As a thirty year veteran of the teacher wars, what you said is perfect. Also, and feel free to use this--(ok you can give me credit...) find something you can like in every kid and let them know it because....that kid may be your aid in the nursing home who is navigating your wheelchair down a hill or as in my case the other day, that kid was the scrub nurse who was prepping me for cataract surgery.. Glad she had very fond memories her freshman year art class. I mean...what could have gone wrong?!? Thanks for all the empathy and all the laughs

I would argue that high school kids don't always have the skills to manage flexible seating! Learned that the hard way!

Pressed like as soon as I heard 'Use your sick days'. 1000% wish I did this in my first year. Worked myself to the bone the first year. Now I look back and I'm like, Why tho? Why did I do that?

Document is right! I saved emails and paperwork like I was a hoarder my first year in a new district due to previous experiences. It saved my rump big time when a set of parents tried to say I hadn’t done my due diligence. Totally not true and I had the proof. Administration backed me up. Documenting can save you even if it seems silly, like wasting time, and overkill. Do it!

Your first year of teaching will just about ensure you'll use your sick days. Fifty years ago, a friend of mine started his first year of teaching. He got mumps, measles, chicken pox, and a couple bouts of flu. He said he was surprised that his contract was renewed.

Know your contract for sick days. At my school, they can be collected to 220 days and paid out to a 403b at a certain amount at retirement. Also, if sick days roll over, you might need them if you have a medical situation - to prevent going unpaid.

Field Trips way back in the early ‘80’s was a nightmare. We used to take 16-18 kids on the city bus. There were 3 of as mandated by The Days Nursery Act for Preschool/Daycare. Still a nightmare. We were so happy when we could get Parents to come. I still remember the few major mishaps that could of ended differently. Examples: A child falling off a slide even though I told them not to go on the slide till an adult was there to watch them, a child who decided he wanted to go in a different door than the rest of our group. I turned my head for a minute and the kid took off. Luckily, he went to the classroom and not elsewhere. I then became a chronic head counter Whether in class or outdoors, or anywhere. I even did it when I did Home Daycare.🇨🇦

Documenting everything is key. Remember that unless you have it in writing it's your word against either another member of staff (who will probably be more senior and more liked than you) or a child and a parent will probably believe their child over you. Get (ideally written) evidence to back up your claims. Also spoken agreements are like dandelion seeds, they are there until there is struggle then they're gone.

Yes, document EVERYTHING. And do NOT keep your documentation on a school computer or in a binder in your classroom or on the district supplied them drive. Make a copy. Keep the copy safely secured in your dwelling. Keep the original in a safe deposit box or some other secure place AWAY FROM SCHOOL.

I went on my first field trip as a teacher this year. HORRIBLE! It was a 1 to 1 ratio with my class. The other class that came with us had about a 6 to 1 student to adult ratio. The other class was so much more behaved than my class. We were at our state capital and I was so embarrassed. Needless to say I needed an XL Dunkin iced coffee in the morning.

I once left a child sitting under a table ( preschool) while I took the class to the primary school library! (It was on the same grounds as the preschool). OMG! I thought for sure he'd tell his parents. My assistant and I were good friends so she didn't say anything. I felt awful for the child. This was nearly 40 years ago. I went on to have a great
    teaching career.

I actually left a kid in his cubby because I didn't see him and he was hiding behind his hanging coat. We went out to recess and I didn't miss him for a while 30 minutes. He was still there wondering why no one came to look for him.

I had to stop teaching because of sick days and personal days. I used to use them when I needed to - thank you, autoimmune disease - but then I was diagnosed with a neurological disorder on top of my autoimmune disease and suddenly there weren’t enough sick days and personal days for me. I had to pay a sub out of my own pocket. I worked out a deal with one particular sub so he’d be my sub whenever I needed him, which helped both me and the students have an easier time with the situation. In the end, though, I wasn’t earning enough to make teaching a viable career. Because in the United States, if you get sick, you’re just out of luck. I hate this country.

Document everything.. date time … this is for everything what your principal says, what another staff member says , students, parents.. document it . Documents it. It can be used for proof.. I speak from exp. Because I document 8 incidents date and time … i got to work with a better ta.. why because.. proof the previous ta was bad.. they were able to then check the video camera based on dates and times I gave them
About incidents.. document it.. good or bad document it..

That's how I felt at my secretarial job and after 35 years and changes galore (way more work, stress, minimal pay increases, incompetent employees), I knew it was time for me to retire. It's been 7 years and no regrets...even with paying for my own healthcare out of my pension and now Soc Secr. Life with little to no political/bureaucratic upper management crap has been worth it.
