Great study, Dr. Bagwell! We are seeing what Paul has to say about the 2nd coming of the Lord. The Christians there in Thessalonia who had been taught to look for Jesus every day. He didn't come right away, and some time had passed. Their loved ones begin to die. They wander if their loved ones will be able to participate when the Lord comes again. Their bodies are dead in verse 14, however their souls & spirits are with the Lord. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. The beggar was taken immediately into paradise in Luke 16. When Jesus returns, he brings with Him the souls and spirits of these dead believers. Their bodies, spirits and souls will be reunited. Paul makes it clear in verse 15 that these are not his thoughts, they are the Word of God. "Prevent" means not to go in advance or ahead of. Their bodies will be transformed into eternal bodies like Jesus has. They actually take priority in the rapture. They come up out of the graves first. Paul is very elaborate in his answer to those who have questioned what will happen to their dead loved ones. Paul did not get impatient with them. There was no rebuke. They had the question, and Paul took time to answer the question. That is a good mark of a good pastor. See James 1:5. The Lord is longsuffering with our problems as well. A good pastor is a giver of his time, knowledge, love, prayers etc. God will never upbraid you or get onto you when you ask for more wisdom about the things of God. Paul is being like his Lord and is answering their question in detail. "Say"/λέγω/legō/to say with thought behind it. "Word"/λόγος/logos. "Lord"/κύριος/kurios. We believe in the verbal inspiration of Scripture, every word. See Jer. 1:13 & Jonah 3:1. "Lord" is the equivalent of Jesus. Jesus is Lord. This might be something that Jesus has said. Jesus said something about the rapture. See John 14. Jesus said He would go away and that He would receive us unto Himself. It could also be that this is something that Jesus said that was not recorded in the Word of God. See John 21:25. See Acts 20:35. Paul said to remember the words of the Lord Jesus that, "it is more blessed to give than to receive". This is not recorded in the Gospels, but Paul confirms that Jesus said it. See Acts 16:6. The Lord spoke by Paul the Word of the Lord. The Holy Ghost showed up and said, "No, don't go east". God sent them west instead. See Acts 18:9-10. The Word of the Lord came straight to the Apostle Paul. The Lord spoke to him by night in a vision. "We" is emphatic. Paul longs for himself to be alive when Jesus comes again. Who doesn't? See 2 Tim. 4:8. We should love the appearing of Jesus. "Alive"/ζάω/zaō. "Coming"/παρουσία/parousia. See Phil. 1:23-24. Paul says he is going to loosen his ship on one side of the river and tie up on the other side after crossing. Death is merely a boat ride to glory in the eyes of the Apostle Paul. See Titus 2:11-13. Paul was still looking for that blessed hope. "Prevent" means to go in front of or ahead of. Those that are alive will not go ahead of those who are asleep. The dead in Christ shall rise first. Paul was not ashamed of the doctrine of the resurrection of the body. Paul's word for resurrection means to stand up. Those that are in the graves will be brought up out of their graves. See Acts 17:18-20. Paul is in Athens, the home of worldly wisdom and philosophy. Paul is preaching on Mar's Hill. The Greek philosophers called Paul a "babbler" for preaching the resurrection. The Greek system of knowledge did not want a resurrection from the dead. See Acts 17:32. They mocked and made fun of the Apostle Paul. However, some of them clave unto Paul. One of the members of their supreme court got saved. Charles Ryrie said, "In verse 13-14 we have a preview, in verse 15 we have a promise and then in verses 16-18 we have a picture of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ". There are no signs left for the rapture of the church. It could happen at any time. Phenomenal study today, Dr. Bagwell! Thank you for the time you put into these wonderful studies.

These Thessalonians could be assured by the word of the Lord that their loved ones would precede them in the rapture. If God says it, it is true!
