  • I found this on the BBC Archive Facebook and I thought I would upload it here! I'm not quite sure what year this is from but I'd guess like 1982ish. Correct me if I'm wrong.
    Note: I DO NOT OWN ANYTHING USED IN THIS VIDEO.

    On Broadway solo is stunning. Numan was lucky to have him.

    His soloing on "Mr. X" (Ultravox) still sends the shivers. Great, great musician and artist.

    I still remember my parent's strict diet of 1960's sounds, and my sister sitting watching TOTPs. I had no real interest in music until my friend, Steven Louth, passed me an Ultravox cassette one day as we waited for the school bus. That was that.

    I loved electronic music as a kid and looked forward to where it was going. Now I turn on commercial radio in the car and warm diahorrea pours out

    Still it sounds easy. It was way more complicated back in the day programming those synths and sequensers than it is today.

  • @johngoodsell6641
    @johngoodsell6641 3 роки тому +6

    I'd guess 1981, as he mentions controlling the sequencing of the synths by VOLTAGE rather than MIDI. The foundations of MIDI were first published in 1981 & first MIDI instruments appeared in 82 ( I think ? )

    • @GNeuman
      @GNeuman 3 роки тому +3

      Midi came out in 1983

    • @iirachelmadness8677
      @iirachelmadness8677  3 роки тому +3

      I said 1982 based on the fact that Billy talks about making new music and writing. So I think this is early 82 Ultravox were writing Quartet. Also that would explain him talking about voltage control. Since it was early 82 and not 83 when the MIDI came out.

    • @fjfrancois

      Yes, I had a Sequential circuits P600 from around 1982-83 and it had midi already 😋

    I didn't know that Billy used a Roland MC-8 (made famous by Hans Zimmer, I think) Microcomposer. Well, it's on the video. I wonder what it was used on? An enormous pain to sequence, apparently.

    The good old days of analog. Program the computers for the sounds when playing the synthesizers. Now days it is digital and just program the sounds and and let it play it self.

    Great find. Amazing to see this. 🙏 What year is this? I want to say it’s late ‘70s, but it has to be ‘80s? During the Foxx era, although drum machines were used by Warren, Billy wouldn’t have been using computers, would he?

    It's funny how he sounds like he's talking gobbledygook but I get what he's saying about the programmer. I don't know which computer they were using but I'm guessing he had a programmer writing code (possibly in BASIC) to output the sequence via a CV interface. Electronics and personal computing were the Wild West back then. I made my own MIDI Thru box and switcher (and still use them). It's nice that hardware electronics has bounced-back as a hobby.

    I always thought that Billy Currie would have been better in Tangerine Dream. Higher level of music. His solo work was very nice. In ultravox, those melodies were way too basic for my taste.
