Tell your OM-System "handlers" that they need to come out with a new Tough (TG-) camera. An upgrade to the TG-4, TG-5, & TG-6. I need a 24+ megapixel camera that I can chuck in my pants pocket and wade chest deep through rivers with. I love my TG-4. I remind people all the time that, "The photo you CAN get is always better than the photo you COULD HAVE gotten." But 12 MP just ain't cutting it any more.

For me the one bit of photography gear I’ll never part with is the original X100. I didn’t buy it new, but was in to bridge cameras back in 2010 and had limited photographic theory knowledge then, ƒ/ stops and their meaning, sensor size and how that is related, it’s all stuff I didn’t really know about. But I was learning. The X100 though flawed was an amazing bit of tech. DPReview’s coverage of it opened a whole can of worms for me. A DSLR sized sensor and fast fixed prime lens in something pocketable was super cool. Wasn’t in a position to buy though. A few years later I took an X20 around Japan and when there I picked up whatever X100 series camera was then current in a store there and held it in my hands. And the then new X-T1. It was fascinating to see Fuji’s journey, I’d always loved their bridge cameras but the X100, X Pro 1 and later, eventually medium format. Anyway when I got back to Australia I found a mint used X100 for a good price, on original firmware, clearly never been used. I did the firmware updates and saw the vast improvement they made first hand over the original hardware. And it’s 12MP sensor was so sharp in most situations it was far better than the X20, even for distant subjects. A 100% looking perfect was a valid alternative to a mushy image taken with a longer lens on a smaller sensor. Anyway I’ve had many cameras since, X100F too, but the original X100 is just special. When I look back through my favourite images every now and then I look fondly at a particular shot and check the exif data, always surprised that it was the X100 that time. And it’s modeless design, where P mode is triggered by iso aperture and shutter all being set to auto, really made a big impact on me too. So for some it’s an old classic film camera, for me it’s the X100. My favourite feature is the smartphone like close focusing distance which when set to ƒ/4 is super sharp and provides nice background isolation for closeups.

The one piece of photographic equipment I'll never get rid of is my second tripod: The Manfrotto #161 mrk2 B with the Manfrotto Super Pro 3 way head. It is ginormous! Very heavy: 9.5 kg, but you can buy a special carrying strap for it (which I have), so tall it can bring the viewfinder up to about 3m above the ground, and needless to say, it is rock solid! It can hold a 400 mm lens stable in high winds. Love it!

Back in 2006, I had a trip to Australia coming up so in the few months leading up, I thought I'd drop my Canon EOS 20D off at The Camera Store so they could send it off to Canon for a sensor cleaning (remember, this was in the days before all the DIY resources were available). Weeks and months came and went and it still hadn't come back from the Canon service centre here in Calgary.
The only other camera I had worth taking to Australia with me was my 1986 Hasselblad 500CM with the 80mm f/2.8 lens. This ended up being a blessing in disguise as having 12 frames in the magazine taught me to slow down and reconsider if the photo was really worth it before firing off the shutter and only having a single prime on the whole trip forced me to work harder to get that photo I wanted. If I had the Canon 20D with me, I would have packed 3 or 4 lenses covering the whole 12mm to 200mm focal lengths and lazily machine gunned the shutter with subpar results. So besides producing some very stunning photos, the Hasselblad really help me hone my craft and discipline and that's why it's the one piece of equipment I'll never get rid of (if the lens/body/magazine can be considered "one" piece of equipment).
Funny enough, TCS actually called me as I was boarding the plane to leave Calgary to tell me my 20D had just arrived from the Canon service centre.
Great podcast guys; I look forward to every new episode!

I used SanDisk memory cards for such a long time. In the late 2000s, they were the gold standard in Compact Flash cards. I think around 2018, I switched to Lexar and never looked back. I have trust issues with portable drives, regardless of branding.
I sold a lot of my early gear to help pay for newer gear over the years. I still have all of my old point and shoot cameras, even the ones that no longer work. So I guess that counts for something.

Close to Chris's answer, I'll never get rid of my beloved FM-2, although I'll never use it again. After switching to digital with my D-200, I was hoping forever for a Nikon digital version of the FM-2, w/exactly the same controls, and only adding a spot-meter. The dF came out, looked exactly the same (from the front), everyone hated it, and I soon bought a never-used copy for 2/3rds the price. Way too many electronic gew-gaws on it, thicker/heavier, ridiculous Mode Selector, front dial and battery lid, and who needs a back display??? But, it looked like an FM-2, used a cable release, D4 sensor, and had a Spot Meter! I've used it since it came out, my favorite macro/landscape camera, and it's always set to Manual Mode/Spot Metering; it's as close as Nikon will get.

I actually work for a company that has a couple of apps in the Apple and Google stores for some hardware we support. Our recommended way to get the app is to scan the QR code on the product and/or manual, so we can make sure people get to the right place.
I have never used any Apple products, I currently use a desktop PC I built with an i5 12600K, an AMD RX 6800, and 64GB of DDR5 RAM. It's also water cooled and completely silent. Cost me probably $2000 to build.
Just adding edits as the episode progresses...
The 150-400 Oly lens being faster than the RF 100-500 in 'equivalent' f-stop means the sensor size has already been taken into account. The noise advantage of the larger sensor is canceled out by the OM kit being more than 2-stops fast in actual aperture. You still don't have as many pixels, but that's a different discussion.

I will never get rid of my Nikon SP rangefinder camera. A while back friend of mine gave me this camera (which he had since he was a kid) because he knew I was into photography. So, despite the fact that film costs are ridiculous and I'd much rather shoot digital, I still have to put a roll through the Nikon SP every once in a while. It's a responsibility but also a total joy. Most amazing camera to use, ever. It's a blast from the 1950s with TWO viewfinders built in, including one with 1:1 magnification, and the first ever titanium shutter. And, the tiny Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens is about the size of a golf ball (and admittedly is a Sonnar rip-off).

My first camcorder, unfortunately, was a Samsung DVD camcorder which I got because I couldn't afford the flash drive or HDD ones (and because I didn't know any better). It was atrocious. I've had 3 Sandisk memory cards die on me in the past 2 months. All of them were relatively new. I had one last year that broke my Nikon D800e. I was trying to pull it out of the memory card slot but apparently the Sandisk SD card had a slight lip on the end of the card pulled one of the contact pins inside the slot backwards. My camera could no long even fit an SD card in the slot let alone actually record an image. I had to learn how solder in a new memory card slot because of that.

Hey guys! Long time, first time. Great ep as always. I have an undoubtedly thrilling question for Jordan about codecs and compression. I have a GH6 and I was wondering, taking file size and things like that out of the equation, and just in terms of image quality, if you’re choosing between two 10-bit formats, what are the pros and cons of choosing a 5.7K 4:2:0 codec vs say a 4K 4:2:2? I understand the difference on paper: obviously according to the numbers, the resolution is going to be better on the 5.7 and the color will be better on the 4:2:2. But in real world terms, do you miss out on anything really worthwhile by having that zero at the end instead of 2? And do either of these have any impact on noise? Thanks!

Regarding the mention of Seagate and brand loyalty: I worked in the IT industry (everything from retail to refurbs/repairs to full business networks) and our returns/failures percentages of Seagate drives were significantly higher than WD. Seagate was also more difficult to deal with for warranties. Maybe WD would have behaved the same given all of Seagate's circumstances, but we'll never know. I wouldn't say I'm brand loyal to WD so much as I'm still anti Seagate.

Speaking as someone who Cerakote’s cameras, that G2 would’ve taken a ton of work. Complete disassembly, degreasing, abrasive blasting, and HVLP coating. The stencilling job looks like an awful p.i.t.a., if they were using H series it would have needed multiple oven runs, and at least one masking and re-blasting after the base coat. That definitely was a limited run.

Thanks for a great podcast! I really enjoy listening to it while editing photos every week. One topic that would be interesting to hear a little discussion about is the Canon RF lens eco system. Today, there is only either very heavy and expensive F 1.2 L-glass OR extremely plastic entry level F1.8 glass. Where is the mid selection of lenses like 24, 28, 35, 50, 85 mm 1.4 primes? At the same time Sony is rolling out a lot of great option in this category. Is Canon about to give walkover to Sony or are they up to something. Reading in different forums a lot of Canon shooters seem to be frustrated about this. So whats up with Canon? Is the prosumer lens options to be considered as part of modern camera history.

I've always wanted to see Olympus, or any other manufacturer for that matter, make a large sensor body with interchangeable mounts. You read that right--interchangeable mounts as opposed to a single mount with interchangeable lenses. No, I'm not talking about something like the Ricoh GXR, which used lens modules, but a high quality body with actual exchangeable lens mounts that could translate all the usual lens control information and settings metadata between lens and body CPU. Basically, I want a camera that can use any lens ever made for 1" sensors right up to 35mm sensors on one single camera body. It's not a lot to ask, and it would totally free everyone from adherence to any single system, which is the only reason that it will probably never ever be made by anyone. Heck, you could even add the ability to change actual sensors as well with interchangeable sensor modules. Then you could have your Bayer, your monochrome, and your fuji style sensors and eat your cake too...

Go try pointing your manual focus lens at the sky and focus on a star. You’ll find that it’s sharpest slightly before the end of the focus throw. Apology accepted.

    • @rudigerwolf9626
      @rudigerwolf9626 Рік тому

No need to get attitude. My Leica 21 f/3.4 just goes to the end of the focus throw and it is perfectly in focus on the stars. Same for the 35, 50, 75, and 90 and Voigtlander lenses. My point was not manual vs auto-focus. My point is that with autofocus, the focus mechanism has to turn beyond sharpness at infinity in order for the autofocus to recognize it has gone beyond sharpness and then turn back to achieve focus at infinity. It is the way autofocus works (contrast and phase detect). So pushing an autofocus lens to infinity (if it even has the marking and a natural stop) won't work. However, manual focus lenses (perhaps not all are appropriately calibrated) can be made to stop and be in focus at infinity because there is no reason to go beyond infinity focus. @@PetaPixel

@@POVwithRCI’ve hopped freight trains from Florida to Washington on the A1 and backed up all the data to the 4TB Sandisk at libraries and Best Buy locations along the way. Never had any issues with the drive, was even getting 250MBPS read & write speeds on a PC at Best Buy. This is another reason why I don’t use CF-Express type A...all Best Buy stores have laptops and PCs with SD slots and all I need is a cable to plug in the Sandisk SSD and I’m set. CF-Express Type A would require another dongle

11:00 It would be nice to also include a few off the shelf 2.5" and M.2 drives and enclosures to see if you can get a better value there, or maybe the alternative is that the drives aren't designed for an enclosure and they overheat.

I have an external NVME enclosure with a Samsung 970 inside it. Works great. I'd assume it would get warm if you ran a benchmarking test over and over again but in normal use it doesn't get very warm.

DJI not putting their app on the Play Store is really suspicious to me. The only reason I can see that that would have happened is because they were doing something maliciously and Google caught them at it and removed them from the store.

I've always used Sandisk Extreme SD cards, and the 64 GB cards have for a long time time sat in the optimal place between capacity and price, and they've never failed me.
But I haven't bought any cards for years, because I don't need more cards.
So I hope my old cards are okay and that only the latest copies are bad.

I've been really interested in the OM 150-400 lens also but nobody has them. I currently shoot the R3 and R5 with RF600 F4 and 100-500 and probably wont switch now but if they could've had supply out there before I got the 600 and R3 I may have gone with Olympus/OM System.

My SanDisk Extreme stopped and I lost one of my photo backups. It would cost more than $100 to recover the data and I was told that I was the fifth person that week with a crapped out SanDisk.

Magic Lantern is a lot of fun! Kinda getting overshadowed by the R5 and its RAW video now, but Magic Lantern on my 5D3 has some really funky video capabilities. Still, it is hacky and that has its downsides.

Could the SanDisk issue be related to windows 11 specifically? I just recently upgraded to a windows 11 computer. I could previously plug in my SanDisk external drive to a windows 10 PC with no problems. On the new windows 11 computer, it seems to get disconnected all the time.

The DJI app not being on the Google Play store is probably because US politics/sanctions. DJI is a Chinese company, so they might not be allowed to upload their app to Google Play Store. I know this is the case for sure in case of Huawei. None of Google's products (search, maps, play store) are available in China. In case of Apple they fulfill the wishes of the Chinese government so they can have their app store and iPhones available in China.

Keep in mind, the issue with these WD/SanDisk drives could be firmware. I'd be surprised if a name brand was producing bad flash, but I feel like if it was firmware, they'd have some way of distributing a firmware fix. Maybe they're scared it would be admitting fault.
