thing. But so exciting. Regarding the fountains: I wondered if they were going to be kind of painy. We have a big triple layer fountain by our sun porch, so I have experience with them. I did some research on automated bird baths that will change the water so that it's always fresh. One brand is Birdbath Butler. You might want to look into something like that. I am glad to see the birds seem to be settling in. Enjoy, Gloria 🐂

So happy to see the aviary fully set up.
Good move on acclimatizing them first.
Do it for a few weeks first.
As for the cages, my experience with these cages (SY series), is that when brought outdoor you will experience rusting in a few months. The plastic wheels at the bottom sucks too, ull need to find caster wheels to replace them later on.
Glad to see the birds getting natural rain and sun.
Youre right about mixing different bird sizes, it can be done and the whole "dont mix them" is really more of a precaution for people who suddenly put birds together or put them in a small enclosure. But yes, since you have 2 flocks here, careful observation during their release is important especially since conures tend to be more assertive.

Oh Wow!! This is a HUGE milestone to reach; what an awesome accomplishment! I don't have any experience with this, but I would say that a slow, deliberate pace now would be the best approach. Meaning don't rush the next steps. As I see you, Mikey, you're like a kid on Christmas Day and, rightfully so... you've worked and dreamed of this moment for years. I think that a calm, deliberate approach to each step helps the birds acclimate (I know you already know all this)... it helps you, too; as you've seen, you'll likely want to adjust your behaviors to be more convenient to this new setup. It will all come together in time. For right now, though, it's beautiful. It feels like all of the potential in the Universe is at your fingertips.
It's exciting to think that your next big milestone of making the downstairs living area more finished is just days away; WOW, it's hard to believe it's really happening, LOL. I'm really very impressed and proud of you both.
Again, thanks for sharing all this; it's really quite the journey to watch (and even be part of). I take a lot of inspiration from this, and I'm super grateful! Ya'll stay safe, and I'll see 'ya next time!

It's amazing. I love it. Have you thought about installing an outdoor camera or two in the aviary? You would be able to check up on them from anywhere in the house or while on vacation. Also, you could even setup a 24/7 livestream channel for the birds if you wanted if you're able to find camera angles that don't peer into the house at all.

  • @Ezihkhel

Interesting how the Blue-naped Parrots were the ones that were really intrigued at first with their new surroundings once the cages got moved into the aviary whilen the Crimson-bellied Conures were the ones that were unsure, but then their behaviors got switched around later because it was the Crimson-bellied Conures who were comfortable enough to start eating despite their initial confusion. Since the birds look really tiny compared to the aviary and there are still 6 of them, once they finally come out of their cages and start perching on the trees, they'd probably blend in really well with the greenery with the only indicator that there are any birds in the aviary being their calls haha. I reckon you'd acquire more birds ij the future? Like the Nicobar Pigeons that I suggested perhaps and Pink-necked Green Pigeons.

Put the cages in the aviary... but with the doors open so they can decide when to go in or out. That is what others that let their parrots roam their homes do it. The cage is still a place for refuge, feeding,... and yes so you can contain them when necessary such as when cleaning the aviary or other work... or like you said for the vet. Also from other bird owners they say there is no benefit to letting birds stay in their cages to let them "acclimate" For instance they leave their cage doors open starting on day 1. BUT... since you cannot be sure about how the 2 species will interact at first... You may want to open the cage on one first... and then the other later in the day.

window so my babies🐦 don't fly straight on the window and the 2 cages? i think it's better for the cages not to get wet? it will get rusty eventually🤔 or the toys? just be careful not to get moldy? i don't know? just my guess?🤔 i do have 25🐦 from zebra finches, parrotlet, budgies peachface lovebird😂3 flight cages lol! 1 for all the finches, 1 for LB and the other 1 for budgies and parrotlet and im in Canada and i normally let them out to play in the living room to have some exercise except the finches😂but all the 3parrotlet, 4budgies and 9peachface LB are train to go back to their own cages and for them the cages are their safe place and if i said bedtime? they all go back to their cage😂 they get along pretty well no fighting and toe bitting are illegal here😂😂😂lol! LB love to bite toe😂anyway Good Job on your Aviary i really love it❤ but the plants and trees? i hope they will not murder it😂so will see🤔

I also love how the ginko leaves on the dining room lights reflect the leafiness of the aviary! - OK so about those fears Don't worry, Mikey! : 1) Birds flying into windows - I think they'll figure out the windows and be ok. Plus they can't work up the velocity indoors like a bird flying into an outside window can. 2) Weaver Ants: - eventually ants will make their way in and I feel like it will be very different from Malaya falling into a formicarium because this is not a tiny enclosed space - they're free-flighted birds and can move around and evade bites or stings in most cases. 3) Tearing up the vegetation - will they destroy some of it? Maybe but I bet toys/perches/branches and things to do will keep them from barbering all the trees. In big aviaries at the zoos, there are lush plants and the birds don't ruin them 4) Fighting : introducing them together in a big/new neutral territory should reduce cage aggression - plus there are places to fly/go if there's a ruckus. There's so many bird introduction videos online too... I bet everything will be ok! Just like with the dogs! 😁 You are being like mommy Bustos and worrying! But i get it.. I'm like that too worried mother hen about everything LOL - but then the Universe/God always surprises me with things being ok for the most part.

Thinking about the breakfast becoming soup in the rain -- I was wondering if you could make food bowls out of sieves? The morning meal is damp anyway, so if water could drain through, it would not be changed much.

I agree, the fountains are cool looking but having one in the center allows more room for a chair and lower maintenance. The three fountains outside in a good location will be awesome for viewing wild birds. Maybe a camera for spotting new species on occasion.

The incredible dining table light fixture reminds me of the old Star Trek episode The Companion! My worries other than the windows in the aviary are that the birds may become less tame, and that diseases may come down into the aviary from the open access above. Everything looks phenomenal!

Wow, between Ants Canada and here, Weaver Ants keep popping up. They are by far my favorites. I do think it's a good idea to let them continue outside and not in the aviary; no need to take any chances.

Thats nice hopefully they don't hit the glass coz they can see pants through the glass. When I was living abroad I feel sorry to some coz they hit the window glass. Hope that tape you put is enough. Maybe suggest you can put a shade around the tree. Well done beautiful place
