You're right-thanks for the correction! Wells was in Europe in '37, so whoever made the trombone solo (Hunt or Minor), it SOUNDS, somewhat, like Wells' style.
Herschel and Lester ... in excellent solos! Nice to have a short excerpt ... trombone solo ... from Dickie Wells, also ... in the first part, and the last. I guess that the trumpet solos are from, either/both, Buck Clayton or Harry Edison. ... Well, Herschel was great, but Lester ... as usual, has the best solo, near the end of the fast-tempoed tune.
Thanks! ... Yeah, it sounds like Buck Clayton, in the opening (trumpet) solo, and Earle Warren has a very-NICE solo, also! I still think that Lester/Prez outshines the others, in certain ways, but it's IMHO! ... Also, have found, on ebay, an old jazz album, of duets ... with Clayton and Earl Hines.
For years I wonder'ed what Herschel Evens look'ed like and what kind of sax he played it looks like a King or Martin I know the Prez played a Conn till he died.as a sax player this matters only to me.
Wow, Herschel was a great talent
After he died Lester Young would pull up a chair next to him and place his hat on it every night, and that's where, in his mind, Herschel sat.

I love hearing a new Pres solo!
Man man man man.. so good. A good portion of pounding - almost techno - swing! Thanx!
Man...Lester was on point!!!!
Yes, Prez was the king of all in that period of time, fully agree with you.
& STILL IS
Maravilla y ecxelencia musical

Reading "Being Prez" biography. Nice to hear the recording mentioned!
Yes, you're fully right!
Thanks for the additional info JHB. Trumpet solo's seem to me from Buck Clayton, also Earl Warren has a short solo on alto.
love the trumpet and drums at 4.03

Turning the dial down "three decibels" wouldn't change all that much!

Herschel played the Conn New Wonder with an Otto Link Master Link mouthpiece. Prez' last horn was a Dolnet.
and the Freddy Green freight train driving it all behind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I doubt if it is Dickie Wells on trombone, he didn't join Basie until 1938. The trombones at this time would be George Hunt and Dan Minor.
Best sound quality I've heard so far of these broadcasts. What's this off of?
Subir Grewal Thanks :). It's ripped as mp3 from a CD with this beautiful live recording from 1937.
The photo of Lester at about 3:17 is reversed!
It is of course a variation on "Bugle Call Rag".
About three DB down? OK!
