Such a great video. As a player with an aggressive swing speed (irons 109&Driver 124-128) I often find it hard to find testing content i can relate to and benefit from. You guys knocked this one out of the park.
I’m right there with you bud. Hard to find anything about the rebar shafts I need to keep my ball flight in control. Forever I was stuck with dynamic gold x sevens and I knew there was something better out there that didn’t feel like a weird x-100. I hit the L series in 5x and I think the TX will work for me. Crossing my fingers since I can’t find a place that carries them for fittings 😂
Nice video. Thanks guys! Would love to see Matt+Leo hitting the Dart V, MMT, and Axiom. Then another one where they play around with the 105 class vs the 125 class.
Nice to see a comparison of steel and graphite with similar weights. For me it is getting the correct shaft weight first, then decided on flex and material. I started with 70 gm graphite iron shafts and switched to 95gm graphite shafts, which was a huge improvement. At 95 gm I could use either steel or graphite. To me the difference is the loss of vibration hitting the ball. Be nice to see more videos comparing graphite and steel at similar weights, or a video focused on shaft weight as the initial focus point in the fitting.
Interesting video and surprising results. Obviously, graphite has come a long way in recent years. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more graphite on tour and high level am events over the next few years.
Not seen the whole video yet but interested as when I got fitted for irons last year I was keen to try lighter steel shafts than the standard dynamic gold r300 I used at the time - basically I hit r300 right, stiff 105 gram straight & 80 gram left - no brainier decision! Great to open up the subject Matt👍
I love My 130g KBS C-Taper X-flex. They have a lot of feel for the weight and stiffness, although some of that creates a slightly higher ball flight than I’d ideally like. It’s a trade off.
I tried graphite a number of years ago. Dispersion and feel secured a “no” vote from myself and the fitter. Now I’m in my 50’s, and the tech has advanced it may be time to revisit the graphite option. X100 (at 130 grams) isn’t suiting my tempo, and my kbs 110s are just borderline too light. Perhaps there’s something in it for me.
Would be curious to see on a follow up how he plays golf with that height and spin. It looks great in a simulator but at least here in Texas it would be pretty tough for him to get around the course. Maybe for fun in the next video change balls and give him Bryson lofts to see if that puts him in a better window. Of course with that speed spin and height will always be a challenge but I would love to see the fitters there take on this challenge to show their diversity and expertise.
Greetings, how much should the graphite shafts be cut without affecting the flexibility? I bought a Senior rod and cut it to size -.5 for my size and I have good control but they don't feel like senior flex. What could I have done wrong? I hope for your professional help. Thank you.
Thanks Matty for the graphite iron shaft video. I'm excited to try these out. You thinking about giving these a go at all in your bag? Seems like it could be right in your ballpark
I thought the big deal with graphite shafts are how smooth is your transition (smooth transitions work well with graphite), quick transitions are more problematic (hence steel being heavier is better, or so the claim goes).
Hey, realized I haven't seen a vid from you in awhile. I hope you're playing a bunch of golf! Request: if you could make one of those videos where you hit a par 3 hole like 50 times in a single session, it would be nice. The way you talk through your shots is so informative. Maybe a few different distances even. Peace & Pars
Bryson plays graphite shafts. We know what his speed is like. I recently did a fitting and the A series of LA’s shaft performed the best. Was surprised. The technology has gotten so far advanced that we have to get away from our old way of thinking. Other news how the hell did he get so fast? Dude is a beast. I lost some speed the last 6 months and starting a speed training regimen while I do my swing change and I would love know what this guy does. I wanna get back to my old swing speed for next tournament season since this one will be a wash unfortunately.
Put him in a Fuji pro 115 tx it’s got 7” pts and is low balance pt. I’ve been in it for 4 years . I’m never going back to steel. I’m only 41 but I stayed playing golf at 4 and it’s so much easier on your joints. It’s probably going to add another decade to my playing.
Really considering graphite because my modus 120x has hurt my elbow since most of my practice is on a range mat. Curious what good graphite shafts are that are still above 100g and don’t flight the ball super high (price friendly and near 100-120g, LA shafts are pricey)
As insane as it is, I think that kind of speed can be a curse when trying to play real golf. Imagine having to hit into any kind of wind with a 140ft high 8k spin 7i? 207 carry prob goes to about 180 in a heart beat. You have to become an expert at hitting soft feely punch shots which takes so much skill.
I want to ask about graphite shafts my friend and I both hit a seven iron about 150 he went out and bought brand new clubs with graphite shafts and is hitting a pitching wedge 150 now we are both 15 handicap. I’m thinking seriously about going out and buying the same clubs.
I wonder if we'll see lighter True Temper Elevate (they have a 95 gram version) steel or heavier graphite? Supposedly TT Elevate is good for shock absorption on the hands-- although I heard new TT Elevate no longer uses VSS.
Regular steel vs Stiff graphite shafts. Is their stiffness pretty much the same? I'm a newbie to the sport, just a little over two months. With regards to shafts, I currently have irons with Steel Regular flex shafts. Although the label on the shafts say S FLEX so not sure if I'm really swinging a Regular flex. But anyway, I'm thinking of changing to lighter Graphite shafts because of my slow swing speed and a bit of hand & shoulder pain, but I'm not sure what Flex would suit me better - Regular or Stiff? I'm thinking since graphite is a softer shaft already than steel, maybe Regular would be too soft or whippy so I'm leaning towards Stiff for a graphite shaft. I do have Stiff shafts for my driver & 3wood which I'm fine with. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Holy shit - Leo swing speed for what appears to be effortless swinging is bananas! What's his ball speed on driver seeing as he is hitting 150mph 7 iron.
what’s the durability of steel vs graphite? I heard people say they get weak where the club head is and over time they can break easier than steel? is this true?
Im personally not the biggest fan of graphite iron shafts, something weird happens on the downswing with them with makes me feel like the face is pointing in the wrong direction. As a 105mph+ 7iron guy too, i would prefer a regular flex iron shaft over a XS graphite, easier to time. This guys misses though are interesting. Like most people its either straight or “long left”, though his version of long is only an extra like 5yards, vs most people’s extra 10-20 yards. Great striker.
@@sageagbonkhese4091 Hey bud, I usually use irons as sold off the shelf and adapt my swing to fit. I have a current a 3 iron of the same model as the rest of my irons, but with a non-fitted graphite shaft. Rest of the set are on the usual KBS tour. I've also used full sets of graphite shafted irons in the past and find that I lose the face. Though i'd love to try a full custom fitted set one day see the difference.
Unfortunately, an info session like this does not help my decision to switch to graphite. I'm now 50, with lower back pain (marathon runner & avid golfer). I'm still hitting my Titleist AP2 (716) Dynamic Gold S300 very well. I was recently fitted by Titleist (RSA) with T100S and Tensai Reds to save my back & prolong my golf enjoyment as I can (in theory) slow my swing, get a similar distance and thus reduce any back strain. BUT... a costly exercise!
When you go to graphite are you looking for a shaft that is the same weight as your steel shaft or would you be looking to go lighter to gain some speed?
What shaft were you playing before? I am scared on trying this shafts, since I play the Project X LZ 6.5 and LOVE IT however, I have problems with my left wrist, so thinking in playing graphite. Hope you can help me.
well known that graphite can be made stiffer than steel, which is probably why his mishits aren't as offline, height is lower, and spin less, but why do you think his swing path became more neutral?
his brain doesn't have to try and time the stiffer tip section's violent 4D release through the ball as much so he just continues his smooth swing - you can easily feel this yourself if you hit a super-flexible ladies/senior flex shaft and feel the insanity that happens through impact as the club head and shaft massively droop toe down into impact, which drops the club further inside, and then flings/rotates/snaps out into twisting snapping lead deflection through impact - a simpler analogy is swinging a solid steel pole vs a leather belt - the steel pole will have a 'more' neutral path through impact - there's a reason Bryson uses graphite
@@nmaschas it is - that's what I'm saying - the stiffer tip section deflects and twists less as it moves through impact thus creating a more steel-pole-like consistent arc through impact
@@nmaschas It's an absolute no-brainer in my opinion. He's already got huge grips, like Bryson, to reduce the hand-rotation-gearing-effect - which helps deliver a more consistent clubface. Not changing to a more stable shaft, at that swing speed, is just leaving accuracy on the table. There is also the issue when hitting off of grass where you can get almost one thousand rpms more spin - that's going to lead to massive consistency problems when it naturally fluctuates
Looked like a 6 iron, not a 7 iron. Please confirm. Also dynamic loft was around 16-17. No way it's that low if he's hitting a 34 degree 7 iron. Hitting down on it 7 degrees at 108 mph club speed with a 34 degree club would give you way more spin than 7000 especially with pro v1x. That was definitely a 6 iron.
I mean Drew Cooper uses them and swears by them and he plays on the course at 135-40… cool video but Drew did the test with Ian and it was eye popping how much better they suited his speed
Not all graphite shafts are created equal. DeChambeau uses graphite through the bag and he can knock the cowboy sh*t out of his sticks with great accuracy. In this guy's case, this particular shaft wasn't a good option. Doesn't mean there aren't others that would benefit him.
