- A heartfelt message to the fans:
Rob turner, drummer, producer and former founding member of GoGo penguin discusses his exit from the band and where his music will go next.
This channel will be where Rob showcases his new material and adventures as RT808.
2024 and the band never been the same, you were crucial part of Gogo penguin magic 😢
Honestly, I can't imagine GGP without your drum sounds, but I will be watching your new journey for a long time to come. Good luck Rob!
Ah that is sooooooo kind ! I will do my absolute best
Man, your drumming inspired me to listen modern jazz! It's a pleasure to thank you for opening new horizons of music and I wish you all the best you need 🤟
You're my favourite drummer of all time, there are your parts of ggp tracks that give me the shivers, they're so good.
I'll be along for the ride for sure and telling everyone about you
Well this is a strange day of mix feeling for me. My friend sent me a text last night from Montreal with a picture of the upcoming show at the Montreal Jazz Festival this June and telling me that he had two tickets for us to go. First when I saw the picture I though some thing look different. Did Rob changed his hair style?? So I did some research and just founded out that Rob had left the band. I said why?? and honestly was upset that my favorite band that I saw in Montreal 2016 was no longer together. I went on to listen to the new song Ascent and I didn't hock on it like I always did for any of the GGP songs. I own all GGP albums on vinyl and will cherish them forever as the real Go Go Penguin collection. I wish you all the best Rob and looking forward of new project and amazing music I know you can give birth. Thank you for all your existing contributions. Peace!
Broken hearts, best wishes to Rob
I can't lie, Gogo Penguin without your sound will be so different, but I'm honestly thrilled to see what the future holds for you and the guys. Looking forward, and simply thank you for music!
Well this is quite sad news to wake up too. I cannot understate how significant GGP has been to me, how much I love and appreciate the band. I found you guys entirely by accident, several years ago when Google assistant's "what song is this" feature was still shoddy and inconsistent. Funny to think I chanced upon Fanfares entirely randomly from a glitchy AI. But I was blown away by the sound, wasn't sure what to make of it at first, but kept returning to it and realizing this was something special.
I've listened to v2.0 and Man Made Object countless times. I've adored Humdrum Star and GoGo Penguin. I even did my first animation video ever for Window, for a college project (it's on my channel). Last Words, I Am That, Kamaloka, To Drown In You, Hopopono, Break, In Amber, All Res, Branches Break, Bardo, Kora, on and on the list goes, I seriously adore these tracks. You folks have defined such a huge part of my musical interest. Through GGP I found Gondwana Records and other amazing music. I've shown my friends your songs and they're all astounded. I've never had the opportunity to watch you guys live, but through the live recording videos my jaw has drop at how amazing you guys are. Just three artists connecting together and producing something impeccable. I dabbled a bit in percussion and drums in High School, but always was more familiar with piano. But at least having some background made me realize, woah, all three of you guys are doing some crazy skilled and compelling work. Your drumming was just mindblowing in so many ways, such a distinct and killer style.
I'm really really going to miss you in GGP, but am eager to see what more creative and awe-inspiring music you'll make from here on out. Wishing you the best and am looking forward to following you closely!
Thats crazy. I just found out about this. I have been a drummer for almost 30 years and i fell out of it a few years ago until i found your stuff. It re-inspired me to get back into it. One of my favorite drummers of all time. I will keep following your journey!
Thankyou
GoGo Rob! You have a great 'touch'. Keep playing and we'll keep listening!
I heard GGP first in Utrecht in 2016 at the Transition Jazz Festival and it was a revelation for me, especially because of the drumming. For me the creativity and feeling of Rob Turner's drumming is/was essential to this group. I hope we will hear and see you soon with new projects!! I look forward to it!
I stumbled across Garden Dog BBQ a few years back, and I nearly fell out of my chair. Immediately subscribed. The drumming is insane, couldn't stop laughing.
So, sad to hear you are leaving, but hey, wish you all the best. Looking forward to your new stuff.👍👍
Waited for GGP concert in Moscow for so long due to the lockdown. Sad to hear you're no longer part of. OK, now waiting for your new creations ;) Good luck Rob!
Since Ive been a fan of bruford, phill collins, Neil peart, cárter beauford, colalluta, but your drumming has been out of this World, so inspiring. I love ggp and it is so difficult to realise you are not in the band. Thank you so much for everyrhing.
Unaware that you'd left GGP, I went to see them last night at the Barbican - and they were great! Jon Scott has fitted in nicely. But as sad as I am to see you go, Rob, I'm equally as excited to see what YOU do next. So, rather than seeing GGP diminished by your departure, I'm now hoping that there will be two outfits, each producing great music. I can't wait to hear your new material :-)
We love you Rob and will be following anything and everything you do in the future. You’re one the best drummers/musicians that I have ever seen. Keep up the good work!
Thankyou so much ! I love you too 😆
Hands down the most incredible musical experience of my lift was being sat behind you in the front row of the audience at Turner Simms in Southampton Uni about 3/4 years ago. It was about 2hrs of jaw on the floor. I’ll never forget being totally transfixed watching you play. Best of luck for your future endeavours mate.
Good luck with whatever you do next Rob, I've enjoyed the journey so far and will keep my ears open for what you do next.
Feeling sad, happy and excited at the same time... There is no way Rob didn't have an influence on the soul of GP's art which makes me sad. But also happy and excited to see spark in his eyes for the future works he is going to create. Feel just like a GoGo Penguin album.
wow! amazing words - touched my heart - Thanks!
heyhey Rob, it was amazing having you in GP. I feel extremely grateful I had the chance to see the three of you play together a few times. As much as it is definitely sad news I also felt a lot of excitement through your video, and am so thrilled to see what is next. Always remember that we're all so connected through the music you guys have shared/you will share to us. Take care of yourself always
I don't have any questions, just genuine admiration and shared enthusiasm for your future. Looking forward to it all.
From Holland I want to wish you all the luck & good fortune in the coming time! I was really surprised when I found out just today that you left your companions of the band, but really think that you do good following your destination.....Surprise us Rob!
We are waiting for any new project and it is sad for GGP. Abrazos!
With you all the way. Keep the faith, feel the flow, loop us in, as you go!!
What are you performing these days? Miss your beats. Can’t find you.
Sorry to hear your departure this late, but really glad to find you here.
It was a bit of a shock when I read of you leaving GGP.
Can't listen to any of those tracks without thinking what an amazing drummer you are.
Though you guys separated ways, I'm glad you and GGP will continue doing what you do.
Hope to hear more of your excellent work in future.
Wish you all the best for your journey.
Really excited and curious about your work Rob ! 👊
Saw you twice in Montréal. I will deeply miss your presence in the band. Always thought the drums was on another level. You can be sure I will follow your future projects.
Looking forward to hearing what you have to share, Excelsior!
I'm sad for GGP but nothing is forever. It was your percussion that drew me to their music and now I'm excited to hear what you're about to do next. Gambare Rob!
Arigatogozaimashita John San !
Fascinated to hear what you come up with next
I'm looking forward your new journey Rob.
Just got back from a GGP show tonight and was gutted to see you weren’t there. Had no idea. It wasn’t the same and it took me a few songs to get over it but comparing you to the new drummer is futile and I’ll refrain from doing so. Will say that you were missed. You’re one of my favorite drummers and I’m looking forward to anything you do next.
Looking forward to whatever you put out, man. Please make sure to swing by Boston whenever you tour, in whatever form. You've got fans everywhere!
Hey Rob, gutted that I never got to see GGP live. I only came across your music a couple of years back but it has consistently blown me away with every new track I find. Your drumming is simply mind blowing. Very sad to hear of your departure from GGP but can’t wait to hear what comes next from you. All the very best!
sad to hear that you're leaving while your drum is really what drew me to GoGo Penguin. Will look forward to your future work, Rob!
I'm sad too. I will keep you posted ! ❤️
Thanks for the message, love your work and can't wait to see what the future holds!
Thanks dude!
I absolutely loved your drumming on Gogo Penguin, the whole band was just amazing. I would sit and listen to songs on repeat for hours, just listening to each different part in semi isolation in my brain, just focusing on the piano one time, or the drums next... I can now hear just a few moments of a song I've never heard, and immediately I can tell if it is Gogo Penguin from just the way the drums sound, or just the style of play on the piano, or the texture of the bass. You are all amazing, and while I'm sure i'll miss that purposely skittery amazing drum sound on their work, I'm so excited to see where you go.
Your drumming has inspired my playing for years. Never going to forget your time with GGP. Hope to see your new stuff!
What can I say but to thank you!
I am glad to see you with this lovely energy about this new phase, for new things to come, yet thankful to GGP.
I wish you the best of lucks! Cheers from Argentina, MVIII
So excited to hear your new material Rob! Your GoGo journey has been a pleasure to witness!
Thanks Em - wanna brew?
Im seriously shocked. As a big fan from Turkey i was extremely unluck that the day i discovered gogo penguin was just a week later their last concert in turkey. This was almost 5 years ago and i was still waiting for a concert. Its unlucky to hear that my wait wont come to an end. Im sad but also im happy that you are still very exited about you future projects
I just discovered GoGo Penguin at the beginning of Corona and I bought all records on vinyl, hang up pictures of penguins in my flat and I bought 3 tickets for concerts that never happened. I am sad you left the band and I can't see you live. But thank you for creating this wonderful tunes together, which are still a hugh impact on my musical thinking. "Break" and "Home" especially will never stop touching me very deep. Good luck with your new paths.
same
Thanks for sharing this, those tunes have a big meaning for me too. Hope I can make some more for you.
@@thmsrttg 🙏
Wishing you the best of luck. I fell in love with the music through that Tiny Desk concert, and your music has been in my heavy rotation at times. Haven't caught the band live yet (wrong side of the Atlantic and Covid), but I greatly enjoyed the virtual concert of last year.
I'll be making more virtual music - see you in the meta verse ! Some 360 VR experiments on the way sssshhhh :-)
Thank you for great drum in GGP for long time. I had good time with GGP live a lot of times. I am sad a little bit, but I am looking forward to your new music!!
I really love everything what you do in music 🎶 thank you so much !
Thank you! Will be releasing some new music here soon elftraps.com
Good luck on your new venture! This video is sweet and it’s obvious you really love what you do which helps me understand why I’ve loved listening to your music. Thank you. Be well.
That's amazing -
Good Luck Rob in your new venture which I will follow with great interest. Your part in making GGP what it was and is was huge. Still think at times you played just a little bit in the style of Billy Cobham which is praise indeed . Go for it !
All the best for this new venture! Can't wait to hear the sounds you produce.
Much appreciated - Thanks for taking the time to say that
Only love for you and your work, Rob.
May this new path be more than excellent and epic !!
Take good care and keep on !
Love right back at you ! Thanks!
Was shocked not to see you in Zurich today. All the best!
Rob your work at ggp has broadened my horizons, amazingly impressive. I will continue to follow your next creations. 💖
So many mixed feelings about this. Ggp is one of my favorite bands and the biggest reason for that is your drumming! But at the same time I'm super excited to see what you come up with next.
I wish you a great journey and I'll make sure to follow it!
It's not easy to see something you love changing. The feel of Gogo Penguin with you at the drums is amazing and I feel lucky for all that have been given to us. The memories of the shows and the records will stay forever !
I can't wait to see what you'll come up with and what is going to be the new Gogo Penguin feel.
Keep doing what you love ❤️
Thanks Vincent ! I will ❤️❤️
Man, I had tickets to see you in Vancouver and gutted to find out you won’t be there. The new guy has massive shoes to fill. I would give almost anything to collaborate with you :)
Hi Rob, years ago I discovered you on UA-cam. I loved Gogo Penguin and was impressed with your drumming skills. Thank goodness I was able to see you live twice in Vienna in the Porgy an Bess. And I'm even more happy that you signed a lot of vinyls. I thank you for this great music, the live concerts and the many hours of listening to music. And by the way, through you I discovered many other UK drummers.
(Yussef Dayes, Moses Boyd, Richard Spaven, etc.)
I wish you all the best for your new projects, but if you can do what makes you happy, it is always the right thing to do.
See you, hear you ....
I first saw GGP performance at a Snarky Puppy show in KOKO London maybe 7,8 years ago. You were the supporting act that night and I thought I was going for SP, but I fell in love with GGP after the first note that you played. I later discovered Antonio Sanchez and Mark Giuliana, and all those legends, but your drums has always stood for something special and genius for me in my mind. Good luck with your journey! Looking forward to the new music in the future!
Much love to you Rob and I am sure the future is full of so much goodness.
Wah!!!! Man you are such a legend!
Can’t wait to hear what you do next Rob. We have every faith it will be worth listening to!
We saw you guys live many times, and you were always fantastic. Looking forward to your new venture! Good luck!!
Thankyou!
Look forward to hearing your new stuff, best of luck with new music & new life!! ❤️
❤️
We love you rob
Love you too SQUIDS!!!!

Excited to hear what's coming next Rob!
As a lover of GoGo Penguin, the whole vibe, the percussion especially, I really appreciate that you made the effort to create this announcement vid. Looking forward to your musical progression Rob. 😊👍 Love from Australia
Aamaaaaazing to hear from so far away - always wanted to make it to Australia - one day 🤞 - you're welcome and I appreciate the message 🙏
Hi Rob, Feels weird 'cause I'm gutted and excited at the same time... Being a drummer myself, I guess you were the main reason GGP was one of my favorite bands. But I'm also into electronic stuff and really liked the remix album. So cant wait to see/hear what you come up with next :-)
Nothing is forever. I'm happy I could see you in Poland live playing with GGP. Good luck Rob.
That's so true - I'm happy to have been able to play for you - thanks for the good wishes - means a lot
Having had the extreme fortune of seeing GGP several times in Wales over the years, I felt a little sad that you have left GGP. Listening to GGP's latest tracks I can hear why you did. Personally I think you had grown as much as you could within the boundaries of what GGP is at present. If you do not evolve and change/challenge yourself, you wither on the vine. Excited to see your new stuff. I have no doubt it will be epic!
Thank You 2 U, Godspeed to RT808 !
🙏🙏 thanks
Good luck on what comes next Rob! Most of us I believe are here for the long haul and, speaking for myself, I'm pretty hyped to see what you've been working on! :D
Yaaaaaas! That's awesome ! 🙏✌️
Surprising news indeed, but you are such a extrordinary drummer and gifted musician, I am sure everything will work out perfectly well. Don't stop believing, 'cos I will not, and look forward to. Already subscribed!
Good luck dude! I'm indeed saddened you are no longer part of the penguins, but I'm sure they will continue to do great things as will you! I'm looking forward to hearing what you do.
Wishing you all the best on your new journey. Your playing and creativity in GGP has been so influential for me and my friends making music here in Miami, FL.
Hoping to see you play live near here someday 🤘🏼
No way! that's amazing to hear - Thanks to all of you - keep in touch
Thanks Rob - am sure what ever you do next will be amazing. We first saw GGP at the Wardrobe in Leeds a few years ago and have since seen you in Manchester. We much appreciated the time you gave us signing albums and chatting afterwards. You also introduced us to Adam Betts and TTT. So thanks for all you've done, we're looking forward to the next stage in your career.
Funny you should mention Adam 😏
@@RT808 You did a session on 6M a few years ago talking about your favourite drummers. Collaborations in the pipeline? Think there may also have been a segue to MADMADMAD however my memory isn't great!
What an amazing journey so far! Looking forward to hearing what's next, Rob! 😃
Hey Jem!!!! Thankyou x x x - I'll never forget that Worldwide Fest at Switzerland ! - hope you're good
It was definitely a memorable weekend!! Gilles sprinkles everything with magic, eh! All is well, Rob ☺️ wishing you all the best 💓 see you at your next *solo* show woohoo! 🎇
hope you to see soon with a next
We chatted outside the rex in Toronto. You were such a humble cool guy and can't wait to hear your new musical journey. Best of luck and we all know you are going to kill it!
Ah man!!!!! I remember ! That's too kind! 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Hope you're well ❤️
Good luck Rob. I have thoroughly enjoyed your journey with GGP and look forward to hearing more from you
Thankyou Pete , I genuinely really appreciate that
Since I first hear GGP, and it was an live event surprisingly in our small town, it felt like perfect synergy on music with and lot of unexpected positive feelings. I found a perfect music for living that time and now it feels like a huge change on something we all love. Same time I understand the need of personal progress and self expression especially in music. Looking forward your next projects and wishing you all the best Rob.
Kind words - much appreciated and thanks for the best wishes -
I will follow you from Germany. Great drummer. Looking forward to new projects.
Good luck for the future!
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for posting this Rob :) was surprised to see the GGP post over on Insta! Got so much respect for all your talents, GGP have been good companions these past 10 years and have given me the opportunity to see some amazing gigs in amazing venues. You're right in that music is a refuge and I'm looking forward to what you create for you and us next. Big up.
I will do my best ! Big up to you too!
Will be waiting for your new music! You are an amazing drummer, musician and artist!
Thankyou so much xxxx
@@RT808 thank you for providing us whit your amazing and creative music 🎶
Best wishes to you and GGP, Rob, from a fellow drummer/composer! Looking forward to hearing what's next.
Thankyou ! always nice to meet a fellow spirit!
When i heard the remix album last year, I was bewildered. I mean, i love it, but it was VERY electrónica. And when I saw Cornelius was on there, i was floored. I remembered that your bio said you liked electronic music (that's my roots, too, Orbital is my fav) and it made sense that something like this happened. I didn't know about your departure until after the second single that came out this year in '22 and I was wondering why the tracks sounded so weird.
You leaving is a huge impact. I'm sure GGP will still go on, but not with that flair. I can't wait to hear what you'll come up with. I always love what you do with the drums. You open it up without overwhelming the listener. Best of luck!
insanely underrated drummer. good luck both to you and the band in the future.
Love your drumming!
My drumming loves you too - 🙏
I was shocked. Alongside with Luke Flowers and Richard Spaven u r one of favs in modern British Jazzy scene. Excited to hear your new material though. Of course sad about GGP, but happy that managed to see you guys life. Honestly do not want to ask for retrospective, but as a drummer I really want to have short video about ur drums, sound choices and stuff (not interested in brands). From what I could find previously was only one interview to some music (maybe even drummer) magazine, but it is a bit outdated, and not detailed at all. Ur setup of course is quite unique sonically (with one of the ride/kinda hats with muffling system, and floor tom on the left and so on). Thnx a lot for all music in the past, and godspeed for future stuff. Cheers from Amsterdam.
AWWWWW MAN. Rob you made GoGo for me, amazing drumming! But wish you all the very best in the future…. X. Subscribed.
Amazing, thankyou! Hope to see you soon ! 🙏🙏🙏
Despite the "sad" news, it really feels so nice to see your genuine excitement for what is about to come:)
Besides, as fink says, from small beginnings come big endings..
Hi Rob! Looking forward to hearing your new music. Hope you’re well man. Cheers, Gav x
Ah mate Nice One ! Hope you're well too
Colossal bummer... One of the best drummers I saw playing live (the gig in Dublin was epic), I'm holding the ticket for the next gig in Ireland, for over 2 years now... due to the whole lockdown and postponing the arts industry suffered from.. It's kinda disappointing my next GoGo Penguin GIG will be with another drummer...
Just missed you in Edmonton, but saw you in South Korea and travelled from there to Tokyo for your set at Blue Note there. Look forward to seeing what you do next.
Thanks Luke!
Sad news about GGP, but I’m extremely excited to hear your upcoming solo/collaborative work! LFG!!
Can’t wait to hear your new sounds! Good luck Rob! 👍🏻
Thankyou Piotr - That means so much
Can’t believe it - GGP without Rob is like the Oscar Peterson trio with Oscar. All the best on your journey - you guys have been a real inspiration to me. If by any chance it doesn’t work out and you want to move to New Zealand and start a GGP covers band, hit me up… :-)
We throughly enjoyed your shows. So sad to see you go. Best of success in your new ventures. You are the new generation of talent and we are better for it. What is in Manchester’s water? I’d like some of that. ✌🏼

I am here for the RT808 record! Look to your musical heroes for inspiration and dive in. Get lost in a sea of VSTs! Tom Jenkinson, Richard James, Amon Tobin, Luke Vibert, Aaron Funk, Mike Paradinas, Adam Betts... and now Rob Turner! Best of luck during this next exciting chapter.
This is a most wonderful and inspiring message!!!! Thankyou!
This is big news. Became a huge fan of GGP about 8 years ago. Saw you live in Dublin , Pavillion then Sugar Club and then the amazing National Concert Hall. I went with a drummer who was completely blown away by GGP's and particularity YOUR performance in NCH. AMAZING night in Dublin that time, was an absolute honour to witness such emotion through your instruments. GGP will miss you and i cant wait to see what you do next. All the best. !!!! PS- Come to Dublin !!
I remember those gigs ! - I'll miss them too - Thanks for the support ❤️🙏
I saw you guy with gogo in Nice and antibes jazz . I'll c you without gogo! Waiting 4 your music very soon
For me the best of GGP is simply some of the BEST music period. I can't wait to hear what you do next. I'm certain it will be stellar....
