This is awesome! I saw a great gig with Pat Metheny and Roy Haynes at the Van Dyck in Schenectady, NY. Since Roy isn't getting any younger and that club is no longer open, I'm very glad I went.
I liked this very much. They kind of felt their way into it. I think that's the way jazz in small groups should be played. Robben Ford said in an interview once that when he first played with Miles Davis he met him before the gig and the only thing that Davis wanted to know was what Ford was going to wear onstage. lol.
one of the greatests drummers lisedt & learn youngsters .if u wanna go forward u have to go back in time to discover the amazing heritage that those people left to the music so the nu cats can keep it going. ;-)
just a conversation between two musicians feeling each other out. listening and cautiously moving in time that is not locked into one rhythmic groove, just tempo, and the harmonic skeleton of an old standard. It is what it is. neither at their best, but nice to hear therm checking in the context of brave improv.
yes indeed and today NOONE CAN DO THIS W/ THE APPROACHES TO MUSIC IT astonishes me what they need, just to sound so bad....alot to see and learn here for those who can Hear..
I understand that free jazz is strange - I am still developing an ear for it. It's not wacky for the sake of being wacky - I think of it like a conversation. Sometimes, it has a clear structure and everyone knows where it's headed, with clear and articulate articulation. But other times, like in this case, Bireli may tell a story, and Haynes will laugh or gasp or even sigh on his instrument. It's different, but the fact that it made me think about this proves it's art.
I don't think they're being wacky. They're establishing the avenues of communication. "If you say this, here's what you can expect from me." "Here's a bit of my vocabulary." It would be like if you encountered someone from a foreign country and you both wanted to not just have a conversation, but produce something consumable by the public.
@anadryantontine Yeah, I liked the apparent spontaneity of the players' interaction in the first 2 minutes. Then much of what followed sounded schmaltzy by comparison - if only they could have continued in the same vein. Loved that melodic Haynes drum solo though - I don't think it sounded pretentious in the least! Still I'm not all that experienced in this type of music so some may not have thought it tasteful.
I dont like too much the version that bireli interprests here. Im not saying that he isnt a good player or nothing. He is terrific, one of the best players in the world.
Jazz sure is much about 'conversation' between the musicians, call and response, but I believe free jazz is just everyone babbling at the same time! and by the way, I don't think this is free jazz... genres suck anyway, I like to think there is only good and bad music :)
I know Biréli is a genius, and I love him to death, and I can certainly also say the same for Roy Hanes buuuuuuut. I feel like the first two minutes should have be mixed throughout the bulk of what is a beautiful guitar 'n' drums interpretation of Autumn Leaves. While it's one of those things I love about jazz, being wacky for the sake of being wacky can sound really pretentious. Thumbs up if you get where I'm coming from, even if you disagree!
my god .. the concept of applying a of a set of chord progressions as a name of a previously recorded "song" when improvised on, is totally asinine. this is totally new music.
i´m sorry, i really like Biréli Lagrène and Roy Haynes, but the first 2 minutes Roy was playing anything but a proper rhythm to autumn leaves! Maybe it was meant that way though....
mmh, I don't really like the drums... it all sounds like they're just playing their own thing and not minding each other.. Well at least until 3:00 - after that it starts getting a lot better ^^.
haha most of the time birelli even as a guitarist likes to dictate the grooves. It's refreshing to see someone else take over. Sadly birelli is struggling and his usual chops don't make the cut
i like bireli's chords. that's so godly amazing........wow
i could fall asleep listening to this. So soothing and right- in a good way!! Beautiful musicianship!
Roy Haynes will never be old.
Biréli is the King!!!

Roy is da MAN and Bireli well ...AMAZING
Okay after watching it again. It makes more sense. Roy Hanes is a beast. So is birelli
okay watched it again. I know nothing

Thank you - Just what I needed to hear ...
Super duo !!!
This a new level of music
The Sound of a different Drum.Roy is the living Legend.

4:40 what a chord !!!!
one of my biggest influences
That stage is awesome
In the special setting, Mr. Haynes plays as a percussionist. Very intellectual!

Great!
Bireli is the man
It just beautiful music...don't worry about what it is called.
Duo 💓
Dire qu'il y a 18 blaireaux qui n'ont pas aimé !Je desespere de la race humaine...
Very nice performance. Does anybody know where and when this work was recorded? France? Switzerland?
very good!
The first 2 minutes or so could almost be one of those " ((insert famous guitarist)Shreds" videos
nylonsteel but only "almost" since bireli is better lol
the beginning reminds me of the "shred"-series here on youtube.
You know about these? "Santana shreds" and so on?
but cool though...
Capos del jazz
cool Autumn leaves!

cel mai mare jazz-man ,al momentului, dupa ....nu se va sti.
@JBWMDR I'm pretty sure you can count on Roy Haynes knowing and playing exactly what he wanted and meant to play on any given tune. ;-)

2 giants

naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasty!!!
soul... you cant buy it...you cant acquire it ..it isn't handed to like some reward...it's from the beginning..those who have it realise it early on
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
PHILTHY!!!
I admit I don't like modern jazz. But this is damn good.
refreshing to dig a open mind..favino881

Reminds me of Coltrane and Art Taylor (or Elvin Jones).
I dont like too much the version that bireli interprests here.
Im not saying that he isnt a good player or nothing. He is terrific, one of the best players in the world.
Biréli lagrène has a weaaaak sound.
Who sent the bass player packing? When Elvin and Coltrane were really going at it, you couldn't hear much Jimmy Garrison...
@Maherylevrai D major
@wallace6969 so other french musicians are bad? Dats the opposite
Bireli is the "spiritual son" of reinhardt (belg)
French musicians are epic

sound quality is killing me.
it happens in the moment... analysing kills it
that s true for sex, euh jazz ... excusez moi, i am french, and many other things !;)

could it be the lack of rhythm section that he has? idk, but i think it's great nonetheless

I would say that his problem (in this performance at least) is that he trys too hard to play against the time.
mmh, I don't really like the drums... it all sounds like they're just playing their own thing and not minding each other.. Well at least until 3:00 - after that it starts getting a lot better ^^.
