1:15 Willem Dafoe was getting really into his answer, you can see the emotion in his eyes, I wish Larry King just let him talk for the next minute, he clearly had a lot more to say.
They always do that. Get a major star in for an interview and then never shut up to let them tell their side. Failed actors trying to get a bit of limelight because they never made it big
Exactly Apollo. Ask a question then be quiet and listen to the response, right? As far as talk show interviewers go, I think Skavalan does a great job of asking hard questions in a respectful manner, then listening carefully. I’d check out his YT content
Especially the first time seeing the movie, and not knowing that he would show up, and the great cuts to the other soldiers in the helicopter. Lots of good acting in that movie.
King: "Did you enjoy the shoot?" Dafoe: "Yes, well it was interesting because..." King: "Did it take long to shoot?" Dafoe: "Uh, no... Not really, I was getting to that. So, most of the shooting was actually done with..." King: "It must be exhausting to work in that heat. I heard it was exhausting." Dafoe: "Well, when you like what you are doing it makes it very..." King: "Sounds like it was a great experience." Dafoe: "Yes... it... was."
I remember the theater during this scene. There were audible groans from the audience when they knew he was about to die and an overall sadness to see a protagonist meet his demise.
He's the actor I really appreciate the most...I was 8 years old when I watched his movie platoon ...but I don't know the title back then...while growing up i carry the feeling that someday I will again watch his movie...when I was in college I used to search for vietnam war hoping that I will find this movie ..but since I don't know the title I was not able to search..it ..infact I made a poem regarding the movie....way back highschool...until this evening I look for the best vietnam movie....and boommm finally I found it..but unluckily there's no more full video of it.... Ah I forgot to mention that the time I watched the spider man... i know that the Sgt in the movie platoon and the villain in spidy movie is a one man...only that he is now an old man...but still I can see his skills in acting...idol! From Philippines
So they used veterans who told them if a scene was accurate? THAT alone explains why this movie is so well done! Take the time to ask veterans, follow their instructions, and your movie is already great!
In Dale Dye's narration, he tells us how they insisted that each actor carried real weight on them. No backpack filled with cushions, nope, the real, agonizing, tortuous full load. So when you see the characters look drenched in sweat and looking miserable, exhausted, that's not just acting.
That was the big thing about this move at the time. Its authenticity. There were quite a few storylines in it that were shocking at the time. American soldiers killing each other was a big one. This movie was groundbreaking. I still have my VHS of it from 86. Too good.
One of the best films i grew up loving and being emotional to, not at my age of 23 I didnt know it was shot in the philipines, its a great honor as a filipino to know this, grewing up Im a great fan of Willem Dafoe.
I agree, not in good taste. I mean, but that's how grandparents are, will just blurt out a weird comments once in a while. like just yell out " MY HAIR".
Willem Dafoe is one of those people that isn’t seen as a conventionally handsome guy but that I find really attractive because of his personality, charisma and talent. Such a good actor.
"Buddy, you're in the wrong place at the wrong time." - Rick Masters from To Live And Die In L.A. :-) Out of all the films Willem Dafoe has starred in, he will always be Rick Masters and Sgt. Elias to me. Brilliant actor.
After going back and looking at the scene in Platoon they are discussing, you can totally see the detonator for the squibbs in Dafoe's left hand. I can't remember how many times I've watched this movie (and said scene) and not once did I notice it, but once you see the control in his left hand you can't "unsee" it. I did not see where he tried to ditch the control after it did not work, however.
Loved it then back in 1989 when I saw it, and still loves this movie..also isn't the tag line of this movie timeless...THE FIRST CASUALTY OF WAR IS INNOCENCE !
I find it annoying when Willam is answering a question and Larry but cuts to the next question. This is why I prefer a podcast, let William speak and really discuss each question. William Dafoe is an incredible actor, loved him in Platoon

Barnes wounded him although he thought Elias was dead. So it must have come as a shock to Barnes to see Elias running out of the jungle with a horde of Viet Cong right behind him. 😔 🙁

Robert Richardson did the cinematography - one of the best in the business. Never underestimate what a great DP can do to make a movie look like it is punching above its weight class.
@@finalascent Sure, the cinematography looks drop dead gorgeous. The filmmakers (director + camera director + cameraman) sold the movie in the opening shots.
@@finalascent Btw, I never thought and still not think that "Platoon" is punching above its weight class. It's in a class of its own. Btw, ever seen "Wild at Heart?" Totally overrated movie, proved to me Lynch is a total hack. It was made 4 years later for $10 Million. It's unbearable and agonizing to watch but it gives you about its money's worth.
@@AudieHolland It's not my intention to get into semantics. Obviously we both enjoyed and respected Platoon. And I agree that it's essentially in a class by itself, but it's still "punching above" its weight if you consider the relatively low budget (average "negative cost" for a film was around $10 mil at the time, IIRC) production outside of the studio system, and lack of major bankable stars (Platoon MADE stars out of so many of those cast members, but they were somewhat obscure at the time, save possibly Charlie Sheen). When the right talent in front of and behind the camera combine, sometimes true "movie magic" is created - Platoon is certainly one of those instances.
I will never forget the first time I saw Platoon (on tv) My heart broke when Sgt. Elias died, the good guys lost. But Chris Taylor got his revenge on Sgt. Barnes in the end
Thank you Willem, it was the saddest scene of all time, the hero dying alone and abandoned, but it was real.

The only talk show host (in my recent memory) that actually lets his guest finish answering the question is Conan.
I agree. But in defense some of that is to keep it moving. The hosts have scripted questions. And for time reasons.

The personification of Good. To remember no matter where you are, how tough it is, or how old you are. You are always your father's son.

I like him as Raven Shaddock in "Streets of Fire"!
