I bought a used 2x12 combo on a lark because of the stupid low price. I am BLOWN away by this amp! So glad I took a chance on it. I've read about realiability issues but so far all is good on mine. I love it!
Yep, I bought the Alchemist head, and I am Guilty too. After bragging about my Mesas, and hundreds of other amps that I LOVE.I have to admit that this Alchemist brings me much more closer to the Allman Brothers,Skynryd Southern Rock tones then the Boogies did. The trick is to balance the main volume Out, and the Gain. Too much gain , and the tone gets muffled, The trick is to experiment with EQ, and volume as Elcodegrand below mentioned. It has a Pure organic, natural bloom with great harmonics when turning the volume up. I run the head through either one Mesa Rectifier 4 x 12 cab at 8 OHMS, or 2 Mesa Rectifier 4 x 12s at 4 OHMs. The amp kicks ass, and you just need to tweak away to find the tone you need. Its in there. The Amp can get into Metallic territory with a little help such as a Boss O/D , or other hot box in front. Its all about balance though. Never played it in a live situation yet, so I do not know if it will get buried in a loud band mix. Thats where the Mesa Boogies shine though.
I played this amp in Best Buy, spent about an hour with it and I can tell you it sounds best with ACTIVE pickups. I think that is partly because of the speakers it come loaded with. if you were to change them out for V30's it wouldn't sound as dead on the gain channel as far as eq is concerned. But if you're gonna play with this amp, use a guitar with EMG's or Duncan blackouts, I would recommend Duncans cause the note definition is better in my opinion. Overall, its a good amp though.
I just brought this amp home on friday and played out with it on Saturday and it is amazing!!!! It sounds better cranked. I only got it to about 11 o'clock on the dial in a pretty big bar. One thing you should know is that the effects loop is parallel. So if you rely on your pedals alot you can't use this effects loop. Make them sound horrible. I ended up putting all my effects in front of the amp. I like it to much to return it!
So, for anyone interested in going straight to tone town- I just got this amp and paired it in stereo with my Orange Rockerverb 50.. OMG. This 40 watt is louder, punchier and the onboard reverb and delay RULE.. With the spongy Orange, and the tight focused Bogner, I own this town and maybe the EARTH!!
This is a great amp.. I just bought one today! There are two things I am going to do to make it perfect.. swap out the original speakers with a Celestion Alnico Blue and a Vintage 30. The Greenback and the 70th Anniversary do not have enough sparkle and chime for my tastes.. the second thing I will do is replace all of the stock Chinese tubes with quality tubes. Don't let anyone tell you this amp is muddy sounding because it isn't.. It was the guitar he was using.. more accurately the pickups.
I've noticed most of the time when somebody says an amp "sounds like shit" or that it "sucks" that person had no idea how to operate or dial in the amp they're slagging (Harmony Central) After all the negative feedback on the Alchemist I can't wait for mine to arrive next week just to prove them wrong... Bogner doesn't make anything below excellent, only diff is these were assembled in China but ALL components are top-shelf per/Rheinhold Bogner himself so a test run is definitely in order.
Could any of you folks please tell what are the 4 chords Paul uses from about 3:36 to about 3:40? I'm pretty sure the 1st and 4th are C#m but the 2nd and 3rd cord sounds like it has some OPEN strings and for the life of me I can not figure out how he is getting that open sound. Thanks for any help.
Yeah, C#min with the high E string ringing open, then moving that shape to the 5th fret of the low E string keeping the top two strings open, this is an A add9 chord. The chord at 3:36 is a Bmajor add4, essentially just the 7th fret major barre chord with the hi E and B strings left open as well; this is a very common pop chord and famously heard in Coldplay's Yellow. He then returns to the C#min as you thought followed by an Emajor with a sus4 (that's when his pinky pops onto the 2nd string) using the moveable A form barre chord. He then moves to another 6th string barre chord at the 7th fret but this time it's a B7, use your major barre chord but keep your 4th finger up so you can hear the 7th fret of the D string, the pinky then hits the B string for a moment creating the sound of the 13, he moves this down to the 5th fret for A7 (A13) and resolving to the E which is the key that these chords are all from.
Pro Mixing no worries, only took a minute to put that together for ya. Sometimes we just have to be a force for good out here on the interwebs: ) hope you have fun with that sequence of chords!
@siannuccilli that's probably because most effects pedals are supposed to be inserted before the amp, things like delay and reverb or a noise suppressor can be inserted into the effects loop.
This amp can totally do metal.. I have one, and I primarilly play metal. I bought it specfically for the versatility, it will go from glassy cleans, to crunch to shreader death kill.
How about if one were to compare it with the Line 6 Spider Valve in which the tube circuitry was designed by Mr Bogner. Where do you think he got the onboards FX from?
Doubt this account is still active but the spider valve is a quality amp. I miss mine, traded it for a full sleeve tattoo. Might have to go find one of the heads one of these days.
Owned this amp for 10 minutes, I couldn't play at full volume since family was sleeping. The amp sounded really good but hum came out of no where and then the amp broke. Not a fuse not a tube it was in the circuitry. This amp does have those kinds of problems. Read reviews on musicians friend and you will see them. I received another amp from MF and that one lasted 2 days and then started a nasty hum. Traded it in for a BlackStar club 40. Best decision ever!
Very good review - I've watched a bunch of reviews on this amp - I have this amp - I've got one of those that some people complain about it sounding somewhat compressed - this one sounds more open - mine sounds better played with a strat - my Shecter with JB pup sounds too dull and compressed especially on clean channel - so still experimenting. Will be trying other guitars and pup's soon.
Well offhand I know of three people who have them. Rusty Cooley has one the Uberscall - but he he is now endorsed by Peavey I think. Brett Garsed has the Ecstacy and Mark Tremonti has one also not sure which model.
Hard to believe this head had an MSRP of over $1700 when it was first introduced...and now its selling for $499. DAMN!! If I hadn't just modded the shit outta my Jet City, I would pick one of these up.
Its a Charvel So-Cal Style 1 2H. The difference between this one and the San Dimas Style is that this one has DiMarzio pickups and a pickguard while the San Dimas has Seymor Duncans and no guard.
I disagree with what was said about this amp not doing metal.. throw an overdrive in front of this and its a raging beast of metal tones.. OCD fulltone or 808 works well..
+J.T. Malo i feel like people always say that an amp won't do metal because its super high gain. but on my 6505+ and mark v the gain is turned down a bunch and i just throw an ocd or deadhorse deluxe in front. makes them sound clearer and more brootz \m/ lol
... this guy is all right. I like his reviews and opinions. Good enough to get picture about instrument unlike most of bedroom reviews here on youtube :-) ...
agreed. even the japanese made charvels kick every us gibson quality wise. btw, do you know if the so-cal is discontinued? it doesnt show up on the charvel website.
The good thing about this guy is that if he went back in time to when they filmed "Back To The Future", and Michael J. Fox was too tired or sleepy to do the rock and roll scene near the end, he could fill in without anyone noticing and really look like he knew what he was doing on stage.
I love Bogner products! Question: How high hard can you push the amp? I had a Hughes & Kettner that was incredible sounding, but every time I raised the volume past 3 it started to crackle. It just couldn't handle the load past a certain point. It wasn't the load or the 2x10 speaker cabinet. Everything was connected properly and the correct ohm setting, etc. Does the Bogner head perform reliably at very high volumes, if you're using the correct speaker setup? Thanks!
What Hughes and Kettner did you have. I have had several and currently run the switchblade. I have no such issues with any of them. I have never had one of their solid state Amps but otherwise it was likely a defect
can anybody answer this question? Can you use the footswitch to switch between the gain modes on the channels? Also, If I put on reverb and delay on one channel... then switch off it. When I come back to the channel will it still be on? Or does switching the channel cancel it out?
Hi Paul..thks for the vid...i recenlty bought this amp, love it for sure! just wondering why was i getting a buzz/hum noise on either my clean or mercury channel...looking forward to some recommendations to reslove this issue
What do you think people need to play metal? The gain isn't very high on my Blackstar HT50 and I have a Bugera T5 Infinium that I love for the cleans and how easy it is to take anywhere. I just run a drive pedal through the Bugera when I'm doing metal and it's fine. This amp sounds awesome.
I would have to agree with you ripdime278 in that It really doesn't take much to beat the sound of a Gibson pickup.. to me most Gibson pickups have a mid hump which makes them sound almost muddy. The 57s, The T-Tops sound the best and a few of the newer Burst Buckers sound pretty good as they have removed that mid hump. Peace
@TheSupernaut92 Ohhhhh. Yeah. I forgot that Charvel doesn't just make one guitar model... I mean, they've produced a few since 1970, but... Let me be more specific. I was looking for the model type because it looked like something custom. Not very familiar with Charvel.
@hiian123 You`re missing the point. It has both excellent clean and gain channels (better than you can hear in this demo) with very good build quality at a decent price. the fender has just good cleans, the boogie both at three times the money.
I love Bogner, but there sound like they're underwater. It's got no mid punch and couldn't cut through a mix. Anyone know why these failed and got closed out so cheap?
Just bought one of these used for $ 350. Came with 7 Groove Tubes and Vintage 30 Celestion! Lots of tones here but to me the sound is a little processed for a tube amp. Almosed a compressed sound. But not in a bad way. Put togeather well but 60 lbs is kinda heavy! Agood beedroom amp! Has 40 & 20 watt switch also! You could swap out the 6L6's with 6V6's and lower the voltage even more! I'm glad l bought it, worth the money, even tho l didn't need anothet amp, what am l going to do with 10?🙄😕
i have a vox pedalboard going through this same set up on Gold channel with clean and bright voice settings and high treble (not too high) eq. throw some tube OD from the Vox and its a metal amp no doubt about it. either 20 hz or 40hz setting this amp puts out Drop A Slipknot and Korn like its a Mesa or Orange stack!! its even more versatile than this excellent video makes it
i'll keep my eyes open for a used one. the desolations are nice too, but they jsut dont have that hot rod feeling to them. since i already have a schecter they would be too similar. btw, coilsplit is awesome! i cant even imagine living without one anymore!
@whitepowa hi, well I've got the 1x12 combo and I play in a kind of Alternative Punk band. it sounds really great and metal sounds pretty good on it but you'll notice after a while that it isn't a metal amp because you'll kinda "run out of gain" for me and the music I play it sounds great! the effects are really nice too and the clean channel is very versatile. cheers
@markhm2 This is a REVIEW! People who are interested in an amp usually like to know all of it's capabilities and details before dishing hundreds of dollars for it. If you don't like Paul's review, there are plenty of amateur kids out there recording on shitty camcorder mics you might find interesting... +1 for Paul and Guitar World.
I love how people base an opinion of an amp on a video. Check out the video of Justin Derrico playing this amp where they actually miked the amp properly and then see what this thing can really do.
Gotta say- IDGAF what ANYONE says, this is basically the perfect gigging & touring amp w/ the built-in FX which aren't only BADASS but get rid of your need for a pedalboard unless you got specialized & highly specific needs for FX. But it's also an AWESOME tube amp. Crystalline clean to AC/DC Overdriven tones all the way to smoldering metal rhythm & lead tones through and through. You can disagree all day, but as far as my ears and other's ears who have complimented me on my tone say- this is all true.
Hi Ripdime278, No offense to you in any way but I have a sound engineer degree and trust me this amp is not a dull sounding amp..This is not a good representation of this amp. I think they would have done better to sell it with a Celestion Alnico Blue and a Vintage 30 as that speaker combo offers much more sparkle and chime and a much more refined sound.. so maybe it was the mic that muted it or his combined amp and guitar settings. Peace
Everyone should stop ragging on Paul - each of us has our own playing styles - one can't possibly cover what all this amp can do in just a few minutes. If anyone of you has a better review/video of this amp, please put it up. I have one of these now for maybe 3 years already - sits on my work bench - slowly I am dissecting the circuitry - it sounds compressed no matter what guitar, who plays through it, numerous tube swaps, etc. It just doesn't open up like I want it too - so far, I'm thinking the problem lies in the so-called tone stack - (speaking clean channel here) - probably gonna reconfigure to a typical BF tone stack - I don't like punchy sounding amps - I do like most all styles of music - not happy with this amp's tone - got no character IMO and there are others that don't like it as well. Maybe there are some circuit differences between different factory runs of this amp. Built like a tank, not the easiest to mod (typical of circuit board) but I'll get it how I want it eventually.
Listen starting at 8:20 The only reason anybody would be "ragging on Paul" is because they are miserably jealous. Some of the chops in between his speeches sound kinda sloppy but only the mediocre are always at their best.
@luteplayer2525 Mabey the one you bought was molested, mine came with JJ Electrnoics tunes in it and sounds amazing.. and I've been through alot of amps, this one has it all. You just have to dial it in.
You can. I worked for my school at the time's newspaper and someone used the name of a senator in a way that was unrelated to anything and they tried to sue.
@TheDregz He has the unfortunate knack of making the best equipment sound like a peavey bandit.. In fact hen makes just about everything sound like a peavey bandit.
@murfdog19 Maybe I shouldn't have called u out for "complaining" and pointed out that a lot of people do want to hear him talk and point out the features. And if u don't want to hear him talk u can fast forward the video.
That would be a much more apt comparison, but unfortunately, that was not the comparison that was originally made. I know where he go the effects from, and I know that Line 6 is the distributor and manufacturer.
No need to be sarcastic.. I haven't played a so-cal so I assumed it must be the guitar that was making this clip sound muddy/dull but since it's neither the amp nor the guitar then it has to be his settings on the amp and guitar.. or possibly the mic or way it was recorded. I own this amp and they are not muddy amps.. so if it's not the guitar then it's obviously his setting or recording/mic etc.. peace
He set the "high" gain channel at about 1o'clock on the gain. It's not much more gain than the clean channels highest gain. Why not turn the high gain all the way up before declaring it can't do Metal tones? I've heard other demo's of this amp with the gain dimed and it can get Metal gain and tones. Not as much as say a 5150, but it gets a lot more gain than what's shown here.
@jwood5150 because if you play guitar long enough, you should already know what bogner is. if he demoed an orange, i don't think he'd need to name the artists who use them either.
I bought a used 2x12 combo on a lark because of the stupid low price. I am BLOWN away by this amp! So glad I took a chance on it. I've read about realiability issues but so far all is good on mine. I love it!

Still have it?
@@bigwomp932oh yeah, great amp👍🏼
Could any of you folks please tell what are the 4 chords Paul uses from about 3:36 to about 3:40?

This amp is an amp that will stay with you forever!
one of the best high gain distortion amps ive ever tried
Different speaker(s) and this amp is amazing. Especially for leads.
Oh, and Line 6 is the exclusive distributor of the amp as well. Just look at the Line 6 website, you'll see it listed there
Love this amp! gonna buy the combo 112.Thanks for this test my friend, really good.Beautiful Charvel too!(goes to my favorites!)
How about if one were to compare it with the Line 6 Spider Valve in which the tube circuitry was designed by Mr Bogner.

... this guy is all right. I like his reviews and opinions. Good enough to get picture about instrument unlike most of bedroom reviews here on youtube :-) ...
@pinoyblues so are vox AC30's, egnaters, peaveys... etc..
Hey guys, should I get a bogner alchemist or an egnater tweaker. They both sound awesome! What do you think?
agreed. even the japanese made charvels kick every us gibson quality wise. btw, do you know if the so-cal is discontinued? it doesnt show up on the charvel website.
is it a good amp for playing metal? or it is better some of the blackstars?
The good thing about this guy is that if he went back in time to when they filmed "Back To The Future", and Michael J. Fox was too tired or sleepy to do the rock and roll scene near the end, he could fill in without anyone noticing and really look like he knew what he was doing on stage.

Would this be a big upgrade from my Marshall MS-2? And great review as usual Paul!
I regret getting rid of this amp, creamy, fantastic tone which was not exhibited in this video.
Any clue what would be a better buy? this or a new ENGL Fireball?
Hi Paul..thks for the vid...i recenlty bought this amp, love it for sure! just wondering why was i getting a buzz/hum noise on either my clean or mercury channel...looking forward to some recommendations to reslove this issue
love that first delayed bit u played
What do you think people need to play metal? The gain isn't very high on my Blackstar HT50 and I have a Bugera T5 Infinium that I love for the cleans and how easy it is to take anywhere. I just run a drive pedal through the Bugera when I'm doing metal and it's fine. This amp sounds awesome.
I would have to agree with you ripdime278 in that It really doesn't take much to beat the sound of a Gibson pickup.. to me most Gibson pickups have a mid hump which makes them sound almost muddy. @TheSupernaut92 Ohhhhh. Yeah. I forgot that Charvel doesn't just make one guitar model... I mean, they've produced a few since 1970, but...
Let me be more specific. I was looking for the model type because it looked like something custom. Not very familiar with Charvel.
Definitely Charvel from the neck logo. Looks like a more modern version of the old model 5 I used to use in the 80's.
@hiian123 You`re missing the point. It has both excellent clean and gain channels (better than you can hear in this demo) with very good build quality at a decent price. the fender has just good cleans, the boogie both at three times the money.
@stevestizzy It's the pickups in the guitar I think.
@chromecity727 thanks,, are they high caliber guitars
@smeadows26 really depends on what kind of tone your looking for. Mabey I'll make a vid later and post it up.
I love Bogner, but there sound like they're underwater. It's got no mid punch and couldn't cut through a mix. Anyone know why these failed and got closed out so cheap?
what is the guitar paul is using here
@cerebrix O.o goodness...I didn't know that. haha, are they at least worth the price?
What about Bugera?
Just bought one of these used for $ 350. Came with 7 Groove Tubes and Vintage 30 Celestion! Lots of tones here but to me the sound is a little processed for a tube amp. Almosed a compressed sound. But not in a bad way. Put togeather well but 60 lbs is kinda heavy! Agood beedroom amp! Has 40 & 20 watt switch also! You could swap out the 6L6's with 6V6's and lower the voltage even more! I'm glad l bought it, worth the money, even tho l didn't need anothet amp, what am l going to do with 10?🙄😕
Designed by Bogner, FX courtesy of Line6, made by Line 6.
I don't understand what you are saying?
good for grunge,punk,modern rock,etc.?
Probably the best clean tone I have heard in a looong time.
i have a vox pedalboard going through this same set up on Gold channel with clean and bright voice settings and high treble (not too high) eq. throw some tube OD from the Vox and its a metal amp no doubt about it. either 20 hz or 40hz setting this amp puts out Drop A Slipknot and Korn like its a Mesa or Orange stack!! its even more versatile than this excellent video makes it
i'll keep my eyes open for a used one. the desolations are nice too, but they jsut dont have that hot rod feeling to them. since i already have a schecter they would be too similar. btw, coilsplit is awesome! i cant even imagine living without one anymore!
Anyone know if the 2x12 combo & the piggyback ( head & cab) have the same guts & tone? Thanks.
This is what he should be reviewing, I hate when this guy reviews metal shit, because that's not his style, but for this kind of thing, he's perfect.
what guitar is paul using?
Cool playing !
@ondaocho Doesn't have anything to do with the fact that a video isn't going to show an amps true sound does it?
@Sean2592 it's a charvel so-cal
Paul, what kind of guitar is that?
I wish I would have bought this before I bought the Mardhall Ma100H! The clean channel on the ma is all I use with pedals.
Zach Myers from Shinedown uses an Alchemist head in his live rig.
@whitepowa hi, well I've got the 1x12 combo and I play in a kind of Alternative Punk band. it sounds really great and metal sounds pretty good on it but you'll notice after a while that it isn't a metal amp because you'll kinda "run out of gain" for me and the music I play it sounds great! the effects are really nice too and the clean channel is very versatile. cheers
Paul, you are amazing.
IMO , This is a great amp, I have one & it sounds beautiful with either a Strat or Les Paul.
Sounds great!
Hi Ripdime278,
No offense to you in any way but I have a sound engineer degree and trust me this amp is not a dull sounding amp..This is not a good representation of this amp. I think they would have done better to sell it with a Celestion Alnico Blue and a Vintage 30 as that speaker combo offers much more sparkle and chime and a much more refined sound.. so maybe it was the mic that muted it or his combined amp and guitar settings. Peace
it depends on who's hands the guitar is in to determine the tone coming out of the amp.
great sounding amp!!
What guitar is that?
Thanks for the review
Some of the chops in between his speeches sound kinda sloppy but only the mediocre are always at their best.
i dont think it sounds muddy i think it sounds smooth. alot of amps get really bitty and sharp. it seems very warm to me :)
@gtnick314
wait huh?
it is a black socal ?
Where?
@luteplayer2525
Mabey the one you bought was molested, mine came with JJ Electrnoics tunes in it and sounds amazing.. and I've been through alot of amps, this one has it all. You just have to dial it in.
You can. I worked for my school at the time's newspaper and someone used the name of a senator in a way that was unrelated to anything and they tried to sue.
I would like to hear a better guitar like the PRS Mira or something. I really want this amp
@TheDregz He has the unfortunate knack of making the best equipment sound like a peavey bandit.. In fact hen makes just about everything sound like a peavey bandit.
wow that actually sounds nice
You are crazy, this amp is great for metal. This amp kicks ass hard body
sounds alot like bonamassa! real cool for the price its hard to beat i will get one!!!!!!
I own this amp and they are not muddy amps.. so if it's not the guitar then it's obviously his setting or recording/mic etc.. peace
i would buy this one, is more versatile... and of course you can play metal!
i already test one...
great sound!
i like the amps but is it just me, or does it sound really muddy?
@kvncldrn its the cheapest bogner (chinese made) money can buy. most cost upwards of 3 grand for a 1x12 combo
I like the Bonger amps But this amp is tp flat to me. had checked it out but it just does not work for me
Designed by Reinhold Bogner...nuff said!
@jwood5150 Jerry Cantrell does
have you ever bought an amp before? more watts does not mean more expensive
darn i was thinking of getting one for myself
