Difficult to believe that he has been ignored for so long, that it taken so many years for his name to appear in programs and in newpapers. We must thank the people who made it happen. Fabulous piece.

I wasn't aware of this artist until yesterday... I like his piano sounds... really dense stuff...

Incredible, amazing. I didn't know this composer before. Just read an article in "Süddeutsche Zeitung" about the Berlin Festival "Maerzmusik" where Julius Eastman will be played. Obsessive, existential music by a black gay composer, wow!

It is sad this music was filtered through the lens of race amidst its ascent as these filters distract from the music. Hopefully the music mattered most!

A sophisticated piece of social observation, surrounded by the industries most mundane of machines: those that get our working clothes clean;to start on Monday.

Re-listening to this piece in light of Washington's recent decision to legalize same-sex marriage infused it with new meaning; I have never quite heard it like I did today, absolutely sublime. If Julius were still alive today (yes, maker of stone bread, it's particularly fucked that he's not and this story breaks my heart) I wonder how impressed he would be by the gay community's collective strength these days?

Seconds ago saw name on internet and came here.
One is reminded the piano is a percussive instrument. This is pretty and potent rather than pretty and silly. Piano performs as if it were a jazz quartet, string quartet or rock band.
    Appears his life was short.
    Geez.

I know that J.E. Was gay, and perhaps that is the Dame Edna connection. ANyone else have an idea? I love Dame Edna. My chorus just sang part 1 of he Messiah and Richard Mix was our bass soloist. Beautiful, dramatic voice. So I looked him up and found that a few years ago he performed Eastman’s Prelude to Joan D’Arc in Berkeley. So interesting-I am too straight or unsophisticated to LIKE his music but i do find it fascinating-like the piece with 4 pianos with additional pianists joining the original performers later in the work.

Not finding a Bill Paradise. How do you know of him and that the “lady” in the picture was he? Are you Scandinavian? I am loving Scan. TV series like Borgen, on which there is a Torben and another had a Torsten, I think; can’t remember which one. WHere are you? Even though corresponding with people all over the world is now commonplace I still get a kick out of it. But don’t worry! We don’t have to be “pen pals”!!!

Googled you-a serious, professional musician/composer. German? Me, lifelong (more or less-I’m old, but not dead....yet!) choral singer, from Byrd, Morley, Schutz, to Morton Lauridsen (teaches at USC) and one piece by Ives, which I hated. Bach is my Main Man, though! Mache Dich Mein Herze Rein-St. Matthew-heavenly. Wear your mask and take good care! (From N. CA)
