Hahaha well its a big time investment to play a 15/10 game of chess and to throw away any chance of survival by playing a lazy move but more importantly by spending no time considering the consequences is just a disservice to your own time. Very funny though 😂
Thanks man, I think it's one of those ideas you've just gotta drill into your head (meeting Ng4 with f5 in many lines) and swarming the black king. After f5 it's honestly pretty intuitive to continue attacking especially when you know white is better. The issue is that moves like Nge2 rather than f4 are no good because black swarms with Ng4 and Qh4, like how we did in reverse this game. Gotta be brave to play the Vienna
I'd like to say thank you for your help! I've been losing a lot of games lately and I don't understand why? I've taken a break from chess for a while to rebuild myself and I've been watching your series. It helps me a lot. I play Caro-Kaan and Vienna and your series is really helpful for me. You deserve a million subscribers, playing chess could be much easier and more fun for others as it is for me, you and your subs. Again, thank you very much for your help❤.
Thanks so much for the incredibly kind comment :) Just very glad that people can find my commentary useful and to hear all the success stories of people in the comments sections! Would be great to see more of you in the comments sections so please feel free to ask any questions (even if they sound dumb) and I will answer every single comment as best as I can :)
@ChessCenturion bro how did you say 'yep this is the move i dont even need to calculate it' and then spend the next 5 minuets saying to yourself 'this cant be an idea' had me laughung SO LOUD
Another fantastic video! As an adult in my 40s just learning chess, I really appreciate the way you explain your thought process-it makes everything so much more approachable. I decided to focus on the Vienna and Caro based on your videos, and I’ve been binge-watching a ton of your content. God willing, one day I’ll reach the stars and hit 2000 Elo. I always say, age is nothing but a blunder! Thanks for making these videos and keeping the grind fun
Thank you mate, that's exactly what I'm going for :) I hope you're able to get a general sense of the plans and important lines in the Vienna and Caro through my videos but most importantly just enjoy chess!
@ChessCenturion Finding them great! I love playing against opponents unfamiliar to the gambit's theory where I get 1. e4 e5 2. nc3 nf6 3. f4 exf4 4. e5 ng8 Right now I am playing the Vienna shenanigans in the 1000-1200 elo range.
Great video as usual. 6:52 i was wondering why you didn't just defend the threat with nh3 then i realized that it's a bad move after the queen comes to h4 and gives a check
Yeah that was my initial idea but it's just too passive really, I feel like it's such a big theme in these aggressive Vienna positions where both sides just have to keep attacking because if I stop attacking, I probably just lose
Yeah pretty much, white had to waste so much time taking the rook which allowed me to launch a more deadly counterattack since mine involved way more pieces
To be honest, I don't really enjoy playing Nf3. The main issue is my rating😅. Nf3 opens up a lot of options for my opponents, and players at my level often become unpredictable with their moves. I find Qf3 to be a safer option for me.
@ChessCenturion I get twice the wins than against Na5 Bb3 Nxb3. Specially against strongly rated opposition like 2300, the only times I could ever defeat them was to keep the light Bishop alive at all costs.
Wow amazing game, it was awesome to see you find the best moves f5 and f6! I'm a bit surprised that you didn't consider Bg5 after the opponent castled because you're developing with tempo and f6 is not possible, although if your opponent plays like a human and takes the rook instead of the knight after Nh3 then Ng5 is completely winning and a much better line as you proved
Haha I was really proud of myself for f5 admittedly 😅 I thought Bg5 was just a 1 move threat and only blocked my knight from going to g5 in the long run if that makes sense. These really are the games which make the Vienna so enjoyable!
@ It’s in the Italian. e4,e5,Nf3,Nc6,Bc4,Nf6,d4. This is the first gambit, if black takes he is likely down a piece or a few pawns from the opening. Up until 1400-1500 this is extremely good. Max Lange d4 gambit happen in a similar position, only difference being black has played Bc5 and white has castled. Black plays exd4 and white follows up with e5 and attack the knight and black is in most games worse or equal if opponent knows what he is doing
25:34 That’s not what being a tempo down means; here you could just say “same position but without these moves included”. Being a tempo down means it’s the same position but with the other person to move such that somewhere you effectively lost a turn (e.g by pushing a pawn 1 square twice instead of 2 where you could’ve). This is because a tempo is only a half move (that is one player’s turn) also called a ply. Hate to be that pedantic guy lol
Ahh right so my problem was Qh4 ideas which after g3 would hang my knight on h3. Essentially, Nh3 addresses the immediate threat but allows an even greater threat. I need to counterattack rather than focus too much on defence, a very common Vienna motif
Thanks man, and thank you for asking about it! Inevitably I will gloss over moves during the videos that I miss or mentally dismiss quickly without verbalising it so I'm sure others will find this comment thread useful
@ChessCenturion correct I meant H3 . But you have two options before you played d3. You can play pawn H3 or you can play pawn A3 which I prefer, leaving space for your bishop if it gets attacked by the knight. You dont want to lose your white bishop and it is totally safe all game on A2 if it does get attacked. . . You have to be aware of this opponent set up playing the vienna. You dont have to protect E4 as your knight protects it. Delay the D3 pawn so you can protect against that fork. D3 can be delayed I always play A3 first . If the knight jumps into D4 instantly attack with knight E2. So my move order before D3 would be A3 then H3. Then D3 then pawn F4 trust me i have seen this attack hundreds of time. Im surprised you play the vienna and have never seen this. This guy should of castled Queen side he had a ton of time and was in no danger if he knew the correct move order.. You played well but your opp made a critical error king side castle.
Yeah i am aware of it but the problem is, after Nf6, d3 is pretty much forced unless you play Nf3 and go for normal Italian lines because if Nf6, a3 for example then Nxe4! and black is better after Nxe4 and d5!
The thing is, memorisation is useful but when your opponent plays something you've never seen before, you need to understand why that's a bad move in order to punish it. Understanding the ideas, plans and concepts helps you to do this, memorisation does not which is why I preach it so hard in my videos.
You discuss many ideas through the game. Then when you analyze, analyze the game not every variation. I lose you when you go down all the rabit holes quickly. Just my $0.02
Yeah that's fair enough. I like to go down some rabbit holes that I think will be useful for the viewers or just my own curiosity but totally understand if they seem irrelevant or hard to follow. As always feel free to ask any questions about that kinda thing in the comments :)
"Spending 10sec on taking the rook, that's irresponsible" got me laughing real hard.😅😂😂
Never knew responsiblity was a thing in chess.😅
Hahaha well its a big time investment to play a 15/10 game of chess and to throw away any chance of survival by playing a lazy move but more importantly by spending no time considering the consequences is just a disservice to your own time. Very funny though 😂
Wow, that was one hell of a courageous attack. I was on the edge of my seat! Great game Alex (F5!). I don't think I will chance that line.
Thanks man, I think it's one of those ideas you've just gotta drill into your head (meeting Ng4 with f5 in many lines) and swarming the black king. had me laughung SO LOUD
Hahahaha I mean I knew Nxd5 had to be the move but the follow up, no clue XD

I do like how you go thru the initial game, well done!
Thanks man, I hope you found it useful!
Great video. I've been studying the 3 knights -- perfect timing!
That's great timing then! I've never seen d5 like this but great to know the same plans work as against d6
Been using the Vienna Game and Gambit as my main lines as white recently because of your videos!
Love that man, how are you finding them?
@ChessCenturion Finding them great! I love playing against opponents unfamiliar to the gambit's theory where I get 1. e4 e5 2. nc3 nf6 3. f4 exf4 4. e5 ng8 Right now I am playing the Vienna shenanigans in the 1000-1200 elo range.
Yeah I assume those kind of lines must happen way more than they should be XD
This was a really great game! A nice refutation to Black's idea.
thanks man, these copycat variations are always WILD
Congrats! A great attack game. 🔥
Thanks man, do you play the Vienna?
@ChessCenturion I play the Vienna occasionally. 1. b3 is my main weapon.
1.b3 is pretty solid. There's a guy at my chess club who's like 1850ish who swears by it snd it's very good
Great video as usual. 6:52 i was wondering why you didn't just defend the threat with nh3 then i realized that it's a bad move after the queen comes to h4 and gives a check

It looked like losing the rook was the lure to get the win.
Yeah pretty much, white had to waste so much time taking the rook which allowed me to launch a more deadly counterattack since mine involved way more pieces
1:40 Many players play d3, Nf3 and Qf3. What do you think is the best option? In my opinion, Qf3 seems more direct to me in Vienna Mainline.
I've been toying with Nf3 recently but always feel more comfortable with Qf3 positions
To be honest, I don't really enjoy playing Nf3. The main issue is my rating😅. Nf3 opens up a lot of options for my opponents, and players at my level often become unpredictable with their moves. I find Qf3 to be a safer option for me.
Yeah agreed, lots of people know the main line of Bc5 d4 Bb4 as well and a quick c5 which sucks a lot of fun from it for me
Make a video about basic principles to follow and also make a video about tactics
The problem is that they are incredibly broad topics mate, makes it very difficult to make a video about them
@ChessCenturion ok bro then suggest me some videos
Sorry what do you mean?
@ChessCenturion can you some other channel for that topic man
Hanging Pawns has some great videos on that kinda thing!
I play a3 instead of d3 to save the Bishop to a2 if it's attacked, though I play the rest of the game one tempo behind.
Interesting idea, does that score well for you?
@ChessCenturion I get twice the wins than against Na5 Bb3 Nxb3. Specially against strongly rated opposition like 2300, the only times I could ever defeat them was to keep the light Bishop alive at all costs.
Clean
cheers bro

I've played the Max Lange gambit and had great success with it but now the question is if Vienna is better
I actually don't know the max lange gambit, how does it go?
@ It’s in the Italian. e4,e5,Nf3,Nc6,Bc4,Nf6,d4. This is the first gambit, if black takes he is likely down a piece or a few pawns from the opening. Up until 1400-1500 this is extremely good.

that's interesting. Kinda a worse version of the Vienna gambit lines of e4, e5, Nc3, Nf6, f4, exf4, e5 - but far more likely to occur?
25:34 That’s not what being a tempo down means; here you could just say “same position but without these moves included”. Haha no it's a good point and I suppose tempo down wasn't quite the correct terminology there. I hope it's clear what I'm trying to say tho lol
Would nh3 have worked? protecting f2?
At what time in the video mate?
@ChessCenturion During your long think from about 4.20 after he played ng4
Ahh right so my problem was Qh4 ideas which after g3 would hang my knight on h3. Essentially, Nh3 addresses the immediate threat but allows an even greater threat. I need to counterattack rather than focus too much on defence, a very common Vienna motif
Now I’ve seen the end of the game I fully agree. Well played.
Thanks man, and thank you for asking about it! Inevitably I will gloss over moves during the videos that I miss or mentally dismiss quickly without verbalising it so I'm sure others will find this comment thread useful
i always play Vienna game. YOu need to play pawn H3 sooner. Stops the bishop pin on your knight and stops the knight from infiltrating.
I assume you mean pawn h3? But no you actually don't need to play it sooner. Ng4 doesn't work for the reasons shown in the video :)
@ChessCenturion correct I meant H3 . But you have two options before you played d3. You can play pawn H3 or you can play pawn A3 which I prefer, leaving space for your bishop if it gets attacked by the knight. I'm a 1000 rated player so cut me some slack for asking this, but at 10:00 why can't you just play the simple move Nh3?
Because of Qh4+. If you block the check with g3 you lose the knight, and if you move the king you're getting slaughtered
@Croggidy ahh makes sense
Yeah exactly right from Croggidy, the black pieces will just swarm too quickly
I’m here way too early
Bro gonna get the secret Vienna sauce before everyone else
Because of your videos I’m almost 1000 but my goal is to be 1600 one day
Awesome dude! What do you think is currently holding you back from improving?
@ChessCenturion probably not understanding the reasons why moves are played I tend to just memorise moves
The thing is, memorisation is useful but when your opponent plays something you've never seen before, you need to understand why that's a bad move in order to punish it.
