I have a ft991a and here is how you set it, it has to be set everytime you change bands or power level and some times for no good reason at all. First select ALC for your meter selection. Then set your band your operating on, then set your power level in the radio. with the right slider for wsjtx all the way up at the top. Next you select DT GAIN and adjust it when you transmit. Use the tune button on WSJT-X program. Adjust the dt gain until the alc white line all the way is off the scale to the left then some bring it back to the right to about a
1 or 2 on the scale. Some say nothing showing others say like me a 1 or 2 will give you a perfect signal. If you can't get it to behave slide the right power slider slightly lower until alc is 1 or 2 . I operate at no more than 50 watts power and qso all over the world with 50 or lower . But you can bump it up temporarily if needed but you risk overheating the rig and problems on digi duty cycles. Have fun with wsjtx digi modes that's what I do all day long thease days .

Did you mean ALC or AGC - if AGC, use the RF Gain knob to adjust. If ALC, there are several things that could be happening. First, make sure you've got a resonant antenna - can you tune it to a good SWR? Then on Page 78, it explains (under "Advice") that lowering the RF power using the F(M-List) function will increase the ALC and that this is perfectly normal. did this help or do I need to dig deeper...

Paul, ALC can be an utter pain in the neck and can be extremely temperamental AND VARY BY BAND !On yr 991A try to sit somewhere on the ALC scale between say 4 and 8. MAKE SURE YOU are on the ALC scale !.
CHECK YOU PC USB CODECS... mine frequently just BOM out and I have to restart/reload. I find that running in DATA-USB mode works best. Play GENTLY !!! with the blue PWR slider on the WJST menu... it is extremely sensitive, even a TINY notch can radically change things
Keep yr gain control somewhere near 35. I run in D-U mode, mainly on 14 MHZ. I tend to keep my RF gain control at Max.
Once you have found a "sweet spot" for the settings.... copy the whole lot into a free memory. It took me two full days to get Whisper and WJTX to run for a full twenty four hours without falling over.
But Boy... once she is going.... Have hit the FURTHEST concerns of the globe... over 18000 KM on 5 watts... my FT991A will not go below 5 watts and I have no time to build a proper attenuater. For me New Zealand is furthest away and I have been there many times. (ZL3TKI) I have the USA MMurdo Sound polar base, the German Fed Polar base... all on Antarctica. I usually get the Fed German base 2 or 3 times a day !!! Hawaii... Japan... Greenland, Iceland. Indonesia , Thailand, South Korea , Australia, and so on so forth.... you name it... been there.... I have given up a bit on Europe Since I plastered the map into one huge color swadge.
Can only say this: PERSEVERE ! It is a fascinating mode !!
If you need more help... email me... I am on QRZ. Again radio settings are important but the ALC control is CRITICAL. Do not worry too much about the green slider... it will bounce around a fair bit. But once you have gotten it properly running/transmitting.......>>> LEAVE THE BLUE PWR SLIDER ALONE !!!!!
