This weekend I started to disassemble the front brake calipers on the the 300SD. I will be rebuilding them as opposed to replacement. Ran into a little snag with parts however. Also, I've developed a little easier way to extract the braking
    support bracket bushings.
This is the kit I am returning: (It does not contain small rubber washers located between the two halves of the caliper)

This is the kit I ordered to replace the FTE kit:

hi. great videos, keep them coming. I have a 1984 300 sd. needs alot of work, and you have super videos. You have saved me a ton of cash.

Great videos.. I got a 300 sd and have many "w 126 fix it" videos on my channel

Thanks for your video, it helped me. I ordered the same kit for my bendix calipers, I must say this job was a PIA, I had trouble getting rubber boots to wrap around caliper base where it seals. Also had trouble with the metal round washer looking things that secure the rubber boot to the piston, didn't want to fit at all so I used the old ones. Monkeying around with the air compressor to get the pistons out was fun.. All in all everything turned out great and I didn't have to pay someone else to do it.

That metal ring is quite troublesome. I had to work at it for a WHILE. lol

FYI blow out the pistons when the caliper is together and use a rag between the opening. Nothing like having a piston fly out. Limit your risk! Also if a piston is stuck use a "piston popper" Dumb move with the non impact socket use. Loctite is not needed on the surfaces at all. The galley seal does the work.

My calipers were not leaking either when I did the brakes so left them alone. When you have to drive your one and only car to work you can't let yourself get sidetracked. These 80s MBs are the best cars ever made and run forever.
My 2001 e320 just pisses me off with its plastic and electronics. Might as well have been made in China!

Yeah since this car is not my primary vehicle I can take my time. I decided to rebuild the calipers mainly because I had never done it before and I already had the entire front end taken apart. I have a 2000 e320 Wagon. Everything in it works as it should. (except the built in analog cell phone) What I hate is the crap paint and the interior. Headliner is crap. Needs to be replaced. It runs like a freight train however and carries lots of people and stuff.

@@ImpalamansGarage You gotta love those dual plug v6s. Mine is a rocket! It needs motor mounts and I can't afford to have them replaced right now. About $500 to get it done. I'm to old now to tackle it myself. I have to drive it very easy but I have a lead foot. Oh weeelll. Lol
My car was a bit abused before I got it. The fasteners on the rear sunshade broke so instead of fixing that, they took the switch out and replaced the console plate with one from a car that did not have the option. Da! With no manual I had to ask the MB dealer where that switch was supposed to be. I am in Vegas so need that shade. What a pain. And as you said, bad paint.

Bendix original kits used to come with the o-rings between the two halves, ATE kits did not. Either way, it is not recommended to separate the halves unless it leaks and in that case is best to use a new caliper. Proof of that is that you cannot find in any Mercedes repair manual, Bendix or ATE documents the torque value to tighten the bolts of the two halves. Furthermore, the sealing between the two halves is also done by applying Loctite on the mating surfaces at assembly, not only new o-rings. Oh, one other thing: please don't use or show people that using a thin wall socket with an impact gun is okay. Doing so, one day someone may get hurt.

Just because there is no manual around, doesn't mean you can't tackle a job using your head. >> " the sealing between the two halves is also done by applying Loctite on the mating surfaces at assembly" Please provide documentation on this if available. >> "please don't use or show people that using a thin wall socket with an impact gun is okay". A better way to tackle this sort of concern is for you to make your own video regarding the use of tools.

@@ImpalamansGarage I will have to look for the Loctite application between the two halves as I do not remember which Loctite (number) that was, where I saw it and I have few calipers to refresh too, so I will need to know. When I find it, I will come back and add it for future reference. Regarding the use of use of non-impact sockets on impact guns: I don't have any concern for me, my concern is for others less experienced that will copy you and extend that rule to everything they do because they may think that is okay. I think the right way to tackle this sort of concern is for people to show the correct use of tools in their videos.
I noticed from your videos that you sort of "approximate" how something is done and use your technical feeling. That is good for you and it may work on many cars, but on the W126 that works less and the use of a hammer was highly discouraged on these cars. Mercedes made a lot of specialized tools for the 126 model, maybe too many (which could have been reduced by a different design). The repair procedures are available too. I saw you are a member of BenzWorld. Asking for a particular repair section of the FRM will avoid any guessing and I am sure it will be offered to you. I hope to see you and others on the 126Board forum, you will hear more and more about that forum in the future, I promise you!

@@royfrancois2360 If you looked at my other videos you would know that I have a full copy of the Factory Service Manual on this car and I reference it for all of the projects on this car. In fact, I share it freely to those who email me and ask. However you are correct in that there are no documented torque settings for the bolts holding the calipers together. If the manual calls for the use of a highly specialized expensive tool I may or may not take that route. This is where practicality comes into play.
