The Real ID Act, enacted on May 11, 2005, specified that after three years, from May 11, 2008, federal agencies would no longer accept identification documents that did not satisfy the standards. However, due to widespread opposition and refusal by many state governments to implement the provisions, the deadline was extended numerous times. On January 29, 2008, DHS issued the Real ID regulations, specifying a gradual implementation schedule. Until May 11, 2008, states and territories would have to become compliant with the Real ID Act or request an extension, which would be valid until December 31, 2009, and they could later request an additional extension to May 11, 2011. Documents issued by states and territories that were certified as compliant or that were granted an extension would continue to be accepted, even if the documents themselves did not satisfy the standards, until December 1, 2014, for people born after December 1, 1964, or until December 1, 2017, for others. After these last deadlines, identification documents themselves would have to satisfy the standards to be accepted by federal agencies. On March 7, 2011, DHS extended the deadline for states and territories to become compliant to January 15, 2013, but all identification documents continued to be accepted during 2013. On December 29, 2014, DHS extended the deadline for documents to satisfy the standards to October 1, 2020, regardless of age. Enforcement based on the issuing state or territory finally began in 2014 and 2015 for accessing federal facilities, and in 2018 for boarding airline flights:

It costs nothing extra to get Real ID.
When you renew your driver's license, or if you don't drive, your state ID, you simply bring proper documentation. Your real birth certificate and one or two of a number of other accepted documents to prove your address.
Not a tax and no extra fee. Just a little extra effort the first time.
I've had one for years
That program used to be opt-in, and you could still get a regular license from your state. Now they're pretty much making it mandatory. You shouldn't have to have a mandatory ID to make sure your travels aren't molested.
You've always had to have a ID to travel. A regular state-issued drivers license or state ID (or passport) was always mandatory for flight (or, really, any type of travel).
Real ID is just an updated version of a driver's license. It's not any kind of big conspiracy. It's just an ID that's more difficult to fake/forge. When I renewed my state-issued driver's license a little over a year ago, I just got the Real ID. It cost like $30 and it's exactly the same process as getting a "regular" driver's license.

I don't see what the problem is
Voting is a civil duty and right where travel is not and considered a privilege. Therefore voting with an ID requires that the state or federal government pay for it otherwise it is prohibiting someone from fulfilling their civil duty and while I'm sure there are a few votes that gets through the cracks denying an American citizen their right and civil obligation is against our constitution before the potential of an illegal vote is. Considering that each basic ID for those without cost at least $10 to the government that's millions of dollars for each state just for those that don't have a basic ID to be able to vote. I don't suppose you're going to want to pay for it with your tax dollars are you? Especially not with all the extra paperwork for real ID that cost another $10 more.
@PatrickBryson... The local government doesn't have to pay for anything when it comes to IDs and what little it costs is more than manageable.
