Hey Tom, Do you ever just stop and think about the fact that nearly 100,000 people have pledged to be your digital friends? Although you are a great guitar player, I don't think that's why we all subscribe. I think we all wish we had a guitar playing friend that would invite us over to sit in their kitchen and talk about our mutual compulsion to play guitar. No BS, no sales pitch, just a friend talking about something we all love. Thank you for all these videos. I visit your kitchen every chance I get.
I remember when Tom started his channel during the lockdowns of covid, I was looking through you tube and saw this guy looking a little depressed due to covid out in his garage with a guitar, clicked on it and thought, who the hell is this guy....But I knew there was something different about Tom compared to the overly produced video's, then I started learning who Tom Bukovac is and his incredible contribution to the music world. Tom has created a community of really good hearted people and generally you discover there's a lot of us out there who have the same thoughts/idea's.....Great Job Tom on what you have created, you have made a legacy to be Very proud of....
You got to stop this "I'm old" shit! I played from 1966/67 until 2016 playing out til I had a stroke and still play every day and got not QUITE as many vintage ones as you BUT hearing you play, it's like we're brothers from different mothers or we went to different schools together EXCEPT I'm 15 years older than you. You're an inspiring YOUNGSTER who has that popular "just outta bed look" down pat. Thanks for doing all this stuff. We ALL appreciate it.
You and I are the same age. I started laughing out loud when you said "I was around before remote controls for TVs." I remind my kids of that all the time 😂
It's really sweet what you did with Dear Mr Fantasy. There are so many great players, but I honestly don't think anyone is better than you, Tom. Also, none of the other greats let us hang out in the kitchen. Thank you very kindly.
Hey Tom, I went to a Jack white show last summer . He makes you lock up your cell phone in this little bag before entry. I loved it, all these people were now forced to interact with each other. It really made the show much better. Everyone was talking to each other and having fun. I wish every show was like that.
Same! The last Jack White show I went to, which was actually about one day after the Covid scare had calmed down barely, I loved that all cell phones were bagged!
That's a great idea. Slayer's farewell tour was sad, like five dudes desperately trying to get a pit going while a thousand people stood there holding up their cell phones.
Tom in this world full of anxiety and bad news and crappy youtube videos, I’m glad that every time I open youtube, your videos are on top to soothe my soul. It’s a refuge.
First thing, love that danelectro. And 2nd thing. Dear Mr. Fantasy… sweet 😎✌️ Enjoy the weekend my fellow disciples. Heading to Atlantic City. Tedeschi trucks band. Can’t wait.
Oh shyte Tom, I thought you might have gone in for some face work based on that thumbnail. LMAO I remember my parents loving Wayno when I was a kid. He had a super high pitched voice. I felt a massive headache every time they played that shyte. OMG, that thumbnail might cause me to start drinking again after 30 years of being sober. Damn you Uncle Larry. I miss mom and dad a lot, what I wouldn't give to listen to some Wayno with them just one more time. Cheers brother. Super great content lately man, thank you so much
Hey Tom, I hope you never quit your UA-cam channel. I so enjoy listening to your music. I especially enjoy your creativity in the way you work out your songs. Simply amazing! Sets my mood for a beautiful day!
A sure sign you're old is you start listening to opera after never liking it. My mother and aunt started listening to opera when they got old. So far I don't have a hankering to listen to opera, so I guess 74 isn't old enough.
Flames were licking out the service window and fingering their way towards the high stamped tin ceiling. I could see frantic movement in the kitchen but out in the dining room no one seemed to notice. A vaguely familiar skeleton at the bar in Vietnam era Class A's hoists a bottle of HiLife and nods in my direction while the jukebox careens into a double time version of Danke Schoen.
vanessa?? vanessa??...i kept hearing someone call....who the hell is vanessa? i calmly picked up my scotch and water and moved like a sloth towards the nearest exit sign. my heart was racing but i knew instinctively that if i showed any sign of fear whatsoever that NO ONE was getting out of here alive. even though i had walked down this hallway hundreds of times before, this was the first time i ever noticed how hideous the carpet was....a testament to decades of badly cleaned up vomit and wine spills. as i got closer to the stairwell i could still faintly hear that drunk asshole yelling his wife's name. he seemed so worried about her, even though she probably slept with every one of his friends at the company christmas parties.
I recently penned a tune named "Music City Bridge"...a line inspired by Tom..."I miss the sound of wood and steel, and a vocal crack that at times made ya feel.. all the sadness that writer was a feelin when he wrote those words..."
Dude! I just stumbled across this video and I’m hooked! You are a true talent!! Being the same age I can totally relate to you! Can’t wait to check out more!!🎸👍🏼
Hey, Tom, thanks for all you do and your willingness to share. The variety and expertise shown on the multitude of videos that you have posted is amazing! I do want to note that on some videos you actually look into the camera, but most of the time, you are looking at and speaking to the display. The look into the camera seems to speak more directly to me rather than a lecture given to an audience.
I fell in love with golden era Japanese guitars (78-81) when I was stationed there for 5 years and had unlimited access to them at the endlessly incredible thrift stores they have out there. Flipped most of them but kept a couple extremely killer units, including a Flying V built in 1980 that weighs nothing and plays like Greek Fire. They also had great names like my Tokai HARD PUNCHER bass.
I’ve found that those folks who question or criticize why some people prefer vintage guitars either have had little to no experience with them, or are envious and unable to purchase them themselves. Yes, tone is in the hands but there’s something going on with many of those old 50’s/60’s guitars that just doesn’t happen that often with the mass of guitars being produced today. If you want that extra 1% and can afford it, go for it! If that 1% doesn’t matter that much or you can’t afford it, buy and enjoy the best guitars you can. Life is short. Have fun!
So true about taste change as you get older. Never dug bursts generally but now have 3 two tone tobacco bursts, love them! Great episode Uncle, keep ‘em coming ❤
Remotes! I'll tell you about remotes. In 70's Australia I lived in a big city, but it had only two TV stations. Colour TV only came in 1975. My father bought a Healing immediately for exactly for $1000. He could've bought a nice used car. Still two stations and no remote. And I was still using the red public telephone box across the road with the stinky black Bakelite phone covered in girl germs. Dad then got a massive antenna put on the roof so we could get the three Sydney stations. Still no remote. One night on Nighmoves I discovered Hendrix when they played his Monterey gig which remains my most thrilling music moment. We moved house in 1980. No remote until the mid 80's.
Hey man, I just got here, I been a fan of everything I seen outta you, Otis Watkins, Rick Beato, The TPS fellas, but just found your channel. For starters, I'm surprised you're my age, had you pegged a good decade younger, so well done, lol. Secondly, you seem like a cool af human bean, not just a very accurate and tasty player, so I'm glad I came across you. Finally, I really dig how you turn everybody who don't know on to so many killer old bands, you started playing Argent in the last one, I was like "fuck yeah". If you haven't already, be sure and turn em on to Humble Pie. Thanks, Uncle Larry.
I saw Dylan in Milwaukee a few months ago. No cell phones allowed. You had to put your phone in a sealed bag and got it unlocked by security when you left. It was actually refreshing.
Here's a real shocker for all the anti-Autotune/ pitch correction folks. They figured out how to "bump" the tape as early as the 1950s. It was large sections, but they could make a line go sharp or flat by bumping the tape. They did this until around 1975, when the Eventide harmonizer came out, and they would run the vocals through that and move the pitch of the vocals. Studio tricks have been around forever. I hate when people start yelling and typing the word "Autotune" when they really know nothing about what it is or actually does. Rant over. Thanks for the videos as always Tom! ❤
I was in a studio (I'm old) in Dallas in the late 70's and they had an Eventide Harmonizer. It was slow, but we got the lead vocalist up that half step he could only do on his best day. I also heard tales of people dropping a track on a 1/4 inch and and speeding it up to correct a note. Can't recall when I heard that. Goes way back I'm thinking. The heresy!
Some of those Fujigen Squiers from 1985ish were just so sweet. I used to go to the only Long & McQuade in the US and play it over and over until they were asking me to just buy it already. They had the big headstocks and rosewood boards. The parent company figured out pretty quickly that they were better than their core line. Just way more consistent as well.
Tom, you’re honest, and you are so spot on in your opinions of modern technology in recording. I would put huge money on the fact that the Stones used every available technology to make their latest recording sound perfect. And as a result, we all win as fans.
Another exceptional Homeskoolin’, today with a Danelectro and playing Dear Mr. Fantasy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on guitars, recording and music. Best way to start the day.
Uncle Larry I don’t know about click bait on your channel but I absolutely love your “lick bait” when your fingers are coming up with new and old licks and ideas. Thanks for all of it !
Your Jams at the beginning are priceless to me Bud! Breaking out some Winwood. 👍👍👍👍👍....I had to edit this because I'm about 11 beers in.....Damnit this is amazing!!!!!!!!
I was the TV remote control when I was a kid. My mom would tell me to bring her the TV Guide, turn the TV on, change the channel, adjust the volume, move the antennae, shut it off. Them were the days.
Just in time just finished up a new record! Bouncing everything out now! Derek Hann first original album comes out tonight at midnight on all platforms kids! 🎉❤
Those 80/90s Fender Japan guitars, yeah, wish I still had mine! I had a Jerry Donahue Tele with Joe Barden pickups back in the day and a 50s reissue Strat, of course I sold them to move onto something 'better', doh!! Wish I still had them now, the Strat in particular, that is the best Strat I have ever had, nothing has come close to it. Keep up the good work!
the gear analogy reminds me of a conversation in high school. I was complaining my gear was cheap and sounded like crap. My friend said, "do you really think it's the gear? Nothing to do with you?" And then in a moment of humility I admitted, "I'm sure if Steve Morse had this setup, he would still totally shred."
Hey that riff at 6:20 triggered something in my brain from the murky past. It was a pop song on heavy rotation, briefly, when I was a kid. I had to find it. Edison Lighthouse 'Love Grows'. You're right about its iconic potential. I haven't heard that song in fifty years and what I remember is the riff.
I had (maybe still have?) a Wayne Newton guitar pick. I tuned his guitar many years ago (I think its was an Ovation?) at private date he was playing, and I was the rental backline tech. His PM gave me the pick as a way of saying thanks. I'll have to look for it now.
Just love that Traffic took the studio boys from Muscle Shoals on the road with them …now that’s appreciation! Wish I could have seen that! Keep up the tasty jams from the archives… maybe Bill Murray will join you someday for lounge versions of such classics as Mr Fantasy
It was drummer Roger Hawkins and bassist David Hood who toured with Traffic. I met David in a restaurant across from Lincoln Center here in NYC when he played with Steve Cropper.
Hi Tom! Follow you often and have learned a lot . Thank you. Found you through an Otis Gibbs podcast. I grew up on the West Side of Cleveland so your hometown references make me smile. Always wondered what you thought about Danelectro guitars so I was surprised to see you holding one in this video. I have a Danelectro convertible style and she sounds good to me. I’m a beginner student but have been passionate about guitars for decades. If you ever feel like talking more about the Danelectro I’d love to hear your thoughts. Also anything about early 60’s Hagstroms you care to talk about? Thanks for the great content you put out there - it is excellent and valuable!
perspective and damage control, aka pitch correction. almost everything needs repair. analog man 72 yrs old. that is why your sedan, suv or p/up truck is keeping you happy more or less than in previous decades. it was pitch controlled when it was made. thank you little tommy for your time on the clock for the " homeskoolin" community.
It’s true about tone being in the hands, but here’s the thing that speaks to the gear. Most great players played through different gear with varying results. Townsend SG/Hiwatt, Clapton Les Paul Marshall. I’ve seen great players and thought. I liked when that dude played a different gear.
My parents gave me a spankin' new 74 hardtail strat on my 12th birthday. Middle pickup quit so I put in a loaded pickguard with VanZant pickups in it sometime in the 90's. Love the Van Zant pickups. I know.... 70s strats are supposed to suck, but I still love mine.
Hey Tom, back in the mid 70's there were TVs with remote controllers. My uncle worked in a TV shop and had one. It would operate little motors in the TV that would mechanically change the volume and channel knobs. On channel 4? Push the button and whirrr... clunk, and now it's on channel 5. It blew my little 10 year old mind.
Yeah, remote control TVs go back to the '50s, like the Zenith Space Command sets that worked via ultrasonic tones; the remote was just a box with tuning forks and strikers inside of it (jingling keys and clinking silverware would also remotely operate these sets LOL).
Yes, it’s the pickups. IMHO, you want those unwaxed somewhat squeaky and microphonic pickups. When I listen to those early guitar heroes, I really think you can sense the feedback looming just beneath the surface like a caged monster wanting to break out.
I agree that most of the tone comes from one's fingers... but you forget to mention that in addition to adding %1, the way it FEELS inspires the player to play so much better and make different choices in the moment creating a positive feedback loop ... oh snap... you did just point that out :)!!! Rock on, Uncle Larry!
You're correct Tom; new Gibson's have Burstbuckers pickups in them (or 490s) I just put a set of good old Seymour Duncan 59 PAF's into my epiphone lp custom; that thing is DANGEROUS NOW!
Tom you talking about getting old is making me feel old at age 66 . Sometimes it's the miles we put on ourselves compounded with age . Hell your doing great .
@Young Thomas I have a '96 MIJ Strat - Shell Pink. I love it. My friend who has a couple of world Tours under his belt, gave it his seal of approval. I got a great deal on it from new. No one wanted a Pink Strat in 1996. They prolly didn't know that Jimi gave one to Billy waay back. 😉
Hey Tom looking back on your successful guitar journey- Any regrets. Anything you would have done different.

Awesome vid, Tom. I have an 83 Squier Japanese Strat. It is soooo loud acoustically.
Only a Clevelander would know who Wayne Newton’s brother in law was. Michael Stanley (RIP)
Or who is Jonah Koslen.
the gear analogy reminds me of a conversation in high school. I was complaining my gear was cheap and sounded like crap. My friend said, "do you really think it's the gear? Nothing to do with you?" And then in a moment of humility I admitted, "I'm sure if Steve Morse had this setup, he would still totally shred."
I have an 84 MIJ Strat, bought it for $250 in about 1989. Like you said it’s aged nicely, sounds great.
Ok… you got me with this one. Freaky good riffage
That jam was bad fu
The best part about phone videos in live concerts is the phone's AGC going crazy and the bass distorting everything.
Tom you should consider opening a radio tv format inviting all best guitar players on your platform on your studio time has come uncle Larry
Saw that in 1973....”Shootout at the Fantasy Factory” Philadelphia Spectrum
I don't know much about vintage guitars but this one sounds really beautiful
Sheesh sounds great. Look both ways kids, there’s Traffic. Heavy Traffic.
Very cool. I had the baritone version in the same color. Wish I still had it🤦🏾♂️
I had it in surf green but sold it because I didn’t use it much.
Have not heard mr fantasy in a long time. Thanks
I have one of those Danelectros - surprisingly fun to play a sound good even DI - the most sonic and underrated melamine out there! (killer opening!)
Some Traffic for us geezers, to think back fondly to sitting in smoke-filled college rooms listening to vinyl--thanks.
Tom you talking about getting old is making me feel old at age 66 . Sometimes it's the miles we put on ourselves compounded with age . Hell your doing great .
great hands.... great tone
omg vanzant pickups! haven't heard that forever. the sound of texas...
@Young Thomas
I have a '96 MIJ Strat - Shell Pink.
I love it.
My friend who has a couple of world Tours under his belt, gave it his seal of approval.
I got a great deal on it from new.
No one wanted a Pink Strat in 1996.
They prolly didn't know that Jimi gave one to Billy waay back. 😉
