Navy vet; honestly, if you could see the level of blatantly irresponsible spending the military pays these contracting firms and companies, people would probably lose their minds. Most of the military spending goes toward paying these contractors.
This made me realize that the military budget is likely, at least, 10x bigger than it should be. That's billions of dollars that could have been used better in social services... including the services used to help vets after a military career.
A fellow Veteran, U.S. Army here, I've been waiting decades for this issue to finally be addressed. I served overseas and stateside. Germany was my first. Couldn't believe the price of a screwdriver and hammer. AOC hit it on the head. Having 4 daughter's 1 of them is diabetic, type 1, so I understand why she is doing this. She has done her homework. Kinda like in that movie "Dave" with Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. My oldest friend ( over 40 years) was on the USS Cole when it was attacked by terrorists. He survived it, luckily he was further away from the explosion. I was furious about it. He told me about it when he got out. As always, to my brothers and sisters , I salute you!!!

s0fa there are some rather significant details missing here as far as numbers go. Such as, what is the R&D history up to beta testing, what is it FOR?, will it cost lives if it fails. I’ve worked on aircraft support equipment in the Air Force and a .19 cent part failing can mean an aircraft couldn’t take off right now. There’s a story behind everything like the navy paying thousands of dollars for a toilet seat. That specific seat was a test run for a one off plastic material, if the material held up to submarine conditions it could be applied to other instrumentation on the sub. Yes they gave money back but will a cheap part fail in the worst situation possible? When you absolutely know the track record of proven parts they actually are worth their weight in gold.

@@skeezix8156 No, a margin that big is never justified. It's only possible if the company dominates the market and can charge whatever it wants. Which is by the way only possible, because governments give patents and allow for limited form of monopoly to exist (e.g. Google's search engine). That's why we have anti-trust laws. In a truely competitive market companies compete by lowering their prices and usually ends up by pricing at double its cost. So that thing should have been around 70-80 dollars in price.

Government contractors are held to a higher standard than a company that just sells to the public. Their facilities often have to pay federal inspectors that are assigned full time to the factory. Third party testing companies often must be hired to put parts through rigorous inspections. They must carry higher than normal levels of insurance and bonds. The paperwork and documentation necessary is enormous and expensive.
In the early years of my career I worked for an independent testing company that ensured products the government bought met exacting standards. We tested rubber bands...rubber bands used in clerical situations, not something that was going to be used on the space shuttle, these were in an office holding rolled up papers. We also tested fuel pumps for F-16 fighter jets to make sure they lasted a minimum number of hours and while in any position.
That’s just a few of the reasons there isn’t as much competition amongst contractors and suppliers.

Forever Family if you only go to college to get a certificate, you are doing it wrong. You go to college for knowledge(fundamentals), networking, easier internships, and sometimes because you need to (medicine, engineering, or law jobs). College campuses are larger than schools and have expensive equipment. Lecturers are also paid much higher than highscool teachers(obviously, as they need higher qualifications) with some getting 6 figure salaries. These are only some of the reasons you shouldnt compare price of schools and colleges

SprayEndPray - she is pointing the economy out. There were likely other competitors, but they still didn’t have much choice...there must be some reason why they didn’t choose them. Maybe they were just as expensive or lower quality- the point is: the company was profiting on the fact that the gov. had little options and not much of a choice.
There's always another choice, including the choice not to buy at all. The problem is not just with the sellers, it's mostly with the buyers. Something like this always stinks to high heaven of kickback.

You are completely missing the point. The government is complicit in these large expenditures, but when it comes to infrastructure and improving communities, suddenly the money has run dry. Probably because they can't by stocks in clean water and sturdy bridges.

I remember several years ago when Obama was President he did a similar thing to Lockheed I believe it was over the cost overruns for the F-35/JSF program. The project has lasted for over 10 years beginning during the GW Bush era and Lockheed was still requesting money for R&D. Obama told them he would pay for half of it, but not all of it and really stuck it to Lockheed. If I were him I would have made Lockheed pay for all of it and I guarantee Lockheed would have had a finished fighter by the end of the month. Car companies fund their own R&D so why should Lockheed be any different? Didn’t agree with a lot on Obama, but this was one of the few times I did. Too many of these government contractors are charging as much as they can because they can. AOC is right: this market is not as competitive as the private market and is often rigged and manipulated more than the private market is.
To be fair to that man, our government was too stupid. And that's a fact.

They could have gone to another contractor and even if there were none, it is not the responsibility of the contractor to provide competitors. She does not seem to understand what a free market is.

Finally, I agree with something Miss Cortez said 👏. I would have liked if she continued to press the issue and have him explain the gross mismanagement and how they justify ripping off the public instead of him spinning the conversation into the quality of their products and good customer service. This is definitely a bipartisan issue and neither party has ever done anything to stop it. This is one of the many reasons I choose to pledge allegiance to no political party whatsoever! Miss Cortez, if you can help the swamp account for itself, I applaud you, but please spend the money on American citizens.
