    This was exactly what I needed to hear. I'm in the market for a rotary hammer. I've been doing more jobs requiring one and I would rather own than rent. I could never find advice applicable to my applications, always being told to "go big". SDS Plus seems to be all I need. Thank you, now I can shop for the appropriate tools.

    Sds. Plus is good for up to 3/4”....it’s rated 1 1/8”...about 3/4 of the Max output is all you should use for bits...we use Dewalt sds plus for 5/8 and 3/4 HDU hold downs, works very fast and reliable.....anything over that we use a Hilti max...Although Flexvolt has a 1 7/8 “ coming soon at 13.3 joules...
    Great videos...good info 👍🏼

      Joe Framer I use a 1 1/8 bit on my sds plus drill sometimes and found that using a higher AH rated battery definitely gives it more power and speed. They only advertise more run time but reality is they allow for a lot more power also.

      Yup. Have had a reliable hilti rep telling me the higher ah is capacity only, but I think most users notice more power/torque also.

    Great video! You just took a lot of the mystery out of my most recent tool purchase!
    As a DIY’er, I love me my tools (DeWalt is my drug of choice). I just scored on a “tool only” deal on the DCH133 ($142, otd via Woot) and bought that exact Bosch chisel and bit set ($32 otd on sale, Amazon).
    My first use was removing carpet tack from concrete floors using that flat chisel and it’s ridiculously good at that. I’ve got various projects planned that will require holes in concrete and stucco; I expect I have all I’ll need for my purposes.

    Yes, for anything 3/4" and under SDS Plus works pretty well, possibly even faster than SDS Max depending on your drill. SDS Plus is a lot cheaper. I decent SDS Plus drill can be had for less than $200 (DEWALT DCH133B is a good example). Decent SDS Max drills are at least $400. The SDS Plus drills are not bad and can be pretty powerful. They will work much better than a standard hammer drill

    Great informative & concise video. Thank you. For commercial construction use with sporadic small renovation work requiring chiseling trenches in bathroom walls for electrical and or copper lines/conduits, is it better to get a the smallest (lightest) SDS Max machine and use an SDS max to SDS plus reducing adapter instead of an SDS plus rotary hammer. My staff have broken two SDS Plus Hammers in such applications?
    Between Makita and Bosh SDS Max which make and model do you recommend? Kindly advise. Thank you.

    For the home owner, it is usually cheaper to rent the big SDS-max drill with the core bit, than to buy it. You simply don't use it often enough to justify the expense.
    I came upon this video today because we had to drill a 110mm hole through a concrete slab today (that would be a little over 4 inches). The tool-rental places were all closed, so the usual method of drilling several smaller holes in a circular pattern until you've disturbed it enough to chisel it out was used. It took way over an hour with a normal SDS drill.
    About halfway through I hopped on the internet to see if I could perhaps buy an SDS-plus core drill of that size. The answer is yes... you can buy a 110mm core drill with an SDS-plus connection... but man is it expensive. It's almost as much as a new entry-level Makita SDS drill...

    Great video and good explanation of the bit sizing and their limits. Too many people buy because it's the 'cheapest" version but never the right size for the job. They mention core size bit, is that to say an SDS Max can core a hole up to 6 " and drill a 1 3/4" hole. What would be a hole sizing using an SDS Max Drill?

    • @WorkshopAddict

    To confuse everyone but a necessary piece of information... Bosch also makes a bulldog extreme max that accepts sds plus bits up to 1-1/8 diameter. The Bosch sds max is the larger drill Styled like the Hilti and accepts the much larger max shanks and bits..... not the bulldog max series. Why they used the max terminology in both products is beyond me. Many people have bought that drill thinking their getting its larger brother performance.

    • @WorkshopAddict

    Do you know of an adapter that would allow SDS-Max bits to be used on a SDS-Plus tool? I have a lot of nice chisel and point bits for my DeWalt SDS-Max demo hammer that I would like to occasionally use on my smaller SDS-Plus rotary hammer. I recall seeing adapters to use SDS-Plus bits on SDS-Max tool but not the other way around.

    • @eosjoe565
      @eosjoe565 6 років тому +1

      Yep! I know it sounds silly but I only need to use the bits once in a while on the SDS-Plus tool. I even have a nice SDS-Max spade digging tool that would be nice to use. Normally, with most adapters, using bigger gizmos on a smaller tool (i.e. 1/2" sockets on 3/8" ratchet) is more common as you don't have to worry about breakage. So it's odd that they have adapters to use the small SDS-Plus bits on giant SDS-Max tools. :-)

      EOSJOE no, he sez thats not available b/c sds has less hammering power which is why they dont make the sds bits in the larger sizes to begin with. Get the bigger hammer and the adapter to use sds in sds max

    • @eosjoe565
      @eosjoe565 6 років тому

      That's not the issue. I already have a large DeWalt SDS-MAX 23 lb. demo hammer. I have a lot of nice chisel, point and spade tool bits. I also have a SDS-Plus tool. I would love to use my SDS-MAX chisel and spade bits without having to go out and buy a new set of SDS-Plus bits. The bits I have are the same size as their SDS-Plus counter parts. The only difference is the shaft. If there is an adapter to use smaller SDS-Plus on a big SDS-MAX tool (which to me would risk damaging the smaller bits), why isn't there an adapter to use the larger shanked SDS-MAX bits in the SDS-Plus tool? There is no risk of breaking anything when you use a large bit on a small tool. It's like using a 1/2" socket adapter on a 3/8" ratchet... no damage. But use a 3/8" adapter on a 1/2" ratchet and you can break something. :-)

    Can you use the most common/typical drill bits inside of an SDS drill? I can't find this information ANYWHERE

    It’s not the bit size that you choose it’s the machine size you choose. That’s how you pick a machine.

    Can you use sds and SDS plus bits in a SDS max drill?

    Thank you for the post! I know my comment isn't related to this video, but I'm hoping you'd be willing to help me out. I often have to drill through concrete walls at least 10" thick. I use a rotary hammer drill with a 5/8 and 1/2 drill bits and I'm blowing out the other side of the wall even with the 5/8 bit. What's the best way to drill a 3/4 core hole and keep it clean without damaging the surface of the wall for mounting purposes?

      Coring machine man. Hilti has a selection over the years, and you can prob find them used. And I've seen off-brand machines as well. I'd think harbor freight has'm, if ya don't want to spend 1000s for a new Hilti.

      I'm thinking more about what you actually asked. Seems a coring bit is too big. If I was worried about blowing out the other side of the wall (which I do understand why you could be concerned), I think I'd try putting a search bit through, ie; 3/8" etc, then use your 3/4" on the inside where you don't want it blowing out, then outside to drill your 3/4 hole. To me it seems it won't blast concrete/stone shrapnel that way.

      @@Squillaempusa. I take it that your terminology of a search bit is the same as drilling a pilot hole before using the actual bit size needed to make the permanent hole? If so, we tried using a smaller bit first, but for some reason it still blows out the other side of the wall. We're using a rotary hammer drill and I'm thinking it's the hammer that's causing the damage when it punches through the other side. That's why I was hoping that if we used a core bit that it would give us a much cleaner ending result.

      Yea, search bit/pilot bit. What about using a coring bit/cup bit for rotary hammer (lined up with pilot hole) on inside wall where you're having it blow out to kinda score the wall. I'm wondering if the blow out will be contained to inside of the cup bit hole. I feel like I'm rambling. Anyway, I agree that a coring machine would do much better, but you're looking at spending some loot. Not sure what your situation is. We use one a few times a year, when going through brick or a deep concrete wall, but only when we need a 2-3" hole. Not sure about less than 1".

      I do hvac, obviously I'm not a concrete guy. So take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. I have gone through concrete, brick, and stone many many times, but not terribly concerned about the blow out (as long as no one gets hit by the chunks flying), since it's usually in a basement out of sight. Plus we usually sleeve the hole and patch around it with silicone or furnace cement.
