- Political power often changes the church more than the church changes those in power-the most glaring example is the damage Trump has done to the credibility of the white evangelical world. Plus, Bill Barr is a liar, and the evolution of Mike Johnson. Peter Wehner joins Tim Miller.

The only president that has truly exemplified living his life according to the teachings of Christ is Jimmy Carter, who has never let fame or money go to his head, cares deeply about the homeless, the hungry, and the sick. He is also the first president to acknowledge that mankind has not been a good steward of this planet, but has been horribly careless. He served this country by serving in the Navy, and cared for his family so much that he went back to Plains to run a peanut farm, and has been faithful to the love of his life, Rosalynn, until and after she died. Yet today's excuse for Republicans vilify him and accuse him of all manner of immoral behavior.
That is insane......😢😢😢😢
Since Trump entered the Picture, Republicans live in an 'ALTERNATIVE FACTS 'World. 😳☹️
That is just wrong and truly Evil. Jimmy Carter should get sainthood. A truly decent and good man who is an example for all.

Just before congress passed the foreign aid bills they were planning a stall involving appliance bills, stoves, refrigerators, maybe that was the last straw for Mike Johnson. I have not heard any more about the Republican appliance bills, have you?
You sure here in central NC many of the elderly people use wood burning Stoves for heat here in the winter. We have been told that the EPA will be forbidding the use by 2025as planned. The NGO I help , provids fuel assistance to those people.

Gonna have to ask how and where you heard it from? Only thing I have seen is banning the sale of new units, not banning the use of existing ones.
Biden has done a great job. He was given everything in pieces and made us whole except for our politics and justice system. Those pieces need overhaul, but it's not one man who has the power or responsibility to reform them. Inflation is no longer the problem: corporate greed is. Gov't policy does not do much about that since we love unfettered capitalism.
And every republiCON voted against the Windfall Tax Bill. Every last one, as far as I know. The outrageous profit margins corporations are reporting, along with the sky high CEO and upper management pay and bonus structures they have, is killing everyday consumers. We need tax reform, like back to before Reagan and his voodoo economics. He, singlehandedly, created this vast wealth disparity we have now in this country.
What reforms to the legal and political systems would you make?
The chief justices need outside ethical reform and limited terms vs life time appointments. We also need changes in political rules and regulations as related to conteibutwe.

There is absolutely nothing Christian when it comes to MAGA and the GOP.
“Anglo-Christian”.
There’s something that non-Christians and many Christians miss or forget. Following the teachings of Jesus don’t make you a Christian.
Belief in the resurrection is what makes you a Christian. Belief that Christ died on the cross to wipe away your sins and give you everlasting life is the magic ticket. The Golden Rule is optional.
Christian Nationalism, White Supremacy, and Maga are completely compatible with Christianity. Do not confuse the religion of Christianity with Jesus and his teachings.

The Moral Majority movement was never about religion but about power.
And they're neither moral nor a majority
Keep a people poor, uneducated, and aggrieved, is a sure way to keep them in line.
Except when it doesn't - French and Russian revolutions.
The minute a religious person starts trying to tell others how they should live is the moment religion is problematic. This is why the Founding Fathers encoded separation of Church and State. That still holds true and always will.
Well put.
The simplest answers are typically the best ones. It is like I say to all these southern baptist co-workers of mine mostly men - who consistently are talking about the evils of abortion - periodically I interject and say I have a solution that will make like a lot easier for you -- "you seem to be dead set against abortion - so I have a solution for you" - "don't have one - there don't you feel better now". and I walk away
I am a person of faith. I have no bias against any religion, save for Evangelicalism. Growing up a RC in the South 60 years ago, I had many woefully ignorant Evangelicals tell me, a little girl, that I was going to hell. To this day, I believe that this hatred of others is at the core of Evangelicalism.
That’s exactly why the Catholic Church does NOT recognize the Evangelical Church as a recognized religion.
@@pointpleasant6708they have no room to talk. they supported Hitler.
@@pointpleasant6708 there is no such thing as an evangelical church. - that does not exist so it would not be hard for the catholic church to do. What is a fact is that back some time ago - the republican party saw an opportunity to convert the south to republican voters as a reaction to the civil rights act of 1964. It is known as the southern strategy - it was a manifesto so to speak on how the republicans could convert the masses - AKA - (middle class americans) to the republican party using race as the justification. It worked extremely well - the phase 2 of that was to convert mid- west catholics - by using abortion as a similar wedge issue. around 1980 or so - those catholic and baptist leaderships saw that there was value in combining forces Paul Weyrich and Jerry Fallwell - later formalized in the Manhattan doctrine.

You guys are so wrong! Yes, Oct 7th was terrible for Israel, but Netanyahu has gone way over the line!
The majority of protestors are not pro Hamas & are not antisemitic, they are simply protesting the genocide going on in Gaza.
I guess nobody remembers the anti Vietnam protests, especially in 1968. The Vietnam protestors, mainly young people were demonized, but they were so right! I took part in those protests & I completely understand the pro-Gaza protesters today.
How can anyone think killing thousands of women & children & destroying the whole Gaza Strip & starving everyone is okay?!
Thank you! There certainly is antisemitism in this country (much actually in the GOP), so seeing some of that show up in the protests is ugly but not unexpected. But the vast majority of the pro Palestinians are in no way antisemitic. That’s been made clear by both students and faculty at the various universities.
i'm very thankful for the persistence of the campus protests. maybe one day people like this dope wehner will realize being against apartheid and genocide doesn't make you a terrorist
Yea. Israel completely lost the moral high ground months ago. Some times the nature of the protesting is not good, but in general it's important that they continue.
Thank you for the replies to my comment. I wondered if anyone else thought the same way I did about Tim & Peter Wehner's comments about the protests.
It is very infuriating to me that all these "talking heads" are demonizing the protestors who are only standing up against what is happening in Gaza.
Of course, there may be a few antisemitic people there, but the majority are just voicing their democratic right of free speech.
I applaud them & if I wasn't 77 & in poor health, I would join them without hesitation.
Thank you for your thoughts.
Pray for Gaza!
As one who took part in Vietnam protests, WWII generation didn’t want to believe the govt was lying to the people.
I am a liberal Christian who was raised in a liberal church. Watching so many on the Christian right embrace the depravity of Donald Trump has been so painful because i think what you are saying is right. This will have long term, damaging effects on how many people engage with religion. I see an opportunity for people to find peace and community in the church cut off for many in younger generations. It makes me incredibly sad.
I hear you. I was a Christian for almost 50 years and now I don’t want anything to do with it. I imagine this will have consequences for generations.
Exactly.
They obviously don’t care how much they are destroying Christianity. I think it accelerated with the Catholic priests, when it was found out what they were doing to those boys, l don’t believe religion ever recovered. Now to see these pastors laying hands on Trump and telling us that we are evil because we don’t support his criminality and manipulation of Christians… it’s the icing on the cake. Who would have ever thought that it would be us who don’t mk a show of our faith, who would be the most faithful? I’m really paying attention to Christians this election because many of them are starting to speak out and question supporting Trump. I see so many Christian UA-camrs trying to have that conversation with their fellow supporters… it’s interesting.
I can see younger people being totally turned by it.

Jesus taught a radical love. I cannot understand how anyone can claim to follow Him and His teaching and stand for the former prez. Beyond comprehension....
You’re making the common mistake of thinking that all Christians worship Jesus. They worship Christ. For some Christians the teachings of Jesus are important. For others they’re secondary. But the most important aspect of Christianity is the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. It’s right there in the name.
There are many good Christians that do use Jesus as an example for their lives. But it’s not the belief in the crucifixion and resurrection that makes them good.

Not entirely sure what you mean precisely - but it might be instructive to note that - most of these supreme court justices - particularly those that have been promoted by Leonard Leo and the federalist society -all have associations ties to some of the most extreme dogmatic subgroups of the catholic church. The idea that those that many adherents constitute a majority of the US supreme court is an ENORMOUS red flag that no one seems to ever mention. So whatever it is that you are referring to fox news brain worms - I can assure you it is no coincidence those people are put there for a very deliberate reason. That Alito likes to reference examples from the 14th or 15th century is not some little personal quirk - it is reflective of how he sees the world and how he wants it to be.

Welp, Tim, as someone who has been surrounded by fundamentalist and evangelicals all my life, they do not need permission to tell you all about their religious and moral beliefs. In fact, it is impossible to shut them up. If anything, the rest of us need to learn how to set boundaries. Once we’ve been exposed to the messages they seem charged with distributing, it would be nice if the created a database of those of us who have heard their version of the gospel and have said, “no thank you. I have my own belief system” so they could check us off their lists.
The problem is evangelicals and fundamentalists seem willfully ignorant about the rest of us. We’re not trying to prevent them from living their best Christian lives. We’re trying to stop them from imposing it on the rest of us. That is something that do not respect and can’t be addressed by giving them even more deference and platforms to spread their word. BTW, just because we’re not evangelical Christians doesn’t mean we’re all atheists, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Some of the best people I know are non-believers.

After growing up evangelical (in Europe) I wasn't supriced by their support of Trump. I have met many evangelical persons who looked down on Judaism but supported a Israeli state fully because there need to be one for a second coming of Christ. When I was a kid, people said they were Lutheran, Presbyterian, Catholic, whatever….now people say they’re Christian.
some evangelical christians dont even know catholics are christians!
Tim is so personable. Sometimes, I have to remind myself that I'm using the Bulwark as a "peep hole" into the minds of the bad guys.
……Minds of another viewpoint, Never Trumpers are not enemies
@wcwright44 Tim is a "mind of another viewpoint" ... some of these guests though... SMH.
"Bad guys" being MAGAs -- best to be crystal clear here because you sadly are not.
What crap! Opposition to the actions of Israel do not make one ‘Antisemitic.
I wrote my congressman Flood told him I don't give a dam about my gas Stove pass military aid what a bunch of crap
Myself, as a Christian, was glad to hear a pastor come out against this “use” of the Bible.
The Barr is set very low.
Bill barr is so totally full of it. I had not realized how so very much I appreciate and miss……Barry Goldwater. Maga IS nuts.
Before we get all misty-eyed about Barry Goldwater, let's remember that he proposed using nukes in Vietnam and was an unapologetic extremist: "Extremism in defense of virtue is no vice." And of course "virtue" to a Republican always means "all power to the wealthy."
Joe Biden has done so many great things for our country. I cannot figure out why anyone would vote for him just because they don't want the orange guy. (I can't even say his name.)
It's a pretty good reason rather than not voting or a third candidate vote. Only getting the Dems back in will allow for the corrections of all the flaws that have been exposed in this fiasco.

Because the republiCONS think the only way to hold any power is through cheating and gerrymandering and lies and fear. They produce so much propaganda, misinformation and disinformation, it really should be illegal to lie as much as they do.
Omg, Tim you are such an incredibly reasonable, joyful, cautious, and terribly informed leader of the great considerations of our time!!!! Thank you.
Barr should have been born 2 centuries ago
Buddy for Benedict Arnold?
Somebody in his family was .
…or not at all. How was HE the best swimmer???
Johnson deserves no credit for doing the right thing months later. He would have gotten credit if he had done the right thing right away, but he cowardly bowed to Trump. The cost of that is Ukranian lives.
39:17 these folks are by and large the most privileged people living in the freest, strongest and most advanced society in the history of humankind. Their ‘grievance’ is nothing but moral weakness.
Many of these people would benefit from spending some time in some of the world’s poor and dysfunctional countries for some perspective on how lucky they are.
Their grievances exist in large parts due to the people they vote for. Especially economic grievances. They take legitimate anger generated due to the shrinking middle class, and instead of correctly identifying who’s to blame (Chicago School Economists, Neoliberalism, the GOP, Barry Goldwater, etc), they double down and blame their problems on the people trying to fix them. It’s absurd.
Amen! Finally, a pastor who speaks out against this blasphemy and grift
It's heartening to listen to someone who sees the hypocrisy, real religious diversion from the teachings in the bible and sees the value of maintaining the separation of church and state
I worry that people want to forget and move on from the COVID mess, the continuing inflation hit, and most voters not paying any attention to the election worries me that it could cost Biden the election.
They need to be told, by every person with a microphone in front of them, what the REAL REASONS are behind the inflation. That Biden tried to get the Windfall Tax Bill passed, which would have helped. But every republiCON voted against it. Just like the border bill.
I don't think that they do not believe it could happen here. I think both Sununu and Barr are fully on board with the trump plan.
Sad that as a RC - in these Dark MAGA times, people like Peter are now who I go to see the much needed Moral Courage central to real Christianity. Thank you Peter! --
Absolutely fantastic episode.
Thank you both very much

Evangelicals have that interesting blend of peity and contempt
Piety always implies contempt, doesn't it? "I've got the answer and you don't. Nya!"
@@lawsonj39 oh yeah 🤔 that's uh .. sentential

As a lawyer, I can't believe any lawyer could follow orange Hitler
I am a 68 year old liberal Christian. Not this new kind. The kind that loves one another.
Thanks Tim and Peter. A really good and insightful conversation, and a really pleasant discussion on Christian faith and Trump.
We're not missing anything. We have just gotten wrong the magnitudes of the factors - tribalism, pride, vulnerability to demagoguery. They're all just a lot more powerful than we thought they were.
So tired of hearing people blame all of this on the Palestinians
Aren't both sides at Blame?
How on Earth people think we're living in a "bad" economy is just insane! Every single indicator is rising and inflation is moderating. I blame corporate greed for the persistent high prices, not classic inflation. Case in point: Seven years ago I bought a car battery from NAPA for $55.00 Adjusted for inflation that's about $70.00 today. Yet the cost today of that very same model? $195.00! Jeezus. What a rip!
Very insightful conversation. Thank you!
It’s very hard as a Christian to see what the so called evangelicals are doing for the message. The message they send is not right. It’s just not. Vengeance is for God to deliver. Not man. Especially not a man as morally bankrupt as Trump.
Thank you,Tim and Peter, for a very thoughtful and informative conversation.
I have two sisters and a brother who relocated to the south 35 and 40 years ago. All three are born agen Christians and evangelicals. It's very hard for myself to be around them during election season, for they all vote republican no matter what. Their excuse is that sometimes God uses disgusting men to do good things. Then they tell me to read the Bible again. I don't want to read it again infact I'm getting tired of hearing all the stories in the Bible over and over for 69 😢
You should read it (the Gospels) ----- if only to challenge them with its actual contents which could not be more Opposite to all things MAGA in Every way. And repeat NO EXCUSES to all the BS they are repeating to try to rationalize why Any human being, let alone a "Christian", would ever vote for anyone so clearly Evil!
Many of us do not participate in polls when given the opportunity. We have lives and things to do. Some people are just lonely and love to stay on their landline talking to a stranger that seems to value their opinions. Polls aren’t a true measure of the direction of the world.😅
Blackmailed, bribed or a coward unwilling to brook his MAGA peers? We don't know, but it's one of those things.
Do not forget the Independents.
I love this. I am a Christian, and I am a moderate Democrat. Both should be praised because I want good for the world; however, I fear disclosing my political beliefs to my friends and family in fear that I will be judged. I am also a mental health professional, or at least on my way to being one. My faith has never taught me to judge to make people feel small or unworthy. It has taught me to have faith in the hard times and faith in people: I am constantly reminded that I am not perfect; I do need God. As an aspiring professional in mental health, I can say that people who follow Trump are being abused. However, they don’t realize it. Some people who have not worked through past trauma are more likely to be manipulated and find themselves in abusive situations again! And for those who are complicit to get ahead, well, they are just as bad as Donald Trump. They have proven that they do not care about humanity but only themselves, which is selfish.
With regards to what is happening with this war, I keep thinking of the Langston Hughes poem, “What Happens to a Dream Deferred.”
17:39 Part's of the GOP is just showing their true colors. 😢
His wealthy friends talked to them….he is back in line. Coward.
Greetings from a listener/viewer and political junkie all the way in Norway! Love the podcast, keep up the good work, Tim and Team Bulwark!
Just listened to the podcast and had to jump on here and thank you, Tim for this episode. Peter helps Jesus followers who are not Christian Nationalists know they are not alone. Very encouraging
Out of everyone involved in enabling Trump, I have been most surprised and disappointed that some in the Evangelical community. I have seen years ago some who have walked in self righteousness while condemning others, so it’s not surprising their support of him, but, to have so many who claim to be Christians is alarming.
Even before the Trump/MAGA lunacy, the Evangelicals have always been as phony as "3-dollar-bills".
Right, and then they feel disrespected by so many due to their brazen hypocrisy - so need a clearly Evil (fake) "Strong" man like 45 to "protect" them. Not only a vicious cycle but a sadly Stupid one!
Barr has a real problem. It's hard to wrap my mind around his "explanations"
Thank you for standing up for the much more universal and important teachings of Christianity, which is summed up in 1. Corinthians 13: selfless love
Separation of Church and State is--or should be--no more difficult than separating one's personal life from one's professional life.
America's current political condition derives fundamentally from the past several decades of the 10% becoming enriched at the expense of the 90%. The trickle down economic model foist upon the country under Reagan is the point where we can identify a sharp lurch toward welfare for the rich and crumbs for the rest. The resulting disaffection under this toxic capitalism has a sizeable plurality ready to nihilstically give the System a big FU.
Voting for a 'strong man' autocrat is the surrogate pitchforks in the street.
I think many progressives like me sees faith like a crutch for getting tru life. We don't hate that crutch, it was usefull until I realized that the problems in my life where mortal and that the solutions needed to be that to, suffering has no point to it. And we who could let go of that crutch don't mind others having it. We also needed it, we might even remember it fondly. The problem the evangelical right-wing movement, globally, is that they want to force everyone to use it without question or debate.
