A few days ago, Ms Willis-Sorensen sang perhaps the most sensational Donna Anna in DON GIOVANNI I've ever heard. My Donna Annas include Sutherland, Vaness, Radvanovsky, Price (both Margaret and Leontyne), Renee Fleming, and Christine Goerke. Ms. Willis-Sorensen, in the performance telecast from Covent Garden on Thursday evening, was sensational by any standard, and perhaps the most glorious I've ever heard. The voice is big, lustrous, flexible, and gorgeous. That she managed to standout from her colleagues, and give a flawless performance is astonishing. Just 24, with a number of competitions and honors already under her belt, Willis-Sorensen is a stupendously gifted young pinto-soprano which should make her ideal in her chosen rep--lyric parts in Wagner (Elsa, Eva, Elisabeth, and hopefully Sieglinde), are well within her vocal compass. She wouldn't be my choice for Brunnhilde, unless it is SIEGFRIED, where you need a soaring top voice, and plenty of mettle in the middle voice to ride Wagner's big orchestra. She has the entire Strauss cannon at her feet: The Marschallin, Arabella, the Empress, Chrysothemis, Intermezzo, are just a few of the Strauss heroines she might explore. My point is to keep our eyes open to this possibilities here. Ms. Willis-Sorensen's career could take her directly to the top ranks of international sopranos. She's a fine, sympathetic actress. While I've not heard the voice in the flesh yet, I hope someone will wrote about the richness, ease on top and excitement this kind of voice generates. Check out her videos. You can can claim you were recommending her long before she became an artist of the people.
