I hopped my first freight ride through Long Dock “Deadman’s Tunnel” on Easter Sunday in 1967! My friend and I were 14 yrs. old when we climbed on a moving train on the Weehauken Line staying on the east side, so we would not be riding close to the wall at the western portal of Long Dock. Before passenger service ended, there were two tracks inside this tunnel. After passenger service ended, one track was removed. After 1967, the remaining track was moved to the middle, where it is today. 50 men died building this tunnel. They lived in a place called Shanty Town, which was located on the present site of Dickinson High School today; and had a population of 2,000. The builders lived with their families near the tunnel site. The men were paid by a payroll train. Even though several ventilation shafts were built into the tunnel ceiling, there was a big problem with smoke inside the tunnel, and this was a passenger line! This led to the building of the Erie Cut, which we now know as The Bergen Arches.
Wow Shoestring... brings back memories... I rode trough that very tunnel headed to the Hudson River Line on an old style open cab ballast cleaner in 1984... a lot of wild times... stories galore... thanks for the post...
