Hi Katie, that clock belonged to George Harrison. He bought it at a shop in Providence Rhode Island back in 1997 while visiting his son who was attending Brown University. He took it home to England with him. Years later after George had died, George's wife, Olivia, decided to put the clock on the mantel. Just when she did that, the phone rang. It’s Paul, and he begins to remind her of a third song that was with the two songs, ‘Real Love’ and ‘Free As a Bird’ that they recorded in 1995. Olivia told Paul, ‘I remember it.’ Then Paul said, ‘It’s called “Now and Then.” Standing there with the phone in one hand, looking at the clock that said "Now and Then". Olivia was sort of dumbfounded and she said, ‘I think this is George saying it’s OK.’”

I'm an OG Beatles fan and have so many memories. I remember pleading with parents in 1964 to let me stay up to see the Beatles second performance at the end of the Ed Sullivan show which they did. I can remember walking from our house to the Navy Exchange on base to buy Abbey Road when it came out.
When this song came out I thought of younger fans like you getting to experience a new Beatles single release.
I love the song. It and for some reason Real Love have been stuck in my head all week. I'm glad they got Peter Jackson to do the video. Fantastic is all I can say. Now if they will only give him the Hamburg tape to work his magic on i will be in heaven.
Happy birthday. Now when you are as old as me you will be able to tell young fans then that,"Yes, children, I remember when the last Beatles song came out. Ah, what a wonderful memory." And they will look on you with envy.
    Peace and Love.

I was a junior in high school when the Beatles came on Sullivan show. My life kinda changed that night. After i got outa Air Force, I bought a Hofner bass & Vox amp, and joined a band. None of the Beatles read music. I think that is why their music is so different. I thought i was worlds biggest Beatles fan, but you may have me beat! Beatles magic! 😮

Happy Birthday! I enjoyed listening to Now and Then. They did a great job on putting everything together from John's demo tape and the continuation of the work done from the Anthology sessions. Of course, the music video ran the gamut of emotions for me. The final bow at the end really got me. The domino with the 2 & 3 on the back is interesting because "23" also appears on the album cover for the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. A fitting ending, in my opinion.

Hi Katie. Happy Birthday! It's so wonderful to see a young person today as such a dedicated Beatles fan. I myself am 67 and listened to Now And Then 42 times in the first day of its release. In the 1960s, I was fortunate to have very understanding and patient parents, who although not quite understanding about my love for this strange new music, nonetheless bought me each album (and some 45s) when they came out. When I decided to start drums in 1965, my dad bought me my first Ludwig snare ("Dad, they have to be Ludwig because that's what Ringo plays!"). Dad got me a new Ludwig drum for every birthday and Christmas until I had a huge drum kit. (Little did I know at the time that my drums were made in the same molds that Ringo's were!) One story for you from December 1964. My parents, brother & I were driving past endless cornfields in Nebraska or somewhere. A distinctive drum sound, then guitar, came over the radio. I knew right away, before hearing any voice, who it was. I screamed as I scrambled over the car seat, "Mom! Dad! Turn it up!! It's a new Beatles song!!" The song was What You're Doing - and each time I hear it I am taken back to that wonderful moment, that beautiful era, when the Beatles changed the world. I'm so happy to see the joy you get from the Beatles. It will not wear off. Trust me on that.

My first impression of Now and Then was that it's a good John Lennon song. Good enough that he would have eventually put it on one of his own albums had he lived longer. Since then it's been growing on me... That blue vinyl single you got looks cool, with the old school Apple and Parlophone labels.
I decided that my Now and Then purchase is going to be the CD versions of the Red and Blue albums, since I still have my old vinyl copies and the CDs will have all the songs in chronological order [and remixed], and the vinyl versions will be the same song order as the old ones with the extra songs added on a third disc.
Anyway, keep on keeping on your magical mystery tour...

In the moment Paul called Olivia, she looked at the clock and had a feeling in hear heart, that George would be enthusiastic now to make this song come true.- Very emotional story, I think. It's so good to see you back again after your long absence. Like you I wasn't blown away by Now and Then on the first hearing. However, after several replays I was able to appreciate the work they did on it to bring it to life. I don't know for sure but I have a theory about why they didn't include some of the changes John did on the original demo. As part of this project it was important to all concerned that all four former Beatles appear on the final recording. When you read the back story of how the song was developed, it states that Paul, Ringo and George attempted to 'finish' the song for the Anthology series in 1994 but abandoned it due to the technical limitations of the time. My theory is that George only played on the parts that were used in the final 2023 recording. To include the missing parts would mean that only John, Paul and Ringo would be present. Maybe? I agree that the video produced by Peter Jackson was amazing! However he did it, it was magical. Happy belated birthday and don't make us wait too long (if I can borrow a line from George) for your next posting. 🙂

Hi Katie! Nice to see you again! Happy Birthday!
This song and video took me into a dream...
I have my theory about the back cover: the minute hand is in the 11 + number 9 = 20; the hour hand is in the 2 + number 3= 23 (2023).
    Then 2 buttons and 3 points + the line = 6, plus the 2 points of the domino = 62 (1962).
I think this (or maybe I have drunk enough today 😄)

When I first heard it I wasn't sure quite what to expect and felt somewhat underwhelmed. But then I found myself humming it, and it's something of an earworm, and now I really like it. Of course the song wasn't really finished by John and I think Paul didn't want to add too much to it and it all become about him. It was very much about John, I think. Anyhoo I like it a lot now. Hi again! I think maybe because the song doesn't comply with a more developed conventional structure it's kind of standing out more? From that lovely melody in the opening verse, John's voice sounding graceful and emotive the movement through the orchestrated build up is very powerful. You used 'hypnotic' and that's a good description.
Let's face it this is a gift to us all and there are no quibbles from me about the validity of the project. We're so lucky.
I reckon if someone got you that clock, the real one owned by George as a surprise, you wouldn't want it LoL. It's the worst clock I've ever seen. That vinyl though is lovely. Keep the faith.

I know what you're talking about with how they left out the parts of the song John did on the original demo. I suspect they shortened it for radio play. That is done a lot. Radio doesn't like to play anything longer than about 3 to 4 minutes long. You would be surprised how many hit songs of the past on the radio have been edited down to about 3 - 3-1/2 minutes for radio when on the albums they are actually much longer. (CCR's version of "Heard it Through The Grapevine" was something like 11 minutes long on the "Cosmos Factory" album. But they edited it down to abut 3 minutes for the radio single) Someone has actually posted the longer unedited mix of "Now and Then" on UA-cam earlier today. It's like about 6 minutes long or so.

I know you said you are in college, and I know how time-consuming that is. Plus, when you get older doing this may fade a bit. You don’t have to answer, just curios. Take care and have much success at school. Russell

Katie, I'd like to ask if you've ever listened to these classic movies soundtracks : "Saturday Night Fever (1977)", "Grease (1978)", "Stayin' Alive (1983) that whose this third movie has a direction of "Sylvester Stallone". If you ever listened, what did you think about that soundtracks? but if you didn't, I'd advise you to listen, I believe you would love these soundtracks!

Unfortunately all the pre-release hype of "Now And Then" all but guaranteed it to be a bit of a letdown to many fans. It has been met with mixed reviews from fans. The song isn't of Beatles quality and for me it was one listen out of curiosity and that was enough. The most controversial aspect is whether this song can be an actual Beatles record. My take on it is no. How can it be? Just because Paul McCartney says it is? Lennon recorded "Now And Then" as a demo and it was not released. The Beatles officially disbanded in 1970 so when Lennon recorded the song they hadn't been a band for eight years. I know people say it doesn't matter because all four Beatles were involved in reviving the song. Really? Maybe so but since the song wasn't recorded in the '60s during the Beatles time together I say it's a stretch to call it "The last Beatles song". If Peter Jackson has his say it will be far from the last Beatles song. He wants to mine every single second of Beatles music to find releasable music. In the words of Paul McCartney, just let it be.
