- We took on the Fan Dance challenge over Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons.
its a 15 mile hike that summits Pen y Fan twice! the special forces use this route on their selection, although they use alot more weight and have to complete it in under 4 hours 10! which is insane!
Its easy to navigate and as a hike makes for a great days challenge, we completed it in 5.5 hours.
half way through the video is a kit list and what we have packed in the bag, any questions drop them in the comment box!
Thank you for watching!

I have done it for 2 years. Ago What a hike it was my first time up lovely view I was lucky it was dry and sunny when I went up there
Jacobs ladder where the knees meet the chin. I did this when I did my Section commanders battle course at Brecon when I was 24 years old with 65lb on. She’s a climb but head down one foot in front of the other and breathe it’s amazing what the body can do.
That would be no walk in the park as a promotional course so a huge congratulations to you..
Typical Fan weather. Blowing a Hoolie and sideways rain.
Good effort buddy! The Roman road is my worst part too. Hate it haha
Hi Sam, love that mountain, it's my monthly walk, nowhere near as fast as you, but also weighted lol. Good effort 👌
Thanks a lot matey! Such a great place to walk, I’ll have to come back and try it weighted for sure
@Sam Culley AEE winter fan dance tomorrow, not mad enough to enter the winter run, but doing summer one again in july
Nice one Sam , good report and yes the Roman road is soulless and brutal…
Great video. BTW, you guys did really well.
Did the actual event this winter in driving wind and rain, loaded. 4.28mins. I couldn't see straight when I passed the phone box at the finish.
That’s epic mate fair play!
Your description of being in no fit state to see sounds familiar. In 2 days I'm doing my 5th Summer Fan Dance. Masters category so only carrying 25lb plus food & drinks. The Roman Road going out is fine, but coming back, yeah it's not my favourite either. Just praying that it's dry, the past 2 Summer one's have been either damp or wet. 🙈
Great video Sam! Looks like you had some lovely weather 😂
hahahaha thanks emma, all adds to the challenge right? 😂
Great to hear “bootie speak” again and liked the run down of sensible kit taken as I’ve seen people up Pen Y Fan wearing shorts, flip flops and t shirts not realising the difference between the weather on the low levels as opposed to that on top. Looking forward to seeing new videos - OARMAARM 👍🥾
Totally agree. Take the proper kit people, can't stress that enough. Weather can change abruptly in the mountains. We're talking 4 seasons in an afternoon. Better to have something with you & not need it, than to need it & not have it.
Cracking video Sam 💪💪👍
thanks for watching matey, much appreciated !
Great video Sam! Looks like you had a blast.. Gotta make sure you have your scran on those hills although im a bit of a nutty fiend sometimes 😝haha. Look forward to your next adventure.. ATB
hahahahaha mate, ill smash nutty toll the cows come home! thanks for watching buddy !
@@Samrculley Haha no worries dude always great videos on your channel!! Dont forget this time of year if you're cold out and about take a bit of Nelson's blood 😉🤪😆✌🏼👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks enjoyed the video .
Thanks for watching 😊
I sent my old pair of Hi-Tec Leather boots to a charity shop a couple of weeks ago, I can’t hike really these days, maybe going up Rivington Pike after driving half way up is more than enough. Anyway, as I said I gave my boots away, after I’d had them 25-30 years with little use for the past 20 years except walking the dog or around Rivington, the soles still look new but I’d scraped the front not long after buying them when I was up on Kinder, wishful thinking these days.
they lasted that long? thats insane! thanks for watching matey
@@Samrculley Yes, well used for a few years then my body wouldn’t let me do much but moved to Horwich 15 years ago so at the foot of Rivington Pike/Winter Hill and the West Pennine Moors so started doing a little more. Felt they were a little too rigid for my feet so got some cloth ones, though they’re waterproof I’m on my second pair in 6 years whereas my wife has just bought leather ones
Hi m8 my son did selection in the summer just gone he’s a marine too and he did the fan in 3.20 crazy what it can be done in with all that weight he weren’t the fastest either
That’s awesome mate! Incredibly fast!!
Sbs ?
@@jamesholland1006 no m8 he failed on final ex rolled ankle 20 miles in but he was going sas if he got through
@@Nofixedabode859 decent effort that , serious time on fan dance
you were only 1hr 20 over selection time and you walked it. if you had a proper go at it with weight and running the sections that can be run you'd be damn close I bet. great effort
I do fancy having a good go at it some time to be fair mate 👊👊👊
