I find that one of those small gas torches that fit on the small dispoable butane cylinders is a useful way to first light the firelighters and second to start the fire.
I have recently seen on UA-cam, someone making firelighters, using cotton balls and Vaseline/petroleum jelly. I personally use the Samba Fire Wool. Great comparison Video.
I actually tested this before shooting this video. A mate of mine had heard this as well. I couldnt get a good long burn out of it. I may have to try it again.

hi mate i grab the big bits of charcol put them in a container with a little diesel you just tip out a few they go good cheap
