    Wow Shug, I can't believe that base jam! I got to see TOP live at Hal n Mal's in Jackson MS about 20 years ago and was amazed by the base performance in that song and you just nailed it dude. Thanks as always for inspiring us old fellas to keep getting after life. Good luck and a speedy recovery with your procedure. will look forward to seeing you back on the healthy side.

    The ONLY reason I came to watch this video was in hopes to see just exactly what a Woopie Sling was. Now I know. That sling configuration has been used in sailing for over a thousand years. Moistly for dock lines. Thanks for setting it straight for me. Here all this time I thought it was some kind of metal thing you bought. I don't hammock camp but I've always wanted to know what a Whoopie Sling was.

    Hi Shug, you are always so entertaining. I am a 77 year old woman who has slept in a hammock for the last seven years due to a hip problem.
    Almost everything I know about hammocks I learned from you. My whoopie slings always tighten up too much and I have to unhook them from the wall if I want to loosen them.
    Guess they get so tight because the hammock is constantly hanging in same place.

    Horizontal force on the trees (or your fence) grows exponentially the more horizontal the suspension gets. At 30 degrees, the lateral force on each tree/post is about equal to your weight (let's just say 200 lb). But when you pull that suspension tight and horizontal, you can get to a point where the lateral force on each tree gets many times higher. Not only is this a strain on your suspension and ridgeline and can damage the trees, but in this area (MN, WI, MI), root systems can be quite shallow, and there is a greater than zero chance of actually uprooting a tree, especially with those tensile type tents that literally ratchet strap to trees.

    I have had the same hammock for about 7 years now with woopie slings. Lately I have been having the same issue you demonstrated, but only with no load at all. If I try to make the loop longer to re-adjust from the last use, I have to wrap the sling around one hand and pull with all I got to get it to pull through. On the other hand, it works just fine to tighten it. This affects both ends and outwardly looks clean, almost like new.

    I’m scratching my head over this one. I’ve always used cinch buckles but I understand how whoopies work from watching many, many hammock tutorials. If you’ve hung your hammock correctly and have your straps at 30 degrees, how can they possibly be too tight? On the other hand, I can see where this could happen if trying to use them as a tarp suspension. The bottom line is there are far better ways to hang a tarp. I’ve always been a split ridgeline guy but a continuous with prussiks accomplishes the same thing as trying to use whoopies without encountering the problem described. But, at any rate, it was good to see a new Shug video on a snowy Sunday morning. All secure in Sector 7. Whooooo buddy !!!

    Shug there with about 15 lines every which way, tangled in Whoopie Slings. I don't use eM' much because they do not get too close to the trees...and yeah they can be a pain. Part of me likes a Whoopie though. I run the Slit Line, Button Links & Toggles & such: just like Shut said, "Everyone gets to sporting their own suspension."
    I like the Button Links in the Slit Line, 4 feet of slotted strap (Hammock Gear) for the tree, and of course the same Button Links can easily fasten to that too. It is so less mess & weight I can have two sets for big trees, snappers, clothes lines, forgetful minds & such.

  • @jeremywerlin
    @jeremywerlin 8 місяців тому

    Mr. Shug, you are a busy guy and I have a lot of ground to cover here so I will get right to it.
    1) Going back to September business. I have been volunteering for almost a decade taking teens backpacking. One of my students this Fall was a Twin City boy named Roy and, on a lark, I asked him the big Twin City Question, Know Shug? No, but he had attended a circus camp and your wife had been one of his instructors. It's a Small World After All. . . .
    2) For a decade beginning in the mid nineties I had a funk show once a week that I would DJ at the local public radio station. What is Hip was in regular rotation. In those days of youth the lyrics, So you became a part of the new breed/Been smokin' only the best weed/Been hangin' out on the so called hippest set, seemed to distill the essence of the good life for me. Thanks for bringing me back brother.
    3)Speaking of funk, my ear just goes to the bass. Every time. Sharing with you a favorite bass solo. Minute 6:55 ua-cam.com/video/NlA1Zl5C7UU/v-deo.html
    4) Lastly, it was just good to see you. Thanks for the video and all the work you put into these.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  8 місяців тому +1

      I know who Roy is. He has not attended circus for a while but I do recall announcing his name at student showcases. Learning that TOP song "What is Hip" has had me going back in time. Never ever would have thought back in the 1970s and early 80s that I would ever be attempting to learn the bass part. Never discount what life brings you. Even more-so as you age and take on the Funk~~
      "Take it to F" Saw James in NYC once. It was intense. Today I worked on Steely Dan's "Peg" bassline and Level 42's "Love Games". I've been working Level 42's "Starchild" for about a year and it is about recordable. A bass marathon but seems not as hard after spending so much time on it.
      Thankee for the good and kind words. Whoooooo Buddy)))

    Impressive bass skills, brother!! I started on a Fender Precision. Then moved to rhythm because I was a vocalist and couldn't play the bass and sing... the reason you don't see bassists singing lead. LOL Sounds great!!! Keep it up!!! Love it!!! Always loved heavy bass lines!!

But Geddy Lee from rush, Mark King from Level 42 and Jack Bruce from Cream, Esmerelda Spalding can/could all sing while playing bass so it is doable. Hoping in time when I am more comfortable with the bass I'll be able too.

    You have been missed Shug! As a fellow who's around the 300 mark, I can tell you that weight also helps making whoopi slings hard to loosen. I ran into the tight woopieslings one time. Had my tree strap as high as I could reach but they are daisy chain straps.had the slings in the first loop from the tree and my hammock was still too low for me so tightned the slings enough to get my hammock higher and had had a realy hard time getting them loose. The correct way would have been to put tree straps higher or better yet marlin spike hitch higher on the straps or find trees a little closer together. Ive got bad knees and another health issue that makes getting up from too close to the ground a issue with out something too help pull up on.
    Actualy planed on going to a solid tree strap and go with spike hitch but you know how it is I misplaced my roundtoit I think I may have loend it out to a friend. LOL

    I use the Eno Helios XL on my hammock. It's a whoopie attached to a tree strap. I absolutely love it. I like my hammock super loose though, so I usually raise the strap as high as I can reach. I'm also 6ft lol! I've never thought about using them on a tarp though.
