The reasoning behind moving the USB 3 port to the front is due to the board layout, for USB3, it signals at 2.4GHz, so simply connecting a USB 3 device can significantly increase the noise floor on the 2.4GHz WiFi radio. The solution to this, is to move to as far as possible from the WiFi radios, and then if possible use guard traces around the data pins as well as separating the grounds (optional), and keeping the data pins in between 2 ground layers.
Calvin C The entire signal path must be shielded , and that includes the USB cable. the issue is that they tend to not be shielded very well, for example here is a study that intel did on this issue. www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/universal-serial-bus/usb3-frequency-interference-paper.html Rather than contend with this, some companies just take the simpler approach and move it away from the wifi radio.
king killa the N66u is an older model with speeds of less than 250mbit/s real world performance, it does not come close to the router in the video, and that link is likely just a referrer link so that the user can get paid from the cookie that it leaves.
Just got this router about a week ago and it is a BEAST!! I had bought the 68U and had it for a week and then saw the price drop on the 87U to $180 on Amazon (only $10 more than the 68U), so I jumped at it. However, I will admit that performance-wise, with a couple of AC clients doing run-of-the-mill stuff, there is not a huge jump but the multitasking ability is insanely better. Where I was able to stress test the 67U and get it to a point where activity from multiple hosts was beginning to bottleneck, the 87U just pushes right through it!! One thing I will mention though is heat, the 87U does heat up considerably more than the 68U, does. To increase airflow and dissipate heat, I actually used the black cardboard that the 87U was boxed in and if you bend it a little it makes the most perfect mount stand to keep the air moving
+Massive Loop Thank for the info! This is definitely on my short list when I redo my parents' house this Christmas. Do you know if the status lights can be turned off, like they can on the 68U?
Yes, the LEDs on the front can be toggled off. Also, they must have done a design change since this video was released because I can see all the lights just fine from practically all angles in the front, top , and sides angled.
Great review, thanks. I bought one thanks to cnet. You probably know by now that the usb3 port is on the front so it does not cause inference with the antennae. I also like the lights not being in your face. This router is way ahead of the rest :)
I dont like the speed of it. Its always getting hanged when playing games. But i think there is a way to configer it, i had bad experience when service provider they play with settings so u will ask for more mbps
Kai Bavelaar Just connect your existing modem to it as it does not have one (nor does it need one). To do this turn off your wifi if you have an existing modem/router via the firmware. Then connect a cat5 cable from one of the Ethernet ports to the Gigabit WAN port on the ASUS, fire up the ASUS firmware and it will pick up an ip conflict between your existing modem router and ask you if you want to switch to a new subnet. For example, if your existing modem router has the 192.168.1.x range then the Asus will reconfigure itself to the 192.168.2.x range. Simple :)
This guy is Hilarious! Nice Review! ...Not sure if its worth upgrading my Asus AC1900 though that one works great too with tons of connections in use @ the same time.
+Hypah US To add onto what Michael mentioned, the high speeds on this router are best realized in the form of multitasking on your internal network, like; moving large files between computer and NAS, streaming UHD or HD content locally and over internet, and doing these tasks at the same time.
Aaron Torres I used to have ASUS RT-N66 and I liked it so much, I needed a wifi range extender and I knew my own router can be used as a range extender, so I decided to get a new one. I went to bestbuy and the Asus 2400 was for $270 compared to x6 for $300. I decided that the more expensive one should be better. Even my 2 years old Asus Rt-n66 performed better (in range and speed test) than the x6. I replaced it with this ac2400 and now I am really satisfied.
His review is completely biased. Definitely paid off by Asus to give the review considering that this router gets at best 3.5 starts on both Amazon and Newegg customer reviews. The Netgear R7500 actually outperforms the Asus AC87U in the latest benchmarks. Netgear fixed a lot of issues with this router with the latest firmware update released just this week. If you buy this router, don't be surprised when you find out you have been duped.
I have the netger r7500 sitting here in its packaging. I cant decide on if i should return it and use the powerline wifi or just bite the bullet and use the R7500.
+michor10 does not support 4x4 under professional testing. Still buggy firmware after a year. Quantenna is not supporting this router any longer. the AC88U has replaced it. Using the wave 2 AC Broadcom radios which is fully supported with 4x4 coming out soon.
Dong Ngo, you know how to end a video.
This...
The Dong is boss...

How about a lead shield covering the usb3 controller?

Dong NGO is so smooth, I wish I was as cool as him.

Hey cnet, will you upgrade to 1080p ever?
Yes I agree, but does looking like the bat mobile make it faster? ?
If you make a guest network in your 87u, can you limit the upload and download speeds as well?
Got any reviews coming up of routers that stand vertical I got space concerns?

Unable to log in username: admin / password: admin . Is it possible to log in wifi or i have to connect the wire?
can you use this with your normal computer and do you have to install things or just plug it in and it runs?

Does looking like a batmobile, increase speed aswell?
This or the netgear nighthawk for gaming and multiple wifi usage. I own an xbox one and use it for netflix and intense gaming. Please help!
this will work better as long as u turn on the adaptive QoS.. if u find this too expensive, i recommend u d-link dgl-5500 with streamboost
I just got the r8000 from Netgear. still in box not open just got it yesterday. what should i do. >>>>>>>>???????? OMG
I don't want it if it doesn't put out enough frequencies to melt my brain.
can he bound 2 links?
Wait so does this router support all Internet bands? What if I bought it and my internet doesn't support it?
WorldSlayer It will support the older wifi cards, and make them run to their max.
This guy is Hilarious! Nice Review! ...Not sure if its worth upgrading my Asus AC1900 though that one works great too with tons of connections in use @ the same time.
1 solution about the LED lights on the bottom: just place a mirror, it's that easy.
You know what. I'm jealous.
SUS RT-AC87R Wireless-AC2400 Dual Band Gigabit
I want one
Nice greasy finger prints on the close up!
It was a birthday present for my dad for 250
I'm totally not even Jelly Bro!
I have around 40 down 3 up and 20 ping if I buy this will it lower my ping? What will it do to my up and down speeds?
+Hypah US find your isp limit by plugging a pc into ethernet, test it from there, that will be your maximum speed you will ever get
+Hypah US To add onto what Michael mentioned, the high speeds on this router are best realized in the form of multitasking on your internal network, like; moving large files between computer and NAS, streaming UHD or HD content locally and over internet, and doing these tasks at the same time.
Nah your ping really just depends on your ISP.
And I just got my AC68U...
Kidsnd274 you should've bought two because you're Kidsnd274 ...
Can I restrict bandwidth to other connected client?
Yes
You can also see what others are watching and surfing lol, trust me don't... I saw stuff... xD
Give me one!!! Why?! Because ur Dong Ngo! Lol
Why would anyone need 2 dual-WAN routers? Unless he has 4 broadband services...
If CNET loses this guy I think I'm going to have to unsubscribe
I have this 1 , big wow hahaha no lag free lag super wifi 5fgz super wifi boost man
I love how some people will buy this to simply power a 25 Mbps Internet line. Lol.
I would use it to copy files locally
File sharing would be a valid reason
Please recommend a option

Is the r8000 bettet
No. I bought the r8000 and returned it 1 week later and got this. This one is far better and it is also cheaper!
Ali Hamodi
Really. Why did you return the r8000
Aaron Torres I used to have ASUS RT-N66 and I liked it so much, I needed a wifi range extender and I knew my own router can be used as a range extender, so I decided to get a new one. The router is from Jesus?

This router is the biggest piece of shit there is. The RT-AC88U has replaced this hunk of junk.
+JayzBeerz Care to elaborate, professor?
+michor10 does not support 4x4 under professional testing. Still buggy firmware after a year. Quantenna is not supporting this router any longer. the AC88U has replaced it. Using the wave 2 AC Broadcom radios which is fully supported with 4x4 coming out soon.
+JayzBeerz Damn. That's bad news. I just bought this router for 200 Euros, ffs. :( I guess I'll be returning it then. Thank for the tip, Jay.
michor10 Hey man don't feel bad just return it or trade it in.
