I personally love the reverb/delay, and everyone who doesn't can be quiet. Tom doesn't need to do these FREE videos and content. He is doing them for his pleasure and especially ours. So sit back, enjoy, and shut up about it.
finnaly another broadcasting from the Computer Hell Cabin!!!! You are awesome guy. Rarely, people see someone with experience, who is willing to share knowledge and contributed to composer literacy. Thanks!!!
Thank you for continuing all the fantastic videos! I appreciate every single submission from film scoring through synth demos. To those who commented on the external effects. I don't think it's worth a comment. Hear around it. It's not that hard.
Even as a person who is totalny out of topic I rally enjoy Your videos cause You have thhis teaching manner in Your Way of speaking and expalaining things and seem to be a very patient person. I rally love to watch and listen people like You so pationate in what they are doing on daily basis.
Sometime around 1980 my older brother Tony bought a CS15 (model without the presets) secondhand. My first introduction to synthesis (I was about 13 at the time), it sounded awesome. Since then been a bit of a keyboard & techno junkie too. Listening to these Yams it's really evocative of that time in my life. Awesome vids Junkie, keep it up! PS absolutely love the gorgeous reverb, wish we'd had access to effects like that with the CS15 back in the day.
I feel like a kid looking through a candy shop window drooling, without a penny. Some great synths here. Great demo. Twice I had the chance to buy one of these,, but I didn't.unfortunatly. bet it ways a ton, but love the sound. well done thank you for uploading.Wow. Synth heaven does exsist.
Thank you Junkie XL! I have the CS-15D & love it! I greatly appreciate your tutorials & I'm baffled how anyone could criticize these when this very busy professional is doing these for free to help & inform us. Love your music & have bought lots of it.. :-)
Nice. I have a cs15. I love recording sounds and then sampling them into my sy99 and putting the samples through AFM... unbelievable sounds which you can not get unless you have this combination
The "crack" is usually caused by oxidation, which happens on that era electronics when certain potentiometers (volume, pan) are not used for a prolonged period of time. Usually the simplest fix is just take a graphite pencil and cover the contact area on potentiometer with graphite. Sometimes, fast knob twiddeling also helps. This issue is not caused by abuse, but underuse.
correct! Usually when its on for a few hours while turning knobs it disappears. Its always 22 catch. Do I leave them on all the time during a project? ( caps can dry out or overheating) or do I switch them on only for use?( tuning takes a while and knobs might be cracky)
This is a great video! I have a CS70m, CS30 and a SK30 and I really love the Yamaha analog sound. The cs30 sequencer is just the best for creating insane sounds and the cs70 sequencer is my favorite scratchpad for just trying out building ambiences and patches. Someday I'll get an 80 as well :)
junkiexlofficial lol, you made it sound cheap! The Deckard's Dream is $3800! Man, I wish I could afford these toys, the Deckard's Dream looks like years worth of fun! Thanks for all these fun videos, I'm just living vicariously through you and your amazing collections for now.... :-)
Don't forgetthe CS5 is smaller than the cs10 or cs10 (Martin L. Gore froM depeche mode plays the CS5, and it was his first synthesizer. and also the distorted legato/portamento lead on "a pain I'm used to"
Can you imagine getting one of these new back then. You'd be amazed by the high tech, and wonder what the future holds, little did we know back then. i'd have hated being a rodie.
@moog Dome the bigger ones are really heavy and awkward shaped, plus the flight case is big and heavy and adds to the weight. I recently had to lift a Yamaha SK30 up two flights of stairs on my own. It's the same size and weight of the Yamaha CS70m and looks similar as well.
Those were the glory days for Yamaha! I had a cs 60 for four years but it did not travel well. But the high pass filter was crazy and very slight movments contained lots of hamonic overtones. And the presets were all great starting points. Peace christo
Enjoyed the video very much. A big thumbs up what a trip down memory lane. Enjoyed the closed captioning even more. ....... Finally someone who confounds a voice translation app more than me.😎
I love that 15D. It wasn't on my radar before, but it is now. And I love the beautiful reverb. It's perfect for this family of synths. I wonder if it is hardware or software.
Between you and going through the Rob Papen book/DVD on subtractive synthesis, I've spent a lot of time recently watching and listening to Dutch men with synths.
Mr. Holkenborg, I have CS6x and very love it. Understand that it's completely different but if you ever need it I can change it to one day in your studio ;))
I like how you have a gate on your microphone so the room noise goes away when you play. Thanks for being so particular with details in everything you do! I was going to spend money with masterclass because of Hanz Zimmer and Cubase but this is so valuable. If you drop your cash app I will donate!
Once again fantastic stuff! - Tom would you be able to share the (preset) settings on the Eventide DSP 4000 when making these videos? It sounds awesome and like to reproduce , Many Thanks.!
Yamaha made all great synthesizers in their CS-serie! I have the smallest, the CS-5 ( with mod kit ), and it sounds really fat and great!I had also the great CS-10, but I swapped it for a Moog Slim Phatty-module.
I was left a cs15d from my late father in a beautiful case. Played it a few times although i dont know much about synths, that has just blew me away wow that sounded amazing what effects did you use on it pls Fantastic!!
Hey Junkie XL, I doubt you'll read this but I noticed you have an SX -240 above your emulator. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that puppy. Will it be included in a video soon?
In the mid 80's had a CS70m, not bad, did layering and split at the same time! Nice, but lack of control for both oscillators 1 & 2 was its weakness not only that but impossible to follow the CS80 and didnt sell well. Loved the sequencer in it though. Pre MIDI and weighed a ton, sold it and bought a new D50 in 1987 I still have.
Got CS-15D and CS-40m, I would say they are really complementary to others, such as Moog, Oberheim, Prophet, that I can compare, with their distinctive sounds. Some people noted there is perhaps too much reverb on CS15 /40 demo - I agree, but it also shows that these machines, imo, are very 'effectable' and perhaps especially CS-15D sound can take a ton of effects and still get even better and keeps its character, which is often not a case, as some otherwise powerful synths are easily over-effected and then sound becomes somehow messy. But maybe it's just my personal perception :)
The CS15D always seems to sound better in videos than the CS15. But everyone says the CS15 is much better than the preset-based CS15D. But that's not what my ears tell me. Can the CS15 make every sound the CS15D does? Is there anything about the CS15D that makes the sound unique compared to the more programmable CS15?
Heyyyy, you didnt cover the most unique & interesting part of the CS40m! You can have the LFO trigger the ADSR & basically shape your own waveform. Pretty fun when playing manually. Sad thing is, the EG is disabled when playing it via CV but you sample everything anyway so it shouldn't be a problem.
junkiexlofficial good point! I imagine it would take a lifetime to show every feature of every piece in your studio. Awesome vids, I cant stop watching, THANKS! =]
So you made us buy a CS15D, then a CS20M, then an SK30 (although admittedly that one doesn't show here, but it does have the CS family sound). Great vid as usual, very well done.
Well - you've officially ruined me :). I had no idea about the vastness or quality of the Yamaha analogue range beyond the CS80 (I am one of those Blade Runner obsessives). Then I stumbled upon this vid, and ended up buying a CS15D, then a CS20M, then just this week an SK30... That sound just has no equivalent. There's a lot of Roland here, one Oberheim and one Moog, but the CS's are something else entirely. So thank you for the discovery (but no thank you for the hole in my bank account ;P). Your vids are just as great as your music. Question for you : with the above kit (CS15D / CS20M / SK30, all like new) is it worth hunting for a CS70M ?
Hoi Tom, wat is je alltime favourite synth? De ik neem mee naar onbewoond eiland, wonderbaarlijk met elektriciteit (even geregeld) ;) Thanks ps. welke film zou je hebben willen gescored? en waarom.
Except for two you have all of the CS models? Looking around your studio it looks like you have all of the synths used in Top of the Pops bands from 1979-1989.
@@hoomanganjavi4314 watch the cs15 video's from marc doty. You can have two filters working for you. Feed the output to the input. CS15 is smaller too. CS40m is huge. CS15 has no presets...Cs15 is easier to find and cheaper. CS40m looks very cool with the yellow knobs and wood. But the frontpanels of the cs40m get some kind of rusty look under the paint. Kinda hard to see and explain in pics
I love the CS series. Something extremely organic and inspiring about their sound.
I personally love the reverb/delay, and everyone who doesn't can be quiet. Tom doesn't need to do these FREE videos and content. He is doing them for his pleasure and especially ours. So sit back, enjoy, and shut up about it.
Thank you, only small minded people offer criticism when someone is offering free tutorials to help & inform.
i'm a small minded person.
i don't mind reverb/delay either, but i think the tail end is abit too long and overall too saturated.
Amen!
finnaly another broadcasting from the Computer Hell Cabin!!!!

Love these video's! Keep them coming my fellow Dutch synthlover!
Awesome. I've always loved the sound of my cs15d. It's been a bit neglected as of late but you've inspired me to have it tuned up
Sometime around 1980 my older brother Tony bought a CS15 (model without the presets) secondhand. My first introduction to synthesis (I was about 13 at the time), it sounded awesome. There was a CS 5 too. I used to own it along with the CS 70 m and the CS 80. Great instruments!

I'd like to see that synthesizer repair shop that you are always talking about.
But you really have everything. It must be a wonderland of music in your house!!!
When watching his videos. I always find my admiring all the synths aside from the one he is talking about.
Legacy JunkieXl remix is still one of my favorite classics!!

Bedankt, Tom, voor al uw video's over al uw synthesizers die u met ons wilt delen, naast uw full-time job als filmcomponist. Well done 🎈

look for Deckard's dream. A japanese guy is rebuilding the CS80 from scratch for a 20th of the price
Would you buy a Deckard's dream? Have you played one?

And just tonight the rebuilt power supply blew in my CS70 :( I guess that's part of the enjoyment - Russian Roulette every time you turn it on
Two weeks later and I fully rebuilt the power supply on the cs70m. What a horrible pain, but nice its alive again :)
Don't forgetthe CS5 is smaller than the cs10 or cs10 (Martin L. Gore froM depeche mode plays the CS5, and it was his first synthesizer. and also the distorted legato/portamento lead on "a pain I'm used to"
was about to comment this also, its actually a pretty cool little synth, should not be forgotten about haha

Wow the CS15D , very unusual but sounds amazing!!
That CS15 blew my mind. So sweet.
CS-40m, 20M etc, All the white knobs can also be changed while a preset is active.
correct!!
Enjoyed the video very much.
A big thumbs up what a trip down memory lane.
Enjoyed the closed captioning even more. .......

Every time you touch stuff it just sounds amazing! I keep turning things and they rarely sound good lol
Man I missed out on a 70 back in the day . 200 bucks I've lamented this to the day
I love that 15D. It wasn't on my radar before, but it is now. And I love the beautiful reverb. It's perfect for this family of synths. I wonder if it is hardware or software.
Dude, you forgot the CS-5! They do exist! There's one in my studio. Had it since 1983.
Never heard anyone pronounce Yamaha like that but excellent & very educational video
Dit zijn zulke leuke videos! Dankje Tom voor het delen van je kennis, LP is besteld hoor :).
Hope to meet you someday in person to let you know how helpful these videos are. Love being exposed to new things I didn't know existed
CS40M was my first synth at age 16.
I hope the CS-60 and CS-70M video is coming soon!
Do you know, when the next episode comes of the CS's??
Greetings from Germany!

Amazing tutorial, thanks! Pity we didn't get to see the largest beasts, looking forward to it!
I spy with my little eye... a Roland VP330 Vocoder Plus and it's an early one with the rocker switches. Niceeee. :)
Freaking Masterclass that Yamaha never made. Thanks, Tom. Sorry you sold it all.
CS30 is totally unique in the entire CS series ... can do amazing things
This guy knows so much ! Thanks dude!
I really like the 30!
so nice and very good explain, thank you
Great insight into the yamaha synths thanks ☺👍
Great Tommi

Thank you for sharing these with us. If Villeneuve gets to make Dune, I hope you get the gig. :)
Yeahhh !!! I Love CS Filters !! :D

Very interesting! Yamaha was never really on my radar respective analog Synthesizers.
I love the reverb ! I would do the same anyway .
Amazing synths. Only thing missing is a CS-80
Tom is the man!
Smallest cs synth was actually the Cs-5! great video!
I was left a cs15d from my late father in a beautiful case. Played it a few times although i dont know much about synths, that has just blew me away wow that sounded amazing what effects did you use on it pls Fantastic!!
Wasn't there a CS5?
GNeuman I have it, used since 80s
And cs01
Hey Junkie XL, I doubt you'll read this but I noticed you have an SX -240 above your emulator. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that puppy. Will it be included in a video soon?

I need a Cs80.
Everyone needs a cs80
VCO8 Behringer is going to try to emulate the CS-80. Their D model, emulating the Minimoog D is excellent. Hope their CS80 is as well
I guess a very expensive outboard reverb was used also?
Got CS-15D and CS-40m, I would say they are really complementary to others, such as Moog, Oberheim, Prophet, that I can compare, with their distinctive sounds. Smallest is CS5. But the black ones are a different type from the wooden organ CS60,80 ones
Does the CS20M have real wood side panels?
did you ever do that CS70M tutorial?

So you made us buy a CS15D, then a CS20M, then an SK30 (although admittedly that one doesn't show here, but it does have the CS family sound). Great vid as usual, very well done.
Welcome haha. Same for me... CS15D and SK30. ;-)
Tom do u use the hmt tuning in cubase? And explain what it does ,steiny doesn't really say what it does
Wich reverb are you using on the CS15D?
lol the closed captioning put in omaha steaks when he was saying yamaha synths with his accent
Fascinating, as ever. :)
that crazy patch on the background :O @ 8.26
Whats the reverb Tom
i NEED to know, as well
Eventide DSP 4000
God yes, what is that Verb!!!???
Blackhole ?
why do you use that reverb all the time Tom?
The CS-20 or CS-40 sounds a lot like the synths used on the show "In Search Of" Maybe they were.
awesome, but why would you do a CS demo when two of the best ones are in for repair??
Well - you've officially ruined me :). I had no idea about the vastness or quality of the Yamaha analogue range beyond the CS80 (I am one of those Blade Runner obsessives). what do you think of the dx-series synths?
Hoi Tom, wat is je alltime favourite synth? De ik neem mee naar onbewoond eiland, wonderbaarlijk met elektriciteit (even geregeld) ;) Thanks ps. welke film zou je hebben willen gescored? en waarom.
Great part!!
Except for two you have all of the CS models? Looking around your studio it looks like you have all of the synths used in Top of the Pops bands from 1979-1989.
Do you use a preamp to get those synths into your DAW?!!
Duophoinic not polyphonic. What about the CS5?.
Have a cs 15 and cs40m... love both. Subtitles on this video, are funny indeed.
I'm trying to decide between these two... any advantages of the CS-15?

Where's the cs80?? :(
At the doctors? Mine is....... ;)
There is also a CS-30. I did own one.
0:52 I used to have one of these. Still kicking myself for trading it.
great !
