Unfortunately, I didn't quit soon enough. Now surviving Stage IV laryngeal cancer. But the good news? Didn't effect my ears or my playing. Glad to know you quit Tom. It's tough I know. I quit 197 times. best success with that. And it will bring you many more years of composing.
Hi Tom, first of all I am very thankful to you for sharing all this information to all of us, I would like to ask a question if it would be possible for you to add in your upcoming Q and A sessions, and that is how do you manage all the data that you have gathered over the years(for example your sample libraries, sounds etc) and what is your computer setup for scoring( computer specs and if you are using host and slave machines then what would be the ideal way of doing it for film scoring) once again-Thank you very much... Good Luck and Cheers for your upcoming projects!!!
When he lit his cigarette halfway into his performance while mixing and filtering, it put a great smile on my face! I'm glad he quit smoking for 4 years now if I'm correct, I really like and respect the man.
I see there is a video from 4 years after this where Tom says he’s selling his gear and explains why - I bet he’s going live in a yurt and play the sitar instead. P E A C E : )
Absolutely incredible. One of the best UA-cam videos I've ever seen. Your awareness of pace, and having the patience to allow themes to develop, is an inspiration!
Modular is good. Smoking is bad. €100k is what I wish I had. Thanks for the time and effort to make stuff like this. This is high quality UA-cam. It doesn't get much better than this!!
A little late, but never too late to show some love for your craftmanship and humble honesty. Great sounds and great studio you have! thanks for sharing . cheers
As a fellow artist, I must accept your assertion that this is an “unfinished” piece. But HOT DAMN, that’s some EPIC f***in’ around! That loose, rattling bass sound that you introduce around 13:25…🤯. I’m saying this after a listen through my tiny iPhone speakers…can’t wait to run it through my hifi!
Math pop quiz: Determine how many unique combinations are possible with this setup. A hint: It's more than your brain can comprehend. Patching and tweaking for a trillion years you would still never exhaust all the possible combinations/values. Yet these potential sounds are already there living in the wall, always already waiting on you to release them into the wild. Long live JunkieXL!
Well sure, but you don't need a whole wall of synths to achieve that, you can walk through a couple city streets and no doubt record more sounds than you could ever practically use. In fact, just wander into your kitchen and there is a huge host of interesting sounds that you can use. I guess the moral is, a wall full of synths is nice, pretty damn awesome in fact, but you can get just as many combinations of sounds in many other places too, often for free assuming you have some form of microphone.
the 5u modulars are not that complicated, I can't wait for the eurorack one because that can really have a crazy amount of possibilities but this big wall is simpler than you think
I feel like my interest in modular isn't quite valued by a lot of people (as a kid in Colorado), but this video inspired me to start a 5u system anyway. Thanks!
Junkie I really enjoyed this! BECAUSE you did this in a non planned non produced fashion. I wish everyone understood how important this part of our craft is ! And how much a simple recording of a performance like this is! GREAT! Peace Christo
Such a dreamy sequence. We live in the golden age of music with all the available instruments and yet the mainstream sound is such garbage. Anybody who like this I applaud you. You are a better human being.
I just learned about modular synth a few days ago. I never really knew about this. Now im an addict with not enough money for my synth mods. Im glad I can learn with VCV software for free.
Tom! You are a savior for those of us who will never have the opportunity to actually even see these synth and experience live. I almost can't as I live where things are kind of obliterated. You are the best tutor out there who shares his creative stuff with us FOR FREE. We are in debt thankful to you and can't repay. A request though. Some of us cannot buy those expensive tutorials to watch the creative process so can you please invite your friend Mr. Hans Zimmer who could show some of his tips and tricks in a casual way just like you? It will be good to see how pros like you and him collaborate. May be an idea to invite your RC friends like Alan Meyerson or others, just saying. Thank you again.
ed enam where the hell do you live man? Haha come on over to the USA you can buy all the shit you want lol but don't worry limiting circumstances can lead to extra creativity and new possibilities. Use what's around you.
Hi Tom, really cool performance on the modular wall. Some of the rhythms sound really complex but also fluent. Reminds me of Tangerine Dream. Excellent job and demo!
Sure would have been nice sitting in the studio during the '60's with a little blu cheer and a Hookah. Sounds are way more intense than a Moog of that era. Nice Tom. Love to get a sample library of some of your modular synth patches.
My gosh Tom thank you so much for sharing this. What a amazing experience into the modular wall you have there and I sure understand you record them for later usage in your movie work, at 7:04 you have a great experience, some big drums in between to compose.. Definite some new recordings that you can use for your compositions. Have a great weekend from a sunny Holland. Cheers Ray (Floatwithme) !
This is sooo great!I will enjoy this again with a cigarette and a glas of red wine ;-)Unbelievable that you did this live with a modular!Thank you VERY much for your videos.
Holy moly, thank you Junkie XL,amazing insght of a topic im slightly less intimidated by now,and feel its time to move on to more organic home made synthesis, amazing Sir,your studio is a force to be reconed with! Peace
Such a fantastic performance, it got my juices flowing and I need to lock myself in my own studio tonight to sketch out some ideas this inspired. Oh no! You started smoking again! Keep trying to quit you will thank your self in the end.
agree and tom you are being to modest :) The performance was very organic, it felt like the machine became self aware when you started playing .. well back to my matrixbrute...ehm
Would love to see an MWP again sometime! Growing up, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to Tangerine Dream and JMJ's Oxygene at a young age. and I still can't get enough of this stuff This was wonderful!
Wow!!!!! Amazing performance!!!!! I’ve just begun experimenting with synths and sound design. I’m glad that I’m starting of at the beginning with more modular stuff so I can later understand the more complex designs hopefully! These vids are awesome and an inspiration!!!
Wow... some amazing sounds in there... well put together too! There is a distinct difference between doing live modular, modular sound design and the varying levels you can use each depending on what your sonic goals are at the time.
Excellent performance Tom. It has been a long time since I have seen a good modular performance. I love how you master the modular, many years of experience in that I am sure. Great Berlin school there and love the cig and wine :)
Wow, that was awesome, Tom! Practically album ready! I really enjoyed your performance and the last few minutes made me think of Tim Blake's Crystal Machine album. Thanks for sharing!
Wow this reminds me of those computers from old movies from the 60s and 70s with them knobs and blinking lights. All that is missing are the big reel to reel tape drives.
Klaus Schulze or an early Tangerine Dream would be happy with that one. Impressive use of bass. Nice. Some of the sounds remind me strongly of Interstellar.
As someone who is an electronic music enthusiast since childhood, I enjoyed this performance more than the finished soundtracks. you shuld make an experimental electronic music album :)
This was recorded 6 months ago when I was still smoking!! I have quit for 3 months now!
Junkie XL it confused me, haha. BTW, how are you liking the Matrixbrute?
Congratulations! Keep it up!

Best decision ever :) Was worried you might melt through a patch cable for a moment :/
Says it not a complete modular performance. Outperforms everybody 🔥
When he lit his cigarette halfway into his performance while mixing and filtering, it put a great smile on my face!
I'm glad he quit smoking for 4 years now if I'm correct, I really like and respect the man.
I see so many awful modular performances you forget how good it can be. This is great.
This is STILL my absolutely favorite studio time video of all time! I keep coming back here to watch and share!
sorry, I've had a couple of Rums.
but, watching this, this is a man who knows what every knob does. mesmerising!!
I see there is a video from 4 years after this where Tom says he’s selling his gear and explains why - I bet he’s going live in a yurt and play the sitar instead.

If software i enough for you, check this out: vcvrack.com/
A little late, but never too late to show some love for your craftmanship and humble honesty. Great sounds and great studio you have! thanks for sharing . cheers
That was way more musical than most of the modular videos on YT.
I really appreciate that you always make time to do videos for us on a regular basis. You're amazing!!

golf-freq neurology (?) pop quiz: how many sounds on this wall can we distinguish?
Well sure, but you don't need a whole wall of synths to achieve that, you can walk through a couple city streets and no doubt record more sounds than you could ever practically use. In fact, just wander into your kitchen and there is a huge host of interesting sounds that you can use.

Let's ask Multivac, I'm scared...
Damn, I wonder how many possibilities software has then.
Sounds pretty close to a finished perforrmance to me - bloddy amazing!
JunkieXL is not creating sound with his synth wall..he is connecting us to the matrix of his mind.
i aM cOnNeCtEd
Hope you enjoy this video! Check out the previous tutorial on modular synthesis if you've not done so!

This distorted (ring modulated?) sequence in 24:30 is a brain massage for me :)
sounds great
---> 19:04 --> down-right corner, camera guy --> that moment when your life flashes on the right soundtrack
It was made more dramatic with the Junkie XL score in real time. Good catch hah!
OH MY GOODNESS. i had a mini heart attack
Bikk Bones Waas it a mini moog heart attack ?
sorry, i had too..
A very good performance! This is so much harder to do than it looks. Outstanding skill and planning.
And all this, despite of (in his own words) 'just find some sounds and loops'...........it's become a timeless composition!
Awesome work Tom. Thank you for opening your amazing studio and educating us and performing real-time. Solid.
Really a great performance; the music is very creative and so artistic. I love the "Berlin Schule".
Probably best and most enjoyable modular performance to see on internet to current date... Loved every bit of it.
Anything ressembling JMJ's Arpeggiator can only please my ears :) Thank you Tom, you are awesome.
Tom, ieder land heeft zijn synth helden, en ondanks dat je tegenwoordig in de states woont, jij bent en blijft DE Nederlandse synthesizer held!
Amazing patch!
Such a dreamy sequence.
We live in the golden age of music with all the available instruments and yet the mainstream sound is such garbage.
Anybody who like this I applaud you. You are a better human being.
so much respect. im loving the synths and the journey!! this was absolutely beautifull|!!
Top Tom! Great performance, really enjoy the polyrhythmic flowing elements. Reminds me indeed of good old Tangerine Dream.
This takes me back to the 'NODE' albums... gorgeous.
Super nice! Inspired me to go home and jam
Put in on vinyl and it will sell! Great video and thanks for sharing your musical brain with us.
Wonderful, it is a joy to see the love you put in this video.
I just learned about modular synth a few days ago. I never really knew about this. Now im an addict with not enough money for my synth mods. Im glad I can learn with VCV software for free.
Well done, you know what you're doing. Hats off!

Hi Tom, really cool performance on the modular wall. Some of the rhythms sound really complex but also fluent. Reminds me of Tangerine Dream. Excellent job and demo!
Some very nice classic Tangerine Dream vibes here. Well done Tom!
Sure would have been nice sitting in the studio during the '60's with a little blu cheer and a Hookah. Sounds are way more intense than a Moog of that era. Nice Tom. Love to get a sample library of some of your modular synth patches.
simply amazing...stunning!
This calms me down. Absolutely love it! Reminds me to Klaus Schulze.

Tom, thank you very very much for this!
Tom, wow... This is what it looks like creating a True Analog Ambient Soundtrack... Amazingly Awesome. Thank you :)
Hats off to the cinematographer here. he had the aperture wide open and there DoF was super shallow. Nice job trying to keep junkie in focus...
Holy moly, thank you Junkie XL,amazing insght of a topic im slightly less intimidated by now,and feel its time to move on to more organic home made synthesis, amazing Sir,your studio is a force to be reconed with! Peace
Bravo, you gave great performance!! Thank you as well for the tutorial videos, are inspiring!! Bravo about the stop smoking, keep it up!!
Awesome stuff! Always love when you 'jam out' like this (the guitar pedals video was awesome as well).
Such a fantastic performance, it got my juices flowing and I need to lock myself in my own studio tonight to sketch out some ideas this inspired. Oh no! You started smoking again! Keep trying to quit you will thank your self in the end.
I hope that is a reefer disguised as a cigarette, because of UA-cam protocol you know.
I think its just older video made before he actually stoped smoking.. :)
You can be right there, anyway, I like this, it reminds me off nineties ambient.
agree and tom you are being to modest :)
The performance was very organic, it felt like the machine became self aware when you started playing ..
well back to my matrixbrute...ehm
This is basically pornography.
except for the smoking part, but the coment about is a good thing about it

I'm speechless!

This is Berlin Schule with a dutch touch ;)
Awesome awesome awesome!!!!
Wow this reminds me of those computers from old movies from the 60s and 70s with them knobs and blinking lights. All that is missing are the big reel to reel tape drives.
Really enjoyed this!
Astonishing. I want a Moog Mother 32 and a DFAM just so I can try and emulate your sound. Thanks Junkie XL, this is inspiring
p.s. you should stick your audio-mucking-arounds-performances on Soundcloud or Spotify, just for our aural pleasure :D
Klaus Schulze or an early Tangerine Dream would be happy with that one. Impressive use of bass. Nice. Some of the sounds remind me strongly of Interstellar.
YES!! Finally!!!!! Thanks Tom
