Met up with Kenny in person and he answered a lot of my questions and gave me some great pointers and information on competing leading up to my first match last year. I am hooked and have chosen to participate in the quantified performance series this year. To everyone thinking about shooting your first match, just go and do it. As Jimmy stated in the video, don’t be afraid to ask questions once you’re there, be safe and watch others. You will learn a ton and what you need to practice for the next match.
Truly enjoy the long range videos. Really helps me know where to invest and what to prioritize. Definitely going to cow town, they also do a Wednesday night pistol match every week 😎
Just started shooting pistol competition matches in Western CO. we have an outstanding range in cameo CO. USPSA, IDPA, and rifle matches. I'm going to be dipping my toes in rifle matches with a hunting style competition called UHRC. Thanks for giving so much great info, it really has helped me to get out my comfort zone and try something new!
I'll check it out once it's up. The hard thing with matches is we have to plan so far in advance so the ones that pop up late are hard to make arrangements for
Fossil Pointe in Decatur Tx has monthly matches and so does battle springs ranch in Oklahoma has matches wich is right on the border of Texas and Oklahoma
Heard good things about the OK matches. We tried to shoot Fossil Point but they wouldn't let us shoot past 600 yards so wouldn't make sense to compete in a match where you have to sit out stages
on mental errors, do things the same way each time! example, at make ready, open the scope caps, check optic is on or set where you want it for the stage, check turret for zero or dial for the stage, open action, then load. do it the same each time to remove the mental error from your actions.
I did every IWI match last year except the first one because I hadn’t heard about it. There was no issues with weather except it rained a few times. They put in awesome matches.
Even if you have the same ammo if you have different lots in that batch your point of impact can change by a whole inch at 100 yards I definitely recommend trying to buy enough ammo from one lot in one sitting to last the entire match
I’ve asked a few buddies if they’d be interested in matches.. a common thing is they don’t want to set up a gun to fit into a specific division. Wed all prefer matches that were setup for any form of “duty rifle”. Dot/mag, prism, lpvo, mpvo etc just run what ya brung. Less concerned about completion and gaming it but more geared towards real world capability of the platforms stacked up to one another. More of a social experience to meet others of common interests. Another issue I have is lack of available places to train in my area. That goes for all sorts of training. Within an hour of me no ranges offer anything beyond 100yds and shooting off a bench. None allow any other kind of shooting either. I’m fortunate and have permission to hunt across ~4,500 acres and can shoot a bit but it’s seasonal farm ground and I can’t leave targets out. It becomes a whole day of going, setting up and breaking down. I don’t have time to do that very often.
Just shoot whatever division your gun falls into and use it as a means to build skill. You can practice everything you need at 100 yards except wind reading and data confirmation. If you do what you can at 100 yards I promise you'll still be ahead of the curve
When it comes to keeping the same ammo, make sure it’s all from the same lot number too. I’ve seen different lot numbers of the same ammo be off by 30 or more fps.
There's like two ranges in central PA that go out to 300 yards and one that goes to 600 (New Holland, which is impossible to become a member at). As gun-friendly of a state as PA is (for now), most the ranges I have been too are lacking terribly with variety or distance capabilities.
There's also a monthly event at River Bend Gun Club in North Georgia. It's a little more PRS-y than DMR as far as target sizes and they way it's run. There's typically quite a few gas gun shooters though and they've been upping their prize support.
In between stages, reset the scope. Especially true if you dialed more than a full rotation. If not, may very well forget and when you adjust you’ll be off one full rotation and nowhere near where you’re aiming at
For the type of matches mentioned you can borrow someone's range finder or ranges are given. The type of match you've mentioned is different and likely wouldn't be someone's first match.
@@jimmybrodriguez True, it probably wouldn't be a beginners match for most. I've never been to a CD match where the ranges are given and borrowing is most likely a nogo.
But real talk the hardest part of your first match is signing up. Don’t worry about your gear (clearly make sure it’s running and zeroed). People will allow you borrow any gear you “need”
the QP match (Annual Bill Guessman Memorial Match) is in November every year, except 2023 it was cancelled because it fell on the same weekend as F1 here in Vegas. No practiscore links for it yet but when dates are announced I'll send you a DM@@jimmybrodriguez
I need to get to a dmr match this year. My group of homies has been doing a good bit of USPSA in the last year, but i want to start learning longer range stuff
Was actually considering getting into long range competition. Just wasn't sure where to start. This video helped me some. Still have a lot of questions though.
@jimmybrodriguez Well biggest question I have is there anywhere for me to shoot long range in South Texas? I'm here in San Antonio at the moment and not too sure of any long range places.
Great vid, Jimmy, I had one question: How can you best ensure you're getting ammo from the same lot/batch if you're buying factory loads? Buying multiple cases at a time isn't necessarily the most sustainable.
@@jimmybrodriguez right, I've seen that, but if buying ammo online is there any way to be sure, or is it just a roll of the dice and something to deal with?
@@shomu1 whatever you buy at once will likely be the same lot. Outside of that there is no guarantee. But buying from the same store gives you a higher likelihood of getting the same lot. I’ve ordered IMI multiple times and got the same lot number.
@@shomu1 I would reach out to the online retailer before ordering. They "should" be able to let you know what the LOT# and how much and how likely it would be to receive all of the same. I have done this a few times, you never know if they have a full case or are just throwing loose boxes together. I always recommend to ask.
@@veracitysolutionsllc Yes im not really talking about that. I am more so talking about the price of ammo. Optics are stupid expensive. Rifles. Training. Range dues etc.
In this vein, if you have a 13.7, 13.9, 14.5,, just tell them it's a 16 incher. That's how the ATF sees it anyways, and it will save you a lot of headaches.

Northern MN has a gas gun match about once a month! Located in Duluth and ran by DPSG. Only $20 too!
