12 years ago my example of a godly woman passed away. My precious grandmother. She had gospel music and preaching going on the radio everyday. God gave me a goodly heritage. He protected me from the world through her testimony and teachings as well as others in my family. I think this is why I have always loved church. I could have been born in any family. I’m thankful God put me in a family that supports preaching!
Amen, Preacher. May I walk 🚶♂️ in sweet communion with The Holy Ghost of God....For He is the heartbeat of God. And the preaching of The Word of God is my sustainance in a dry land. Thank you!!! Preacher for the preaching and teaching of The Word of God....Keep up your labour of love brother. Love you 💐 Preacher.
Good morning Preacher, enjoying your lesson this morning brought me great comfort and peace. The Holy Spirit is at my right hand I shall not be moved, therefore my heart is glad, my spirit rejoices, and my soul rests in hope! He is my very best friend! God be with you today and give you rest and peace! Soon you will be on the road again and I pray for you as you go preaching the Word of God! 🙏❤️🙏
Watched and enjoyed. Great class! Christmas is the perfect time to go through these “commands of Paul.” For if we do these we honor the living Word…our Lord Jesus, whom we honor. Amen, Bro. Mike.
Excellent study, Dr. Bagwell! There are dozens of commands from the Apostle Paul as he gave us the books of the New Testament. Both of these commands in today's study are negative. The next study it will go positive. Blessed are the balanced. We must learn the things not to do and the things we need to do as Christians. "Spirit"/πνεῦμα/pneuma/a movement of air, a puff of air, a breath of air. Paul is not telling us to not quench any spirit. There are evil and lying spirits in this world. Paul is speaking the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the breath of Almighty God. If you are saved, the Holy Spirit lives within you. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit of God. We should have a healthy relationship with the Holy Spirit. We have a relationship with God the Father, God the Son and should have a healthy relationship with the Holy Spirit as well. "Quench"/σβέννυμι/sbennumi/to suppress, to hold down, to stifle. The word is "quench" 9 times in the New Testament, "to go out" one time. The Holy Spirit is likened unto a light and a light that can be extinguished. "Not"/μή/mē/the weaker negative for "no". Not one of us has a perfect record with that command. We need to do the best we can not to quench Him. These early churches knew what it meant to have the presence and power of the Holy Ghost. Paul is telling them not to let their fire go out. "Quench" means to "still". When the Holy Spirit is moving, we can cause Him to hush. It means to "dampen". It means to "restrain". It means to "suck dry". It means to "abate". It means "to calm". It means "to fade". We should do none of these things with the Holy Ghost. See Matt. 12:20. Jesus will never quench your fire or hunger for the Word of God. Matthew is quoting Isa. 42:3 about the coming Messiah. See Matt. 25:8. The virgin's lamps had gone out, they had been quenched. Jesus when speaking of hell he said the fire is not quenched. See Eph. 6:16. The shield of faith quenched the fiery darts of the wicked. The water of the Word will quench the fiery darts of the devil. Don't limit the movement of the Holy Ghost in your life. There is a book on the sensitivity of the Holy Ghost. He is the 3rd person of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit has feelings. We can hurt His feelings. See Eph. 4:30. We should not hurt Him or cause Him pain. One harsh word could grieve the Holy Ghost because He is that sensitive. One evil thought can quench or grieve the Holy Spirit. One look of lust can grieve the Holy Spirit. We often minimize the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives. See John 16:14. The Holy Spirit will always glorify and magnify the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Ghost will never glorify Himself. He will not make a service all about Himself. See 2 Cor. 13:14. This is Paul's benediction. We should be in communion with the Holy Ghost. What is that? That is fellowship with Him and enjoying His presence. How can we quench the Holy Ghost? Paul is giving us a list of do's and dont's in the Christian life. If we don't give thanks, we quench the Holy Spirit. If we don't pray, we can quench the Holy Spirit. If we don't rejoice, we could quench the Holy Ghost. If we are ugly to others who are ugly to us, that might quench the Holy Ghost. If we don't comfort the feebleminded and support the weak it could quench the Holy Spirit. Not being at peace with others we could quench the Holy Spirit. Not respecting the man of God could quench the Holy Spirit. This could involve sins of commission and could also be sins of omission. "Despise"/ἐξουθενέω/exoutheneō/to make something of no account, to act like it does not matter. Why does verse 20 follow verse 19? Because the Holy Spirit wants to point us to the preaching of God's Word. This is to treat with contempt or look down on the preaching. "Prophecy" means the preaching and proclamation of the Word of God. Pilate sent Jesus to Herod and Jesus would not answer a word to Herod. Herod set Jesus at nought and mocked Him. (Luke 23:11) Paul said he was sending Timothy and asked them not to despise him or belittle him. Paul was even despised (2 Cor. 10:10). We should love preaching. See 2 Peter 2:5. Noah was a preacher of righteousness. See Matt. 4:23. Jesus went about preaching. "Prophesyings"/προφητεία/prophēteia/forthtelling and foretelling (revealing the future). Everything we need to know about the future is told in the Bible. We should exalt the preaching of the Word of God. Phenomenal study, Dr. Bagwell! Thank you so much for the time you put into these wonderful studies!
We lose a lot of blessings if we quench the moving of the Holy Spirit. I love to be in a meeting when people are being led by the Holy Spirit to testify of the goodness of God in their lives. I must be obedient to the Holy Spirit when He speaks to my heart. Preachers that preach good solid doctrine and uses the right Bible is getting harder to find. We must be careful to whom we are listening.
I like the word light. Fose in greek Orr in hebrew In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, 2 The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. 3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. 4 And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
