Rizzo is not a very good hitter. He had some fastballs that could have been crushed 400+ feet and fouled them off. This was more about how awful the pitchers are than about his hitting ability. I'll take great hitters like Trea Turner and Freddie Freeman over him any day of the week.

He can't spray the ball all over the field, use his speed to beat out infield grounders, or hit gappers with any consistency. You need a special swing and a more athletic build to be able to do that. Someone like Byron Buxton is built for that.

He may not be the player he was a couple of years back with Chicago, but he’s consistent, he puts the bat on the ball, & knows how to be a situational hitter better than most guys in the league today.

Yeah, but the difference, as he is saying, is that he moved up specifically to pull the changeup. Different than choking up to gain leverage for contact on a 2-strike count (he didnt even choke up)

He understands the reasons behind any adjustment and puts himself in the pitchers shoes to figure out what's coming next. Of course everybody is taught to choke up on 2 strikes, but few are as effective with their choke-up swing and even fewer truly know how to use it to its max advantage.

It sucks that he's gone but there was just "something" missing in those last years on the Cubs. The same goes for Javy and KB as well. I will go to my grave saying that team UNDERachieved for all the talent they had at one time. I put a lot of it on Maddon honestly. I feel like we won in SPITE of him.

Something that a lot of us Cubs fans know from watching Rizz for all these years is how good he is at making those adjustments. He’s keen on things like this, having a B swing to go to as well. Great ballplayer and its disgusting to see him wear 48 instead of 44.

It was the 2006 Mets team that did it for me. The Cardinals were great that year, so you have to tip your hat, but they would've walked away with it if they won the NLCS.

He has crowded the plate for years. He gets hit by tons of pitches but he also sends a lot of balls in play as well. He'll also choke up on the bat as much as he moves his feet. He's a great player.
Rizzo has always had a tremendous baseball IQ. I was one of the few that preferred his resigning to a couple of the other free agents this off-season. He's just always impressed me as a smart player than will make the most out of every situation.

This channel is such a positive force for baseball. Kids with short attention spans need this. Rizzo kicks ass, and is a real big leaguer, that's fun and valuable to learn from, for sure.
The batter/pitcher dynamic and mind games are why I love baseball so much. A hitter recognizing that pattern, making the tiniest adjusment, and turning it into a dinger, love to see it.
God, I miss seeing Rizzo in Chicago. I loved listening to the radio broadcasts, where Ron Coomer would constantly mention Rizzo's approach on 2 strike counts. He chokes up on the bat, shortens his swing, and makes sure he at least makes contact on the strikes he isn't looking for while being ready to crush anything he sees coming. We gained a lot of potential talent by trading him, but we lost a ton of experience. This is proof that players who might be past their physical prime can still find ways of performing, and - more importantly - educating the younger players.

Little league coach always used the analogy of squishing the bug when swinging. Rizzo does that too really well 😆 He reminds me of an Edgar Martinez with how smart he is at the plate. Love it!
