- Ecuador used to be one of Latin America's most peaceful countries - but in the last few years it descended into chaos as Mexican drug cartels started to move cocaine through its ports and recruit local affiliates. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
In recent weeks, two major gang leaders escaped from prison - reigniting a turf war that has left dozens dead.
The president declared a state of emergency and sent the army on to the streets to support the police.
Our Latin America Correspondent Guillermo Galdos has been to the port city Guayaquil to find out whether the crackdown is working.
Warning: this film contains distressing scenes from the very start.

Dear friends,
The news report states:
"Ecuador used to be one of Latin America's most peaceful countries - but in the last few years it descended into chaos as Mexican drug cartels started to move cocaine through its ports and recruit local affiliates..."
So what happened with Ecuador, how come from a peaceful country it transformed into a bubble of chaos?
Falun Dafa provides and answer.
The very purpose of this world is to allow people to return to Heaven. There is no other purpose, no other goal. It is to have people repay their karma and through spiritual self cultivation return to kindness and righteousness, eventually making it back to Heaven. Falun Dafa is saving people. And the evil CCP is persecuting Falun Dafa practitioners who adhere to Truth, Compassion, Forbearance.
Whose side the world's people chose decides their future: salvation or elimination.
Those who don't want to be saved, they are marked for elimination. Chaos and instability will ravage the land...

Both the government and the theater made the same decision, and they flagrantly breached the contract. The following year, Greece’s entire economy collapsed. Didn’t it? Last year Shen Yun went to Ecuador to perform, but wasn’t permitted to. Although it was the wicked CCP disrupting things behind the scenes, the decision was nevertheless made by the government. I lived in Ecuador for 3 years and have been all over and can confirm Guayaquil is definitely the roughest in all of Ecuador. The small cities are very peaceful and the people are friendly
That's false. Bukele met violence with more violence and things improved drastically. Argentina in the late 70's as well.
Responding to the very last line in the narrative
Buekele had a smaller territory and loosely organized gangs while Ecuador is dealing with more sophisticated drug traffickers. Definitely not the same.
@orod3102 crime was more widespread and institutionalized in El Salvador. Yet Bukele infiltrated every corner of the country and made it incredibly better.
Without political corruption you can easily fix any city. Especially if you have a military. Some innocent people may pay the ultimate price, but it's a necessary sacrifice. More people are affected if nothing is done.
You're totally right. Corruption in governments it's the base of this chaos. Once the corrupted people is down, things start to change. Bukele is doing it very well.
Brazil was also far less violent when the military was in control, the civilian governments have completely lost all control over crime with weak laws and a constitution that favours criminals with small or practically non existent punishment
Not in El Salvador.
Bukele totally changed things around.
Yeah but he is too slowly becoming a dictator, that is a slippery slope.

“When violence is met with violence things only get worse”
This guy obviously hasn’t been following what’s happening in El Salvador.
It's no longer about territorial wars between countries. This is the modern war of powerful criminal groups popping up within society
But brought on by US interference again. US petrol companies. US dollar.
In the US they are all over and in control of the government. Ecuador has not been completely corrupted yet and is fighting back.
True there , there are probably 70 plus major intense gangs w affiliates, in California.
Stop asking "at what price", the price is pay every day. That loaded question is the same that the opposition ask Bukele, protecting delinquents with the story of Human Rights.
He’s says that cause inevitably, innocent people will be caught up and suffer. Hypothetically, let say the guy who forgot the code to the phone was forced to store the weapons by the gangs, he can’t say no or he will end up like the barber and he has a family. But the military still beats him ups. Surely he deserves fair trial?
@@readabookdummy This is a balancing act. The main question is whether the inevitable loss of some innocent people worth the damage done to more innocents by the criminals they are going after? Consider these criminals like weeds in a garden that are sucking the vitality from society. When you uproot them, the roots of the weeds can sometimes damage the surrounding plants you want to protect and rough up the soil. However, keeping those weeds will eventually drain the vitality from the rest of the crops.

Thank you for worring about my country a little bit, when people pay attention the government is motivated to act.
Reporters often forget to mention the fact prohibition is the failure that made cartels so strong.
Funny how the gov't creates the opportunity for gangs to come in. Not give police to do their jobs. So ppl will say "yes, plz military in our streets". Create the problem, come with the solution
It's not the drugs that are the problem. It's the prohibition of drugs that create criminals and cartels.
Two replies above me are midwits.
Cali legalized recreational weed and the weed fields down in Mexico got swapped out for Poppy fields. Heroin isn't strong like the stuff from Afghanistan/Asia so they started introducing fentanyl into it to give it a bigger kick. Weed got legal in Cali and a few Western states (yay) but it did the exact opposite of what people have said
The innocence. You really think they wouldn't have done that without weed legalization? There is no reason to make weed ilegal anyways. Do you think that if alcohol and tabaco had been ilegal that they wouldn't have gotten into heroine? Of course not, every ilegal drug increases their profits.

Fixing the demand side takes too long. In the meantime prohibition delivers drug profits to the cartels.

Very misleading lines. Ecuador is not a narco state. Drug trafficking influence may have penetrated certain government institutions and political circles, but it has not overtaken key institutions (at least not yet). Surely, the dollarization of the country's economy has paved the way for major laundering of drug money; but, from there to be a narco state, it's a stretch. Democratic institutions may be rather weak, but still stand up to counter narco leverage.
