I have a number of wool jackets and a blanket and I will tell you now that wool is not waterproof. The advantage of wool when it gets wet is that it can still insulate the wearer. I hunt in wool gear and love it as it makes very little noise when walking through the bush ,it is wind resistant and when wet is slower to dry compared to modern fabrics but as mentioned , it retains heat better. I go for wool every time, except for my hunting pants, which are usually Sitka or Stoney Creek ( a New Zealand brand ). All my layering gear is Merino wool.

I had a lamb’s wool jacket that I bought in New Zealand. It sure seemed water proof to me. Always just beaded up the water and it fell off. I loved it.

back in the mid 80's i went on a hunting trip in the Adirondak mountains. I took a military wool blanket just in case to supplement my 40 Degree mummy down bag. We had a few nights where the temp went down to !5 F. and I stayed warm.

It is true that wool is not waterproof, but it is able to soak up to 60% of its dry weight in water before it starts to feel wet on the other side. That is, of course, a lot of extra weight you potentially have to carry with you while it very very (VERY) slowly dries out again. But as long as it doesn't reach that 60% in water, it will keep you nice and toasty.

Wool works both ways- the Arabs wear white wool to stay cool, though it's a thinner lighter weave. Regular wool does a fair job when wet, but Merino wool does much much better at this and everything else; surplus blankets aren't Merino wool because of the cost. Wool also shrinks permanently when wet, and while most wool blankets are 'pre-shrunk' you'll still lose a bit of size in time. If you can't afford a Merino wool blanket, get the highest ratio blend you can afford and know that anything less than 70% wool loses most of the properties we want from wool. Not sure what ratio these surplus blankets are, and of course the blend will vary by which nation issued it as well as age; newer blankets have less wool. Store wool in a cedar-lined closet or cedar chest; moths love eating wool.

Companies such as woolly mammoth have some great sales on blankets. Much nicer than the surplus for the same cost sometimes. Altho I like my surplus ones too.

Wool has very good insulating value but it's water-resistant not -proof and it's not fire-proof, it's fire resistant (many military wool blankets have added fire retardant) and if you throw a wool blanket on a fire it can put out that fire by smothering it. Fire needs three things to exist: heat, fuel, and oxygen, take away one, no more fire. However, if that fire has a good bed of coals it will probably ignite the blanket before it can be smothered! Using water or dirt is a better option to put out fires!

Finding 100% wool blankets isn't hard, it's just expensive. Pendleton has a 100% 66"x96" for $180. Not cheap, but it is 100% wool.

Wool isn't even remotely waterproof. It's better at retaining heat while wet, but is definitely not waterproof. It makes life a little less miserable when you are cold and wet than other fabrics.

I don't think this guy knows what waterproof is. He keeps saying water wicking. He even said it absorbs the water. How can it be waterproof if it absorbs the water? I don't think this guy's ever been around wool blankets or wool in general. Wool is definitely not waterproof. It does hold body heat in even when it's wet. Also you just don't throw a wool blanket into the washing machine and wash it with Tide packets. Woolite has pods especially made for wool so it doesn't wash out that natural abilities
