The wires weren't visual metaphors, he shot this live, guitar and vocals. The feed fed into his phone in his back pocket under the gown, and I think they used Zoom to transmit the signal. No miming or lip syncing here. Three stationary cameras and one handheld. They did 4 takes, used the fourth, with the monolog at the end coming from the third take.

By and large, this was a 'one-take performance' as far as the audio goes, and only the director's wish to use some closeup shots required another take (he walked in close and would have been in the field of view of the other cameras).

The flickering lights are an integral part of the performance. Maybe you noticed, but didn't mention it, but the lights flickered every time the dark/negative self was speaking and would stay constantly illuminated while the good/positive side was speaking. This was an important distinction because after he succumbed to the negative self, was brought low, and then picked himself back up, he acknowledges both sides of himself as "two sides of the same coin". Finally when he goes back to singing (the yodel at the end), we see the lights again flickering, signifying that he has come to terms with, and is content with, the turbulence inside of himself instead of suppressing it and causing problems.

If no mentioned a brief history, Ren was discovered by a talent scout busking with his mate around 19, and was signed to Sony records. During the making of his 1st album, he was taken very ill that confined to bed, with severe pain, the illness made unable to perform, and Sony eventually dropped him. Ren said he was in consent pain, but the Doctors, physiotherapists ect., kept telling him it was all in his mind, that certainly didn't help his mental illness, taking 10yrs to finally been proven right about the genuine pain he was suffering. 10yrs later he was finally diagnosed with, Lyme Disease, which over that time had ravaged his body. He's still going over to Canada for stem cell treatment.

Excellent reaction. Jung’s shadow concept is even visually used by Ren. Look at lighting use in the video. When the positive side says he will kill the shadow side the light flashes for the first on the positive side during the exchange of dialogue. The ending reprise of the first vocal with the flashing lights indicates the integration of the two personality traits. Ren has reached the serenity to accept the dance, the courage to change the steps in his dance to move forward. He has the understanding and wisdom from being a victim and student of psychological warfare. The shadow on the side is very pronounced on the floor. Also notice REN’s earring with the cross.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony.
Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure.
Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition.
Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

Thank you for your time. If you want to see him truly be a Bard you have to see "The Tale of Jenny and Screech" it's basically a play in 3 acts (act 1 Jenny, act 2 Screech, act 3 Violet IN THAT ORDER) In it he plays the part of the Bard it starts in London 2019 (two zero one nine) in a place called Paddington. Great reaction! I recommend the Tale of Jenny and Screech (the whole thing, 13 minutes long, a three parter (Tale of Jenny, Screech and then Violet)). And maybe you could rewind for 5 or 10 seconds when you stop, it makes it easier to follow in my opinion and gives you the chance to catch all the things without risking to miss one because you accidentally stopped at an inopportune moment. But that's just a suggestion. Keep up the good work. Really enjoyed your reaction.

I've watched a lot of reaction videos to Hi Ren, I thought yours was on another level. The whole dark vs. light, then coming to the conclusion of being a 'whole' person instantly had me thinking of Jung too, and how he said it was a shame Jesus wasn't presented as a whole person. We can't reject half of ourselves and be in anything other than psychological warfare, a battle that cannot be won, it is more a case of learning to tame our destructive impulses than exorcise them, they have motivating factors we need for survival as well. It is about finding balance in the continuum. Getting that point across for people to consider is a powerful contribution by Ren. I think being taught to reject half of the self is more about breaking people down for the purposes of social control, which has nothing to do with God and everything to do with humans and hierarchy. I also agree to avoid medicine wherever possible, most of them seem to cause more issues than they cure, which is further $$$ for big Pharma. Eat and sleep well, exercise in nature, avoid poisons like drugs and alcohol - these all go a LONG way towards mental health. All the best from a fellow Photographer.

You may be overanalyzing, however he's been dealing with being ill, and having been misdiagnosed for years. He did his own research trying to figure out anything that would work for him prior to finally being correctly diagnosed with Lyme's Disease. However until then he was treated as though his symptoms were all generated from him head and weren't in fact real in his body; ie mental illness and given drugs to 'fix' it that couldn't correct the problem because it wasn't all in his head. Ren is smart, as well as being well read. Ren is a song writer, poet, singer, rapper and multi-instrumentalist. He refers to his genre as bardcore, which is fitting as in some of his pieces he certainly embodies a modern day bard.

You may notice at the start, the lights don't flash, but then with the ending sequence, they do. I interpreted that as him accepting that it takes ALL of him to create something beautiful and that is what's so tragic about his situation! There is a fine line between genius and insanity!

Nice work. Just subbed to your channel. A more mature, sensible, empathic, and honest take that speaks to me. Appreciated the photography reference as well as your nod to your own self-focused qualities -- we all got something we're working with, after all. One suggestion -- rewind 5 seconds after each pause to ensure you/we don't miss anything.

You were talking about his guitar styles at the start . I wish u reacted to his song called “Ren - The Tale of Jenny & Screech” because no one never mentioned medieval style what i caught too. And in this song its on another level as well you will feel like in real theatre. All done live as this one and one of the best ones he has.

I'm sure the other two that you've got in the queue are likely Chalk Outlines ft Chinchilla (live), which is hauntingly beautiful, and The Tale of Jenny & Screech (full), which features his amazing guitar, singing, and storytelling skills.
Illest of Our Time was the 3rd release for his upcoming album, the 2nd being Sick Boi, which also goes hard.
The whole of his back catalog is full of greatness. A few of his older pieces that I'm particularly fond of are: Ocean ft Eden Nash. Humble ft Eden Nash. Children of the Moon.

At exactly 3:01 when you made the statement about being sick for a long time and how Doctor's treat you.. that was when I hit the subscribe button because *you* get it. Ren Gill has an auto immune disorder called Lyme Disease, but he was misdiagnosed for years. He was told that it was all in his head, literally. His mind was making his body sick. Check out his other songs "Chalk Outlines" (With Chinchilla) and "Sick Boi". Another cool thing about Ren is you'll notice all his videos are filmed as a live performance and in one take. Also, "Jenny and Screech" (which is actually 3 songs), and "Bittersweet symphony" are fantastic as well. Welcome to the Ren rabbit hole!!

I love it when people make the bard or troubadour connection. Ren calls his genre "Bardcore"
The lights flash when it's the maniacal persona being a bit chaotic. I think the lights during the ending that you mention are representing the battle between the two sides. also, notice the shadows on the floor in the panoramic view from the changes between the v voices. The lighting is set so the shadows change intensity and direction. Also, the chord progressions and strumming style changes between the characters. He does a great job of picking up the chord sequence exactly where he left off when he drops the accompaniment. He almost never drops a beat when he interrupts the music. Ren is an amazing artist.

Wow. What you caught in that one video is amazing, such as your Alan Watts observation. New to Ren, I’ve fully gone down the rabbit hole and really enjoying it. Since you brought up philosophy, here’s my thought…
That said, I caught some things in this video but more so in some of his rap songs that, well, had me curious as to some of the deeper meanings or rather, philosophy behind those. Curious in a concerned way. Just this morning I settled in that there was strong Alan Watts imagery here. From there, I hear some other things and they don’t completely mix with the Alan Watts stuff. If you watch much of him, including his Twitch livestreams, he very much embraces the “it is what it is” statement. That has resonated with me too the last couple of years. He says a lot of “as above so below” but what his source of inspiration is curious. I don’t think it is what I suspected as is doesn’t jive with other known things about him. Also, that phrase is echoed in many philosophies, not just one place (and it is a catchy phrase). In his really beautiful piece, Bittersweet Symphony (a Verve reatake) he even likens that phrase to a simple thing such as the sun mirroring people rising to go to work. I think he has read a lot and been exposed to a lot culturally as an artist. As a rapper, I believe he grabs hold of lots of symbolism and phrases to stock away for when he needs them for a lyric. So, for now, I’m thinking he has dealt with a lot of suffering and looked to find meaning or figure out if it was his destiny or karma to get sick. He has settled on making peace with any behaviors as a youth as just recognizing he isn’t perfect and “it is what it is”.
But really, it is easy to overthink things when there are other possible meanings. Like, at the end of Illest of our Time it was tempting to look for a deep philosophical meaning. He talks of being banished from the heavens and knocking on the sky and depression being a blessing in disguise and then following intuition. My first go to is philosophy. But, knowing the back story, that he was signed to Sony when he was much younger and then dropped when he became very ill so now he is independent. I actually think this is talking career. He still wants to rise in fame but he can experiment with all kinds of stuff and take risks that a big recording studio would not allow. He can follow his intuition. In other places in his rap, I think it is just stuff thrown in to complete the rhyme scheme. I also think a lot is directed at the music industry ( I think Eminem is the ‘king’ he metaphorically refers to that he wants to replace or dethrone). In fact, the theme of some of his later rap is a bit of bravado just taunting the rap industry empire to say, I’m here, take notice. So I am backpedaling on thinking there are deep ‘philosophies’ that he is connected to.
First and foremost he is all about his craft. 100%. He plays multiple instruments. His piano skills are expert! Ditto with guitar. I don’t know the level of training there but it seems he’s classically trained. Other stuff too. He has taken University theater classes. He has self taught audio mixing and worked his butt off.
I am along for the ride. Totally enjoying what he is bringing to music!!!

The pendulum analogy was one I struggled on for a little while, until I was talking with my mum one day in general about life's tests and how they will always come around in the best of times as a reminder of where we've come from and to see how we a resilient we've become. I said to her that at times in my life I felt in such darkness that it became the norm, you adapt and even darkness feels comfortable. But in the last couple of years where I've finally been able to make moves in life and improve things the light has began to shine somewhat, but like I said, the tests have also inevitably come also and the feeling of heading back into a dark place is so much more intense than I ever remember it being. So I suppose in that sense when things are going good in life, we aren't so used to being resilient in times of darkness as we have a taste for the light and how good things can be.

Ren is English, we don't get charged for healthcare... there are sometimes problems with the system at times, but overall, at least we don't have to sell our house because we get sick. Ren suffered mis-diagnosis, which is a nightmare I've been through in the past too, but the treatment once a problem is correctly identified is superb. And free. :)

You watch it all unfold so easily, as he gains his confidence and instead of looking to his left he now looks to the viewers. Also notice the 2 shadows on the floor and the lamps flickering each time his alter speaks. Super well done symbolism and cinematography

!7:25. I prefer the term 'non-attachment' to 'indifference'. Getting identified with anything becomes a reinforcement of the ego, and makes it difficult to remain just a witness. Indifference indicates a lack of care...very different to a witnessing mindfulness.

Ren is from wales which has a rich deep history of druidism and bardic culture. This was abolished with the rise of christianity, but it has gone through periods of emergence. Ren is tapping into this rich history in many ways, whether this is conscious or it is coming through him? It is a perfect depiction of Jung's descent to soul. It is very sophisticated psychological and spiritual representation of self. Great reaction!
