@@Timotarius_ Well you're right about the no merch and unlikely season 2 but most streaming deals pay really well breaking even with the production before airing, though HD streaming deal was with Disney and I'm not sure how they do it but I wouldn't be surprised if they got screwed on the deal as well
They need to renegotiate the streaming values because the blue ray / DVD sales model are too outdated. People have no motivation to buy blue rays anymore and often don't even have players.
We are living in a world where an anime like Heavenly Delusion fails yet "In Another World with smartphone" gets enough success to get a season 2. Damn, I never forgive them for continuing that atrocity.
Somehow the light novels sell *insanely* well among the English audience. J-Novel Club's president Sam Pinansky has said multiple times on record it's one of their best-selling series and even he seems bewildered why lol
Heavenly delusion was not one of those animes that was promoted heavily. I'm not surprised it didn't sell that much even though it was a great anime. I think it's marketing was a problem not the actual show. I came across it by accident so I didn't even know it was coming out That season. I seriously hope it gets a season 2
@@globurimChainsaw Man is still very much mainstream and stands in a very bright spotlight that will give it more chances to succeed than Heavenly Delusion
I feel like this is entirely the fault of the marketing. all marketing ive seen has been pretty bad, especially all descriptions of the anime which make it seem like a completely different genre than it is.
Not only that but the marketing was scarce, so many youtubers made videos about it saying it “came out of nowhere”. I never saw any marketing for it either tbh. It’s a shame they’re still basing success off of dvd sales when that’s such an ancient medium now
I remember when it first came out on Hulu, I couldn't look it up by typing in the English title. I had to Google it and discovered it would only come up if you typed in the Japanese title. That alone might have put another nail in the coffin.
Yeah, it's bizarre. The official manga in English goes by _Heavenly Delusion,_ and one would have naturally assumed the localized show would've adhered to that. Somehow, that decision was never taken. Was it a deliberate act, or just negligence? Who knows...
top 10? how dogshit is your list? I mean you should have excellent taste if you have a tenma pfp but i'm a bit bewildered (I did not watch heavenly delusion)
Bocchi suffering from success - Fictional band with 200k physical/digital album sales - Stayed at the top of Japan Billboard for weeks - 20k+ BD/DVD sales on first week - over 2 million copies in circulation - Successful Theater stage play - Partnered with Adidas for more Ryo drip - Partnered with Yamaha for exclusive equipments - 2 new songs - Recap movie announced ( I would still watch that sht) - Hiroi Kikuri spin off is popping off
The animation quality for the music scenes alone is some of the best and most accurate depictions of music in anime, since kids on the slope. Music is pretty captivating. Stories and memes aside, the accuracy of playing and the concert feeling does insanely good for the show. Simply put, it deserved its flowers
@Arnie-fn6ss thats not a good ecample. Beck is unsynced, it's a fine music anime but it does not top bocchi or kids on the slope. Thats why i didnt even mention it. They literally had to make cuts because they couldn't animate the playing. So yes. The anime is accurate from a technical standpoint, which so few anime even pulled off. That paired with the soundtrack ofc it'll blow expectations out the water
Wanna know why? Because Disney+ was the only western streaming service to license it, and those absolute as*hats didn't even bother to make a single announcement about it nor even translate the title. How many western, mainstream anime watchers do you think is gonna be interested in a show called "Tengoku Daimakyou" that's not even marketed? Seriously F*CK Disney.
Chill guys. The first season covers 35-39 chapters (the last ones were only partly covered) and right now there are 66 chapters out. So the manga still has not enought material for a second season, that's why there is no announcement aboute one. Also still thinking about dvd sales is stupid. The anime got licenced by disney+. If it's popular on the streaming plattform, they probably sponsor a second season. Dvd sales say nothing about the success of an anime. Thinking otherwise is like being stuck in 2012. That said it's not sure if we get a second season, but it's to early to make estimates untill there is enought source material to cover.
This is heartbreaking. I loved the anime so much that I binged the whole manga in a single night. It’s genuinely a super good story with awesome visuals. Idk how this could fail but so much trash sneaks by and gets new seasons. God I hate it.
This is actually a shocking news for me.. i don't expect one of the top anime in my opinion to be that low in sales Hope they can still do a season 2 when the story catch on
It’s was kind of a obscure manga that I happened to purchase before the anime. No one ever talked about it. And in-turn, no one really talked about the anime outside of our small community. I loved the anime, but I don’t buy dvds anymore. I don’t know how the streams performed (but to be fair they had messed the scheduling ALL the way messed up, had it in jail for a little bit), but I’m pretty sure it was owned by Disney, so I doubt they have any interest to keep it going anyway. Sucks..
This is part of why I hate the industry... it's just money and product merch. I remembered seeing a VERY slight blurb on this and started watching it yesterday. It's freakin GREAT. And the way I found the name was googling "girl laser post-apocalypse anime." Meanwhile, Crunchyroll loves hyping trash manwha webtoon conversions like Solo Leveling and the hogs just eat that slop up. So disappointing.
its rly sad that this anime didnt blow up like it should cuz for me it was the best anime of the year. it is rly incredible and unique rly sad i hope somehow they release a season 2, its unfair rly.
That’s insane. I remember learning this harsh reality when I was a teenager. At my local mall, there was a anime import store. I remember buying a Naruto DVD box set and paying a lot, and getting home and finding out that there was only 4 episodes. I felt so ripped off. On the opposite side of the coin. I once went into my local GameStop only to find an entire stack of YU YU Hakusho DVDs in the used bargain bin! They were dirt cheap! Like a couple of bucks each! A steal I tell you! I saw some guy eyeing them and quickly snatched up the stack. Another time, the same GameStop had the entire Evangaleion collection in the same bargain bin! Somewhere there was an Otaku whose mother must’ve traded in his stuff for quick cash. Because no one would bother collecting these overpriced DVDs just to practically throw them away at a GameStop! Everyone knows they rip you off.
Japan has long been too reliant on DVD/BLR sales. They often ignore overseas sales and licensing. If they want the industry to succeed they need to pay attention to what is happening in the west and work to license programs on more sites than Crunchyroll.
why are we still measuring on 2024 the sucess of a series in number of DVD sales when NO FKING ONE BUYS DVDS ANYMORE SINCE AT LEAST THE PAST 5 YEARS Its literally japan beign jappan, series could blow up worldwide but because "it didnt sell dvds in this neighboorhood of Osaka, so it means it must be bad" LMAO
This is so sad. I loved Heavenly Delusion, basicly binged it rewatched it quite a bit. Every published and translated volumne already sits on my shelf and I just passed the point, the anime ended on, reading it. If there was a subbed bluray/DVD, I'd buy that too to support the show.
I totally can't believe it. In my opinion , it's the best anime of 2023. I was really looking forward to a second season!. I just love this show so much that I've been keeping an eye open for their manga volume 7. It keeps being delayed now it's not coming out til August 26th
I don't know what it is, but every anime my little bro has watched has been getting another season lately. Seeing he watched and loves Heavenly Delusion, I hope it's a welcoming piece of copium we can inhale. Kid's got magic.
The show got zero promotion and it was a pain to find on Hulu since the English translation had 0 results and they for some reason split their shows into 2 separate series when a dub and sub is available on the app. Same thing happened to Summertime Rendering and Isekei Oji-san - zero promotion, scheduling hell and so on.
From what I've seen when buying on Amazon, some people in Japan prefer to import the western DVD/BD full season sets, because even with the high shipping and imports fees, it's still significantly cheaper than paying $100+ for a vol 1 with like only 4 episodes on it for the Japanese version. They're typically fine without Japanese subs or English dubs, so long as they can still watch it with the native Japanese audio, and that price difference makes it worth it. It's kind of like how I would import Japanese games from "Asia" region, where it often has English subs. I don't care for dubs, so I'd rather have a less "localized" butchering of the translation in games, despite the higher cost to ship/import overseas. I have no idea why disc sales are so expensive in Japan, when even Japanese people are feeling the costs hurting their wallet. You can make it cheaper so you get more sales, or keep it expensive so the hardcore fans of the show with money will buy it...but on the flip side, it's a problem when even the whales aren't biting. At that point, you may as well try to maximize reach instead and sell at a discount.
There’s a lot of factors as you stated in the video for the extremely low sales and I feel bad for fans of series because it might not be good news for a S2
Heavenly delusion is literally a gold mine from heaven( pun intended). I just love the story and characters of it and wait for more season to come. I would be feel so down if the studio gave up on it due to profitability or etc.
Personally, *IF* we are not gonna have a S2 because of this, I'd prefer that than having a S2 with a horrible production backing it. I have not finished S1 yet [still EP. 9] so please no spoils [I have seen enough :'')] but man has it been stellar so far! One of the darkest horse to have ever came last season. I am looking forward as to what's to come and S2 but as much as it would suck to not get an S2, I'd rather have that than a Nanatsu no Taizai S3 moment. I want the love and care to carry over to S2. But if the money is not there to fund that, then I'd rather have no S2 *IF* this is going to have some big effect moving forward for the series.
Heavenly Delusion is one of the best animes I have ever watched, the whole feeling and the atmosphere of that show is amazing and very emotional. If anything happens to this show or if it gets cancelled I will suddenly be in favour of the apocalypse xD
It's crazy to me that the industry standard price for blu rays of anime is so expensive. I swear I'd actually buy some if It was actually a reasonable price. The only time I can dish out that kind of money is when It's an all time favorite series like mob psycho 100. I know anime production is expensive too and they gotta make money somehow but even if I see a seasonal show I really like and want to support, I can't without dropping like $10 an episode. It's insane they expect people to just drop that on a mere 13 episodes. Even then there's no guarantee that the show will get green lit to continue, effectively wasting the money I just spent, and even if it does, there's no guarantee that it will even be as good as what came before either story wise or production.
While the manga is still on backorder on any place to buy it. I do sincerely think the numbers for this one is a slowly growing favourite. Best ive seen in ages. People I recommend it to enjoy it insanely much 😅
Most likely just wasn't promoted well. You also have a controversial scene and a plot twist that might've lost watchers for Heavenly Delusion. It sucks because I really liked the show, but oh well. Glad to see that Bocchi The Rock is crushing sales though I never would've thought the anime would do so well just from the first month it aired.
i doubt the more weird stuff had anything to do with it, since these are the japan numbers and they don't care. call me crazy but the price is definitely the biggest factor. for reference i looked it up and csm's was only 53$. which is less than half the price of this one.
@@Raizzor18 its about commitment. the people who would buy only the first set are out of the circle now. plus even if the episodes are double, the price is more than double. so it is still relatively a higher price.
From someone who didn't care to watch the anime but not by any specific reason so my opinion is neutral and from an outside perspective, I can say I saw way more hate than love towards this anime even before releasing and the main point I saw from people to not recommend this was a specific part of the story that I'm sure we all know about and how "unnecessary, uncomfortable and how bad the topic was addressed after the event" by their words. I even saw this kind of warning on japanese communities so I can understand why it failed because it doesn't matter how good an anime can be in terms of story, animation or any other topic, when you put something that will generate such a big rejection on people, it will spread and be destinated to fail.
Dunno man, I'm not the kind that disturbed by those kind of things but after watching like 6 episodes I just dropped it. Maybe a hot takes but this show is as boring as Maquia, they are just confused at what they are trying to show/tell. Like if given a choice, I would just rewatch Shinsekai Yori rather than finishing Daimakyou.
Chibi, there are still blogs in English covering BD sales weekly. Top 10 contenders often have less than 500 sales a week nowadays. Heck, in some weeks the top 1 contender is at less than 2000 copies sold that week. It's really barren compared to the past. I feel BD nowadays only exists for the fans rather than providing much revenue to most studios. The real money is made in streaming service contracts and of course merchandise. 645 BD sales is actually a decent top 10 ranker in the current environment. Depending on the week it'd be either on the bottom or even somewhere in the middle. Also since it's media mix, the revenue made in advertising the manga should be also considered. And unlike BD which are overpriced for a reason, manga are something young folk can buy. Long story short, the current anime production environment isn't the same as 2015. Back then shows like Oshi no Ko would've broken all time records at physical copy sales yet the numbers I see were like 8k sold a week.
Ughhh. The show is so good. Reminds me of The Promised Neverland. Kids by themselves in an apocalyptic/dystopian setting is such a a good niche. Shadow House is also similar to this. I really hope it gets a season 2.
One of the best anime I've seen. I can't speak for Japanese sales, but I can promise you that I WILL buy the show once it's released in the USA! For now, I'm buying the manga!
I definitely wouldn't want to buy 3 episodes of a show for $134 dollars. I'd rather just buy a figure. I already think the figure market is insane. I'm all for supporting them but come onnnnn. $134 for 12 episodes the full season would already be insane in the US. You'd be looking more at $50 being a reasonable pick up with a hopes for a season 2. Movies that are 2 hrs long or the equivalent of 6 episodes of time sell for $20... They cost just as much production wise to shoot, the disks don't cost more to make... You can't tell me that's not just corpo greed. Thinking fans will just open their wallets for it. They wonder how they solve piracy... bring down their prices... sure they have to print some more disks...but that's a negligible part of business and you'll get more sales, more people will be interested in trying your product not just the die hard fans.
Damn this sucks cus this anime was actually incredible. I read ahead in the manga though, so while I’d love to see the anime continued I have still experienced the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed Heavenly Delusion, but I always assumed it was meant to be a prestige piece from the beginning that was intended more to show what the studio could do with stylized art and a high-concept story rather than to be a cash cow that moved merch and took conventions by storm. The problem with shows like this is that studios can only afford to devote so much time and energy to projects that don't have a very high ceiling, so you never know long they're going to stick with such a series (although I hope this one at least gets a season two).
At the start I was like dam only 600 Copies . I should should support and buy a disk . Then I saw price without shipping vat &tax . I am surprised it sold 1 disk . I hope it comes with a good bag and figurines for that price tag
I've been reading manga and it's awesome. It sucks it may not get a second season. This was an awesome anime. It's story has some parts that I don't know is anime fans would be ready for. Stuff that genuinely shocked me and just had me thinking
@@Excalibur2 yes... that was way too tense. way more than getting attacked by bears and monsters. the way they feel guilt for being the victim. I was in tears.

The other reason I see this happening in Japan besides marketing was the fact that it aired on TV. People can record Tv shows using their own recorder/blu ray recorder, which doesn't give much incentive of buying a blu ray version of the anime other than support but from what I remember the blu ray was even more expensive than CSM blu ray (well you know economic issues why it got to that price)
Damn. I'd say this anime was my personal pick for Anime of the Year so far. Definitely had the most emotional impact out of everything I'd watched, and it had a really interesting story. Glad I decided to order the manga...
I haven't seen any ad marketing for this at all, like, the closest that got me into watching this was probably a video titled "MC really pulled a denji" Which to be fair got me to actually be curious what the series was about since it looked high quality, but yeah I've basically haven't seen anything else related to it even though everyone else says its high quality or top 10 for them
Why this series wasn’t as popular as it should have been (or in general): Marketing and Promotion. I can name on one or two hands how often (via different sources, Chibi being one of the few) I’ve heard about this series (and I know it’s great).
I’m not surprised. Didn’t like ‘Heavenly Delusion’. I was trying to get into it and was watching Summertime Rendering’ at the same time. What I found was HD was more interested in wasting the viewers time and SR knew what to do with its runtime. They were two similar series and had tonal whiplash but again SR (from a year before HD aired) knew how to handle it. If I had to explain HD to friends I’d call it the ‘Lost’ of anime, a series that thought it was guaranteed more time, had too many unanswered mysteries, spent too long doing nothing, had an unsatisfactory ending (for series one). I have no idea how SR did with sales, can’t imagine it did well, but I remember almost everything from that show and some of HR. I think a load of people were one-and-done with HD episodes, even if they liked it. It’s story *looks* like it was written for young adults going through tropes like the ‘Kiznaiver’ laboratory and all of a sudden all the kids got on the boat with Guts for a hiatus. None of it felt original and I think the same about ‘Chainsaw Man’ being a parody of ‘Parasite’. The only thing really holding up HD was how it looked and compared to ‘Chainsaw Man’ HD looked a load better.
I love heavenly delusion it's what I call a anime that is perfect for me I love all the scene I love mimihemi and the plots twist that the kids are hiroko and the manga is awesome too and I rewatch the anime like 5 or 6 times I love thise anime maybe some people too ❤ People who agree like❤
I think if they'd let out a little more story that the initial sales would have been much higher. Literally a boy trapped in a girl's body... that's got everything in chainslop meh beat.
My favorite series is the monogatari series and I don't own the BD for that series because they're so expensive. If they each cost 30-40$ I'd own them all probably the different versions too. But at 100-180% for a half a season I'm out.
Haven’t heard anyone talk about BD sales for years. I figured most studios didn’t care as much about it anymore with all the revenue from streaming licenses and merch sales. The BD sales were more of an add on than main source of revenue.
I doubt it’s gonna get canceled, I think we just might not see a s2 for a while considering the state of the anime industry regarding available talent mixed with there not being enough content in the manga
I dont blame the anime fo doing poorly. Even though the show wasnt as hyped as something like oshi no ko was, it was by far the best show of the season imo. And the anime industry should know by now, that they have to move on from archaic forms of monetization like blu-ray. How many people go to watch something on a streaming service that they already pay for, and then go to buy a blu-ray disc. Like, its just a less convenient way to rewatch it. The only people who buy blu-ray nowadays are people thar directly want to support these shows.
I meeeaaan there’s is also r*pe in the series that doesn’t impact the character in anyway and is literally there for no reason. Don’t get me wrong the anime is good and the manga is even better. I LOVE THIS SHOW but the r*pe made a lot of people drop it and honestly I can’t blame them. I just think if we are going to put stuff like that in anime it should be talked about and not just used for shock value.
They won't just ignore the streaming numbers. These companies aren't ignorant of these things. They know the industry is moving (has been moving) towards streaming more, so taking that into account, there's a higher chance of this show being continued. Streaming is big globally, and a gold mine for profit. These results just indicate that they should double-down on streaming more, and perhaps start saving more money on the blue-rays by making less of them.
Did it do well on streaming, though? Sure, Disney and Hulu have subs, but how many of those are there for anime? And with Disney doing poorly currently, how likely are they continue buying content that isn't of interest to most of their core audience?
poor marketing most people don't even know this anime exists and disney+ ain't exactly known for it's anime I didn't even find out about summer time rendering until months after it finished airing and only by chance did I find out from a random tiktok
I think it's because prices are high, we're in another recession with the worst inflation the world has ever seen, and people just go digital and think the series will just stay on a streaming service forever, when we all know in the back of our minds it won't
This anime went way under the radar. If my favorite reaction channel didn’t react to it I never would have known about it, so I can imagine the average anime watcher wouldn’t have even heard of it. That itself doesn’t even matter either since I had to pirate without Disney+ as I’m sure a large number of people did as well.
Physical sales in general are dieing sadly. Disney is stopping selling them in certain countries, and just recently a big distrubutor in the US is leaving the business of distrubuting discs for both both music and dvd/blu ray
@@Excalibur2 Yeah problem with physical collections are they take up a lot of space over time and more costly as a physical product needs to be produced, although it holds its value much better.
@@Excalibur2Collectors still buy physical. They buy into the series they are fans of through discs and merchandise. Besides, it’s useful when your favorite gets dropped from streaming or goes out of print. Streaming is great until you realize you don’t own anything and your favorites can just be taken like that.
not watched it yet. i’m definitely gonna have too. The issue is that, at least in my case, i felt like nobody was talking about it besides a few users recommending it to some streamers. Lack of promotion was certainly a thing.
Well time for me to read Heavenly Delusion then! I loved the show, one of the best in years! I got a retro feeling when I was watching it :) Still hoping for s2 tho !

Tbf Drifters promised to come back sometime in 20XX so like there's a chance. Also isn't Drifters as in the manga being a super slow release? I don't even know how much more material it has to work with. Look on the bright side Spice and wolf is finally getting a remake and if they do the whole thing. I will be a happy man.
It sucks that they use blue rays man. I don’t know anyone who buys blue rays anymore man. Sigh. I feel like it’s outdated method but this is japan we’re talking tho.
Blue-ray watchers are pretty much a drop in the ocean compared to streaming viewers nowdays, though. Basing a series success on such a minority number seems skewed.
@@thomasffrench3639 I’m saying that need to diversify their methods at engaging what a series is really worth. Time are changing incredibly fast. @@ezdepaz4363 this, times are changing so rapidly fast and sticking to just Blue rays as a indictor of success is going to leave more good series in the future high and dry.
Japan is slowly wising up to those poor BD volume policies. If the BD doesn’t have 12 episodes it’s a rip off for those prices. I agree steaming is a big factor to those sales. I purchased less BDs in the last 3 years compared to 2015-2020. With the convenience of streaming I mainly purchased BD when the stream doesn’t do the visual quality of the anime justice

I feel like this is entirely the fault of the marketing. all marketing ive seen has been pretty bad, especially all descriptions of the anime which make it seem like a completely different genre than it is.
What kind of descriptions have you seen?

Nah. Bocchi is just a way more MEMEable anime that's why it easily gets more popular.
The animation quality for the music scenes alone is some of the best and most accurate depictions of music in anime, since kids on the slope. Music is pretty captivating.

You're 100% right about the cost of BDs and also advertising/timing especially with the other releases we got this year. We got some giants.
I love this anime. The animation is on point. It's not exaggerated and definitely didn't lack passion.

Not surprised. Bad marketing = Bad sales. Was to be expected.

theres always the manga to continue, i already bought all translated tomes right after the anime aired
Damn. Thats actually upsetting considering how good the series is

Heavenly Delusion was incredible. Huge fan!!

God bringing up Rokka no Yusha hurt, I really liked it.
Honestly never seen one bit of advertising for Heavenly Delusion. Never even heard of it till today 😂
That’s my impression too. I’m guess that when the manga ends we will have another season of content.

Which to be fair got me to actually be curious what the series was about since it looked high quality, but yeah I've basically haven't seen anything else related to it even though everyone else says its high quality or top 10 for them
Why this series wasn’t as popular as it should have been (or in general): Marketing and Promotion.
I hope HD gets a season 2 this was the biggest surprise that came out when it aired and that opening god is still one of my favourites.
It simply had a terrible advertisement campaign. The only way that you could realistically learn about heavenly delusion was through UA-cam
I love heavenly delusion it's what I call a anime that is perfect for me I love all the scene I love mimihemi and the plots twist that the kids are hiroko and the manga is awesome too and I rewatch the anime like 5 or 6 times I love thise anime maybe some people too ❤

I think if they'd let out a little more story that the initial sales would have been much higher. Literally a boy trapped in a girl's body... that's got everything in chainslop meh beat.
Damn. This was one of my favorite anime’s of the spring season next to Vinland Saga and Oshi no Ko
Hulu buried this snow when it was released, even deliberately searching for it was awkward. Idk why, it's an amazing show.
I watched the first couple of episodes and found the pacing to be an issue. when something happens its interesting but in between.....
The only people who buy blu-ray nowadays are people thar directly want to support these shows.
i’ll never forgive the animanga comm for making me check out a mid idol series like oshi no ko
I just think if we are going to put stuff like that in anime it should be talked about and not just used for shock value.
and then you get s2 for animes like Rent A Girlfriend
I honestly don't remember any marketing or promotion for Heavenly Delusional before or during its airing...
@@Axterix13 dunno. My point is more of a general perspective or reaction from prior knowledge. No extra research.
poor marketing most people don't even know this anime exists and disney+ ain't exactly known for it's anime I didn't even find out about summer time rendering until months after it finished airing and only by chance did I find out from a random tiktok

People can have different opinion on what they enjoy but I can't help being disappointed with the anime community if good series like these don't have eyes it deserved
I agree and I want more like it!!
Rokka No Yuusha, Drifters & Akatsuki No Yona living rent free in my head every season they don't get a continuation. Heavenly Delusional is joining the gang. Pain.
I still has hope for Akatsuki no yona because the other one kimi no todoke also get a s3 after 10 years
Loved this series so far :/ but it ended ubruptly
Goddamn it heavenly delusion is one of the best anime shows that came out this year I hope we can still get a continuation anyhow
It sucks that they use blue rays man. I don’t know anyone who buys blue rays anymore man. Sigh. I feel like it’s outdated method but this is japan we’re talking tho.
How is actually making profit outdated? Animation is expensive.
I like physicals, so I hope Blu-rays never go away completely, but a digital purchase option isn't a bad thing.
My parents used to buy TONS of dvds and cds and they haven’t purchase any in over a decade. At least for the west there needs to be another indicator at the very least. I know Japan is different which is like Chibi said a gift and a curse.
