This movie makes Churchill look shrill and Eisenhower a walking stereotype

Seems exaggerated. Churchill had reservations about Overlord but was committed to it...

Churchill did put it off, for years, he was focused on the med and protecting the vital arteries of the Empire. He only went for Overlord in early 44 when the Soviets were set to advance all the way to France.

He raised his doubts 10 days before it was done too ‘I am hardening toward this enterprise’
      He preferred an Italian campaign
He complained about almost everything to Ike

Honestly the British kept forgetting one simple fact, if Germany could not invade in 1940 why would they in 1944. Especially with an eastern front.

    • @szahmad2416
      @szahmad2416 Рік тому

True, but no one amongst the Allies imagined that the Russians would hold on in any meaningful way as they did; the Eastern front was expected to be wrapped up. The Russians put up a heroic fight at Stalingrad and Kursk, and it was unexpected that they would be able to accomplish more than keeping enough Germans bogged down. Instead, the Germans found themselves fighting for their survival on two fronts.
Had Germany entered Moscow, and finished off Kursk and Stalingrad, the Eastern front would have been relieved and they'd have another shot at Britain again. And (with the exception of the invasion into Russia), they were certainly quick to learn their lesson and adapt/innovate.

I saw this movie. Did anybody notice that there was a scene where Churchill went to the American headquarters where a 50 star flag was flown instead of the 48 star flag?

Although I like Brian Cox as an actor, he however cannot give any other performance, other than the usual Brian Cox type of character. Brian Cox can only portray himself as the drunk singing Brian Cox. Listen to him as he speaks, doesn't even matter who character it is. He always sounds like he's singing a drunken speech.

    Not his best effort.

Why didn’t the allies ever try invading Germany from Italy? The militaries were already there. Why move them all the way to England to train for a invasion of France to get to Germany. The war might have ended sooner.

They sort of tried this. In 1943, Allied forces landed in Sicily and steadily moved up the Italian peninsula. However, they ran into steep resistance from German forces as they approached the Alps (I believe it was called the Gothic line and commanded by Albert Kesselring). This isn't to say that Allied forces wouldn't have pushed through it, but the mountains made casualties incredibly high. High command (rightfully so) didn't think that pushing past the Gothic line, then again through the Alps which would be even more difficult, was worth it.

@@neilcumberland6830The main problem was probably the rugged terrain, but another issue could’ve been that Switzerland didn’t want an army passing through their borders.

This film was a travesty of a historical drama. Idiotic is a mild word to use for this silly movie. I tried to watch it three times but could not get past 10 minutes into it, knowing everything was so wrong.

Churchill was overrated. He was a leader, a great speaker and a great man- and yes he was the best man for the job.. but his contribution to the war effort was overrated. You'd think he'd won the war on the British front single handedly. He certainly had plenty of flaws.

compared to who?, Roosevelt & Stalin ONLY joined WW2 because THEY were attacked , US involvement was DELIBERATELY limited (US Forces estimates of Manpower needed were WAY higher than what the US were prepared to recruit) and DELIBERATELY designed to impoverish the UK post war , Plus betrayal of the UK input to the Manhattan project?
Stalin? entered WW2 to carve up Poland, and murder the polish Army, then attack Finland?, Gutted his officer core, didn't equipe his tank with ammo , before the german invasion? , Didn't take any action against Japan until AFTER VE day?
Churchill was head and shoulders above those two

    • @neilcumberland6830

@@farmerned6 Just want to address the war-joining aspect.First, Churchill wasn't in power when the UK joined the war. He took office in mid 1940 while Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Second, 1930s diplomacy was very complicated, France and UK declared war because they (together) make up the democratic powers in Europe. They can't have Germany stomp around and steamroll democratic countries in their sphere of influence. Third, Stalin: Yes he did help carve up Poland, had the elements of the Polish military killed by his orders, purged his leadership, the list goes on, (not sure on the tank ammunition part, but maybe idrk). However, he didn't take action against Japan because that's what he agreed to with other leaders. Japan had a large force defending northern Manchuria and transferring the tanks, planes, and troops across the entire USSR takes a while. I believe the agreement was three months after VE day and, although I don't like saying it, to his credit, Red Army troops began fighting the Japanese in the far east.
