  • Atorod Azizinamini, director of the Moss School of Construction, Infrastructure and Sustainability in the FIU College of Engineering and Computing, visited the site of the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium complex in Surfside, Florida. Azizinamini discussed an engineer’s report from 2018, recently shared with the public, that warned of “major structural damage” to concrete foundations as well as “abundant” cracks in the parking garage structure.

What is being neglected is the fact that the collection of water under the pool and the faulty waterproofing that Mr Azizinamini first mentions were known when the building was first certified, forty years ago. This was not known only since 2018 when the engineer's report was made. That report tells us that this was a design and construction fault. The question begs to be answered: why was this 40 year old information not acted on 40 years ago? No one in the media has raised the matter? No other commenters or experts have either.

    • @jbug13158

No one needs to comment or bring it up in the news. Attorneys are already collecting all the information they can and THEY'RE the ones that will make the biggest impact FOR THE PEOPLE, victims of the collapse and people who have bought those apartments too. THEN legislation will take place to make sure this doesn't happen again, not before the lawsuits are filed though.

PS No one makes a point to say that ALL of those building are on what USED to be wetlands. Filling swamps and wetlands to build neighborhoods and cities on is just a stupid idea, but much of the coastal "developments" in FL are exactly that. Water tables rise and fall, when they do soil erosion BENEATH the structures occur. The "fill" doesn't stay permanently.

It came out recently that in 2018 a report was given to management by an inspector that there were serious problems. It's not a steel infrastructure building, it's concrete reinforced with steel re-bar. There were columns in the garage under the actual apartment building where concrete had broken off exposing internal steel. There were cracks in floors and walls, when steel rusts, it actually expands, that extends the crack and lets in more water, the cracks extend exponentially.
There was earlier repair work done that was NOT done properly and
Management was still jerking around regarding hiring a contractor to deal with what came out in 2018 when this disaster happened.

There is a UA-cam video showing a 3D computer modeling based on the video of the collapse showing step by step how the structure behaved during the fall and as an architect what they show is the key to solve this matter. You can see the upper slabs falling like pancakes but the columns that were supposed to hold them still stand for a couple of seconds what this means is that the slabs were poorly attached to the top of each column also you can see a 3 column section corresponding to 3 floors still attached to each other on the debris. Add the salt water in the parking lot to this columns weakening them and there you have it!

"note that two witnesses appear to be saying that the "pool deck" failed first, by perhaps a minute or more. To me, the pool deck is the expanse between the pool and the building. Photos show it surely did drop, by one level, I think.
I propose that by having that floor drop, there was then, for the soon to fall building(s), nothing to keep the intersection of their columns at that same level from moving towards the south (towards the pool deck location). I am assuming a solid sheet of concrete across the whole expanse, and I believe it likely there was a garage under the whole thing. The building could stand until some perturbation caused the sideways movement of those points on the columns, and they fell."

Prior to the building falling there was gushing waterfalls pouring into the parking garage from the pool above and I believe some sort of soil erosion/liquefaction occurred in the process therefore compromising the ground below and the already dilapidated columns. Because they didn't want to rip up some traffic bollards then moved the boggies inside/ in stepped from their intended position, while swinging the bridge into place. This meant the ends of the 950 ton bridge were over hanging so they jacked up the post tension bars on the concrete truss to compensate, leading to stretching of the steel there and ultimately failure latter on.
But the board that looked into the disaster found that the bridge was only 90% of the required strength - when for safety it should have been hundreds of percent.

Its funny because this building and all of its design flaws was planned and drawn up during Jimmy Carters presidency. Florida also voted blue, and had a democrat governor when this was built. Pretty much all democrats. But I guess grasp at any straw to make the republicans look like the boogeyman, thats what the TV tells you, right?

It’s interesting that when this kind of thing happens everyone becomes an expert in the comments, why don’t you all shut it and let the structural engineers find the actual facts based on evidence and investigation, structural catastrophic failures are complex problems and rarely caused by just one factor

It’s now our job to find out why this happened and do the things he mentioned. And maybe it prevents another buildings collapse where thousands would have died. This is how we honor those who died. Make sure their deaths are not in vain.

If those living or renting old beach side building have to assume the repair costs at today's prices they will have to really love it for not dumping it as fast as possible into the market, which is probably what has happened for the last 40 years, and which is what loose monetary policy has promoted. You want to blame someone, blame the FED, same issues are widespread all over US today
