Excellent review. An interesting fact for you. The Airhead was created by a former Nature’s head employee I’m told. He changed all the ‘issues’ he had with the Natures head and built the Airhead. A lot of composting toilet users also have a spray bottle with a vinegar solution or herbal concoction to clean up after those who miss the hole. Poop, close the hatch, and spray. Spray goes into the urine diverter. Cheers from Canader eh!
I’m close to getting done with the demo part of my bus and am starting to make decisions on specific things I’m gonna need to get during the build. These features you’ve shown for the Airhead is the exact reason I’m gonna get it. It seems this one is more user friendly in all the aspects that are most important to me with having a composting toilet. So thank you for making this video! It definitely helped me decide which one to get!
Thank you so much for the in-depth explanation of the differences between the AirHead and the Nature's head. It's good to know that they are options out there other than a Nature's head. I'm glad that you guys found the right toilet for you!
So I want to be a nomad and I also live in AZ can you please tell me where you got the air head composting toilet? If you have a list I will need for tools and anything else you might think of that I will need for my conversion? I will be looking at busses Tuesday. 3 2019. Thank you Jonie Richens
A lot of owners run a line to the gray water tank and discharge it there. Others run a line to a 5 gal bucket beneath the bus in a compartment. The 5 gal bucket has a spigot to help drain the bucket. What he did was connect 2-5 gal bucket together with a valve between them. This way, if you are in a spot that is not available to dump, you have 10 gallons of room to play with. Something to consider. Good Luck.....
It actually starts the composting process, and that helps it compost sooner (eliminating the risk of the pathogens sooner) in the landfill. But why take the bucket outside? Get a bag (black, preferably? maybe a 13-gallon garbage can bag) and put over the bucket, then wrap a bungie around it to tighten it up, so that you can turn it upside down. Shake/tap the bucket so that most of the contents fall into the bag. Turn the bucket back upright, only with the filled bag to the side, resting on the ground. Remove the bungee to free the bag; tie the #2 bag closed. Stick a biohazard sticker on it to warn dumpter divers, and one that warns of human waste would not be a bad idea. Put the bag to be tossed in a plastic shopping bag with handles, maybe, to make carrying it to be thrown out less obvious. And you can do this in the shower, where it is relatively easier to wipe up any spills that may occur.
Thank you so much for your review. You pointed out the differences between airhead & natures head pretty well. Three things made us thinkung. First the electricity plug stays in place, second the extra lid and taking off the pee tank without opening the poo container. Think we change our mind and go for airhead too. Nicole & Gilbert
I am researching this for a small travel trailer… I found several interesting points that you brought up I haven’t heard in other reviews. Thank you for the thorough review and explanation of why you chose this over other brands. I will be going with the airhead.
Not sure if I commented a year ago when I saw this video. Sorry, if I already did. I just went back today to watch this video again. I have two month before I need to order my composting toilet. Yes, I’m going with the Air Head. You guys did a great review. Y’all made some excellent points, especially the urine diverter part. I was on the fence a year ago. It was between the other one or the Air Head. You convinced me then, you reinforced it now. Thank you.
Thank you for the "break down of the brown" The builders are getting a airhead for me. I was worried about older people when they drop a plop they tinkle a little this for sure help. then you went over the fact that it is closed and the mellow yellow runs into the mellow yellow can collector thing. Rock on thank you for real.
I love that you explained this! I agree with you completely!!! I think many people just pick the Nature Head over the Airhead because of the name. Airhead is what we call someone who not smart. But the differences are such a huge difference to me that the Airhead is what we will be getting. Awesome vid! Thank you!
Nice review and comparison of the two composting toilets. We also bought the Airhead for our truck camper a year ago and the reasons you sighted for your choice were exactly the same impressions and reasons I had and chose the Airhead. You had a couple I either was unaware of or did not think about, but with over a year of use I absolutely agree. While your point of having the poo bucket cover is nice to have if you remove the top portion to carry out and dump, I have found it better to carry the whole toilet intact out and remove the top portion outside. Reason being is I can do a much more complete and thorough job of cleaning the top section outside. With regards to the coffee filters, I have found I do not need them and leave no skid marks to clean, while my wife finds she needs to use the coffee filters. Our experience with our Airhead has been positive and excellent and in fact we are planning to trade our truck camper in on a new rig and plan to get a new Airhead for the new rig as we will have to leave the current one behind. Good luck with yours and thanks for sharing your review.
The other thing is because the fan is seperate you could remove the vent and pipe and take it out of the bathroom when you have a shower which would be great for a wet bathroom.
The differences you note in this video are absolute game changers or you wouldn't have decided on one over the other. I planned to develop/design my own toilet that would have contained some very similar features as the Airhead. I knew I did not want a Natures head from the first video I've seen on it. But thank you for sharing this video it is very helpful. If I don't develop my own system it would be because I bought the Airhead system.
I know I could make something like this but at this point I am picking my battles. The bus is a gigantic project and buying an elegantly designed toilet was worth the design, building, testing, redesign and deployment of a custom toilet. I am happy with this purchase because, I am done with this project.
I'm glad you went over the differences. These are the same thoughts I've had as I work on my bus. It does seem most people have the natureshead, and from my research I found the airhead to have much better features. Basically all the things you went over. The only thing you didn't cover is that with the airhead you are supposed to be able to lift off the seat with out tilting it, whereas on the natureshead you have to tilt it back first. This means you need more clearance behind the toilet with the natureshead, and it is more cumbersome. Thanks for sharing
Exactly the information I was looking for after narrowing the choice down to the NH and the AH. All the features that you liked on the AH were the same for me. Thank you so much !
First, I LOVE the name Bussy McBusface!!!! Second, this is one of the funniest damn videos I have ever seen and third, it is also one of the most informative!!! In the recent and now fairly intense head-to-head battle of the heads between Nature's Head and the newer Airhead, you guys mentioned a couple of things that I haven't heard anyone else mention! The fact that the liquids bucket can be removed without opening this poo pail and the crazy awesome lid for the poo pail!!! I worked in a hospital laboratory for several years, and a woman once brought her poo sample in for testing in a lovely gift box with a beautiful pink bow, but I think your "crock pot" comment was the best ever!!!!! Rock on!!!!!!!!
Great info. I'm not sold on the composting toilet yet, but this gave a lot of info on how they work and everything. I'm rebuilding an old 1970ish camper trailer from the frame up. More of a redesign than a rebuild really. I haven't started researching CT yet so this is very helpful. Thanks.
Excellent in depth explanation. I am trying to decide between the 2 and this helped! I especially like the fan design on this one as you stated. Much easier design. I see this video is a couple years old. Still loving it?
The filters are a brilliant idea! Dump stations and areas i use for my dometic porta arent equipt for any compost items. Not sure id dare take this in anywhere here but when these stations upgrade, id like this one better for the same reasons. Thanks
I am glad you mentioned that the poop and coir is not composted when you dump it. It takes heat and time to make the compost safe from harmful pathogens. We have been using self made compost toilets for thirty years and making wonderful compost for our garden. Cost of each unit about £30. A four chamber composting system made out of pallet wood. Never a smell from the toilets or the compost system. So you didn’t mention where you would be dumping your tub of non composted health hazard poop? I have heard many RVers say they bag it up (could be messy) and dump it in the trash? Argument being there are already a lot of disposable nappies (diapers) in there. I think it’s a shame to waste what will be great compost by putting it in the rubbish, in the uk this would probably be shipped off to a third world country to deal with! Maybe towns could have a dump for compostable waste, but it would smell unless someone was responsible for turning it and supervising it for years. Jenkins, The Humanure Handbook is out of print but it is downloadable for free. It was our bible. By the way if I had an Air Head or similar system, I would paint the pee container, spray or paint a design, to camouflage the yellow colour. Great video, made me laugh. Thanks.
You guys seriously, I love your humour so funny, I have used a natures Head and seriously everything you said is correct, as it wasn’t mine, those points you have made did put me of a little bit, however now I have seen this one wow yep that’s what I’m getting for my bus an air head, thanks 🙏 really enjoy watching your videos seriously there’s just nothing fake it’s all real and funny well done please stay that way you are a beautiful couple love ya both cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Omg!!!! I love you guys. You have me sold on this toilet. I laughed threw the whole video. I need to find your video on how to seal a plastic water tank accidentally cut mine with my saw this weekend and someone told me you guys had a video on how to repair it.
Hi, I have heard (not sure how true it is) that the Airhead designer originally worked at Natureshead. It does seem that the differences with the Airhead take into account the pet peeves that Natureshead owners might have had.
Excellent video, brought up a LOT of points we had not considered. My wife requests I ask your opinion of your new toilet after using it for a while...
Hi Mike and Kerry! I have to say y'all are so hilarious, but, yet on point at the same time! I'm going to be full time real soon and my dream had been to find someone to build out a completely stealth Promaster; well, that was no problem...the problem was the waiting list to get it done was atrocious. I do not wanna wait 3-6 months (or longer) for this to be built before I can hit the road! So, my alternate choice is the Pleasureway Lexor TS. I will definitely be having the same composting toilet [as y'all have] installed. I mean, why carry your poop and urine around in a water saturated container and then have to wait in line [or even pay] to dump. The cost is somewhat breathtaking (no pun intended!) but well worth the money when you consider how long one can go without having to 'dump' in the traditional way. Great video y'all! I have almost come to a finish on binge watching all of your videos... I think I have only a couple more to go then I'll be all caught up! Be safe, stay happy, love God, and, I'll see ya' in the next video! ( 8/22/2019. Thursday. 5:29amCST. ~Jim in Houston, Texas~ )
I would imagine that spraying the bowl and trapdoor with a hydrophobic spray like never wet would help prevent stuff sticking to the bowl and trap door. Of course, using coffee filters is common with portable camp cassette toilets which also use a trapdoor bowl.
I guess you never used a NH, right? - With the NH you have way more capacity. It's 4-6 weeks with 2 persons full-time. - The dimensions of the AH are only a few millimeters smaller, but you have to empty it much more frequently, because of it's shape. - You can get the NH with different handles, if you like. Mountable on both sides. - Unplugging the fan is a 1 second thing. The fan doesn't blow... - The urine bottle always stays in place, even off-road, because the holder holds it safely. If you drill a few holes in the holder, you can use it in a wet bath. - Transporting the urine bottle, use a bag to transport the urine bottle, if you're ashamed. With the NH, you realize pretty early, when you have to empty it... in contrary to the AH. - With the NH, you don't have a "home feel" toilet seat, but at the same time, you don't have any edges, where dirt can sit. Much more hygienic as all these sealings, you need for a wet bath with an AH. And no flimsy hinges to break, no thin lid you never get replaced. - There is a lid for the NH available as well. - And, you never need any of these coffee filters for the NH, because the hole is big enough and the trap door opens properly... And, last thing, there's a 5 year warranty as well for the NH. Guys, did they pay you? Mark it as advertising! We use our NH for 3 years now with 3 persons, never had any issues. I'm pretty happy with all the stainless steel parts, because they will never break. When we planned our truck, we had a close look to all available composting and separating toilets, like AH, NH, Separett, and have chosen the NH for it's robustness.
Their manual that comes with nature’s head tells you if you have a All in one shower? Drill a hole in bottom of urine caddy.. I like the fact that the urine has a caddy to hold onto it... a friend painted her urine container with roses and sunflowers! Beautiful😻 They built the seat into the toilet for less moving parts moving or getting broken.. all these were first built to go on sailboats ect, rough water. I like it, less to break. The crank on nature’s head also has the clip, go’s forward or reverse. And lastly your bowl is smaller on that one.. they also have a way to put a hose on for it to drain into a bigger tank or somewhere else. Everyone I know god with nature’s head, love it!
Just walking around the state park with my hand crank ice cream churn and jug of cream. It's chocolate. Want some, LOL. Thanks for the video. I didn't even know about the airhead toilet.
Just caught this video. Really well done! Great information and very entertaining, you guys are great. If Airhead sees this they would be crazy to not hire you guys as spokespeople right away. The only thing left to do now is to consider an off camera live demonstration?? LOL. Thanks!
Nature's Head is a marvel in marketing. The Airhead is a better design than the Nature's Head. The C-Head is a better toilet than both. Google C-Head for a third option and then make up your mind.
We also considered C-head, but decided to go with fan-vented model instead. We probably would have chosen the c-head for a boat, but since we will have a ton of solar on our bus, it's not an issue for us to run that fan!
You need to send this video to head (made you say head) office and they can buy it for their commercials. Thx, you saved me a lot of research and I tend to be on your side here. Cheers
That is an interesting question. I would have to honestly say no. The moisture would probably soak through and just flattened coffee filter and you'd still be faced with a mess. There isn't a good answer for diarrhea and a composting toilet. You will just have to change the substrate more often until you feel better.
That's all fine and well until the chili you ate for dinner turns into explosive diarrhea been there done that. Better to go dig a hole in that woods than clean that up 😆
That's precisely why I would never buy a Natures Head, because the urine is very visible in the 'see through' container, even as it sits in the bathroom. What visitor wants to look at someone else's urine collection when they're going in to use the bathroom?
ROFL! Love the demonstrations, commentary from the cheap seats, and straight-up good reasoning behind your decision! You two love birds crack us up! It would be hilarious to have a "robot voice" thanking you for your hot steamers as they hit the compostable 12-Cup coffee filters (those did look like the 12-cup variety... We don't think you'd want to use the 8-Cup version based on past personal experience with kale & other high-fiber veggies... Go big or go home!) Had y'all thought about building your own composting toilet before deciding on this? Also, now that you've had this toilet for a while, how do you like it? (Follow Up Video? 😅 ) Thanks for the comic relief (as usual...) - Brian + Erin
I’m gathering info for my build and I agree the AirHead is better due to configuration ‘improvements’. Just one question about the 24/7/365 fan ...... have you considered an in-line toggle switch to turn it off / on ? Or are you running to a single breaker ? May be (rare) occasions you would want to turn it off. Just a thought.
I liked the video. Some good additional points not covered by other videos I have watched. I wasn't going to comment until I heard R2-P2. That was hilarious.
Ok I understand the separation of the solid & liquids but where do your paper products go? As far as I know no one has asked that question nor has anyone explained that so far lol. ☹️
I just saw a review on nature's head that addressed that. They have a family of 4 and decided to keep the paper separate and dispose of it in a garbage pail simply because it caused the poo tank to fill too quickly. I was wondering the same!
That’s awesome, no one Wants to carry an open bucket of Your Poop or Anyone else’s either. I love the cover idea. Who ever thought of that, was brilliant, something I Could SeeYou thinking of Mike! Lol Nice Ty for that information.
Ikr? Like, does the Potty Police show up and right you a ticket for Failure to Separate...? No but seriously... I've heard other people say they have to add a little extra peat moss or coconut coir if it happens too much (or if someone gets Montezuma's Revenge!), and/or you may have to change it a little sooner if there's too much moisture in the "brown" section!
@@BussyMcBusface ive looked and i havent found an answer..i figured add more medium. But from what ive read, the damper the stinkier..i have zero experience with composting..bus looks great!
Thanks for a very informative video. I'm trying to find the dimensions of the hole in the toilet seat area. I prefer an "oval" over a "round", as I am a fairly big guy. Can anyone help me with the dimensions of the "hole" part of the seat in the Airhead and the Nature's Head? So very appreciated! Thank you. Marc
Wow I've been looking for you guys for a while watch your whole built from the beginning to the end you guys were traveling all over the place for some reason or another I lost contact yeah
@@BussyMcBusface I really appreciate Caries opinion and her Advice.. I have a wonderful wife much like her... And they have certain wants n needs. I sent this video to her.. To watch while I'm at work..lol. She laughs and thinks it funny that I research such things..
Good reasons to NOT buy either! DIY is way better and simpiler. Use a $5,00 bucket, a $15-20 toilet seat, a battery operated small fan (8" vent) Biodegradable bags for the bucket, biodegradable t.p. and wipes and a shovel. You can empty in a waste bin daily OR dig a whole boondocking. A man can use a 1 gallon pee bucket separately or at the same time, a woman can use an xl oil funnel. Less than $50, no smell, no mess, turn on fan for 10 min after pointed at the vent to outside. You can use some kitty- litter or a cheap bag of pete moss to sprinkle pre and post on the poop. ALL BIODEGRADABLE!
OH I have to disagree, this one IS better! You've sold me. If I get one, I'll get one of those. 😁 Oh and I have to agree with your subscribers, the hair makes you look younger, for sure.
I really enjoyed watching you both explain the pros and the cons, and, I now really consider that your choice is the best choice.

Watch the videos. There are 50 of them from the very beginning. It would take me hours to detail what you will need.

Jenkins, The Humanure Handbook is out of print but it is downloadable for free. It was our bible. By the way if I had an Air Head or similar system, I would paint the pee container, spray or paint a design, to camouflage the yellow colour. Great video, made me laugh. Thanks.
You made a great choice with the air head, cause I have one and no problems with it 😎👍
You guys seriously, I love your humour so funny, I have used a natures Head and seriously everything you said is correct, as it wasn’t mine, those points you have made did put me of a little bit, however now I have seen this one wow yep that’s what I’m getting for my bus an air head, thanks 🙏 really enjoy watching your videos seriously there’s just nothing fake it’s all real and funny well done please stay that way you are a beautiful couple love ya both cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Omg!!!! I love you guys. You have me sold on this toilet. I laughed threw the whole video. I need to find your video on how to seal a plastic water tank accidentally cut mine with my saw this weekend and someone told me you guys had a video on how to repair it.
HI, very very good Video. You have entered very fine on the differences. Really good. Thank You!
Lots of good info. I like the skid mark pads.
i hadnt even thought about that. makes a lot of sense. i am sold! thx for sharing
Fantastic, very detailed video. Thanks so much.
As soon as it is in operation, I promise we will make a video.

Thank you so much I enjoyed your video. I now will buy a airhead composting toilet. So much better.
Great explanation of the Air-Head , but that poop aimer bit made me laugh,.. xx
Their manual that comes with nature’s head tells you if you have a All in one shower? Drill a hole in bottom of urine caddy.. I like the fact that the urine has a caddy to hold onto it... a friend painted her urine container with roses and sunflowers! Beautiful😻
They built the seat into the toilet for less moving parts moving or getting broken.. all these were first built to go on sailboats ect, rough water. I like it, less to break.
The crank on nature’s head also has the clip, go’s forward or reverse. And lastly your bowl is smaller on that one.. they also have a way to put a hose on for it to drain into a bigger tank or somewhere else.
Everyone I know god with nature’s head, love it!
Ps I have been watching your build and it looks great....
LOL. Thanks!
I lost it at Expert Poop Aimer!
R2P2 😂😂😂 You killed me !
Very well explained video! Thank you for the information!
Nature's Head is a marvel in marketing. The Airhead is a better design than the Nature's Head. The C-Head is a better toilet than both. Google C-Head for a third option and then make up your mind.
They're all a waste of money.
We also considered C-head, but decided to go with fan-vented model instead. We probably would have chosen the c-head for a boat, but since we will have a ton of solar on our bus, it's not an issue for us to run that fan!
Big Tones, you're hardcore man. It's just money...!
Soooooo, the real question has finally presented itself. Can you aim your poop?
thanks for the explanation of these toilets guys.
You need to send this video to head (made you say head) office and they can buy it for their commercials. Thx, you saved me a lot of research and I tend to be on your side here. Cheers
Really well done and informative! Thanks!
I'm just going to say this. Would the coffee filter be more beneficial if you had diarrhea?
Go big or go home!)
Had y'all thought about building your own composting toilet before deciding on this?
Also, now that you've had this toilet for a while, how do you like it? (Follow Up Video? 😅 )
Thanks for the comic relief (as usual...)

You would never turn it off if you are using it. It needs the constant air to dry the solids as much as possible. I probably wont be adding a switxh.
I liked the video. Some good additional points not covered by other videos I have watched.
I wasn't going to comment until I heard R2-P2. That was hilarious.
Did you consider the Villa 9215? I ask cause that's my choice for now and I wanna see if y compared w the 2 you mentioned
Ok I understand the separation of the solid & liquids but where do your paper products go?
As far as I know no one has asked that question nor has anyone explained that so far lol. ☹️
Most people put it right in with the solids.
I just saw a review on nature's head that addressed that. They have a family of 4 and decided to keep the paper separate and dispose of it in a garbage pail simply because it caused the poo tank to fill too quickly. I was wondering the same!
Indeed! These are life's biggest and most important issues LOL... seriously, glad yall are happy with your pick for poop-n-pee.
How dose the sepra compost compare. Think that's what its called
Is the footprint smaller on the AirHead?
Just rewatching some of your old videos... Are guys still you using the Pooo filters? Asking for me.
We have never used them!
That’s awesome, no one Wants to carry an open bucket of Your Poop or Anyone else’s either. I love the cover idea. Who ever thought of that, was brilliant, something I Could SeeYou thinking of Mike! Lol Nice Ty for that information.
Great review. You convinced me.
This was excellent! Thank u both.
I couldn’t do it I’d be to busy throwing up lol. I’d have to have a flushing loo.
What happens if 1&2 happen at the same time?
@@BussyMcBusface poopoo popo 🤣
@@BussyMcBusface ive looked and i havent found an answer..i figured add more medium. But from what ive read, the damper the stinkier..i have zero experience with composting..bus looks great!
Mike Bwaaaaaahahahaha!!! You're quite punny!!! 😂
That’s impossible
Thanks for a very informative video. I'm trying to find the dimensions of the hole in the toilet seat area. I prefer an "oval" over a "round", as I am a fairly big guy. Can anyone help me with the dimensions of the "hole" part of the seat in the Airhead and the Nature's Head? So very appreciated! Thank you. Marc
Wow I've been looking for you guys for a while watch your whole built from the beginning to the end you guys were traveling all over the place for some reason or another I lost contact yeah
Omfg, thanks for the comparison. I was researching composting toilets.
Very good video
Very informative and helpful!
Well done.
Very informative and definitely helpful.
I think you've got me sold on this one..
Lol!
@@BussyMcBusface I really appreciate Caries opinion and her Advice.. I have a wonderful wife much like her... And they have certain wants n needs. I sent this video to her.. To watch while I'm at work..lol. She laughs and thinks it funny that I research such things..
I don’t even like picking up dog poop, so I definitely will need a black water toilet.
Dude got lucky af
Good reasons to NOT buy either! DIY is way better and simpiler. Use a $5,00 bucket, a $15-20 toilet seat, a battery operated small fan (8" vent)
Biodegradable bags for the bucket, biodegradable t.p. and wipes and a shovel.
Oh and I have to agree with your subscribers, the hair makes you look younger, for sure.
