This advice is flawed. Even if you work for an ABN, the employer at the end of the financial year is required to lodge a form called “taxable payment annual report” also known as TPAR with the ATO. In the TPAR, the employer is required to list separately all the ABNs they paid during the year along with exactly how much was paid for each ABN. The ATO data is directly linked to the Department of immigration. The department of immigration can do the following with this data: 1. Match it with the ABN holders individual tax return lodged. If the information on the TPAR is different to what’s on the personal tax return, it would trigger an audit. 2. Even if the two reports match, the department of immigration can look at how much has been earned on the ABN and assess if its “reasonable” for a student to earn that much money for 20 hours. In both these instances the student will face deportation if an anomaly is found. Please be careful when relying on information from UA-cam by people who are unqualified to give that information. Speak to a reputed tax accountant or a reputed immigration lawyer (not the dodgy ones)
