11:33 Those strut bottom mounts are not supposed to be touching the lower rear control arms like that. Im gonna guess those are not Civic Hatch part but Sedan Parts. They should be floating in that bushing not resting on the arm. This will cause friction and noise on that location.

... and in 1990/91 the VTEC came to Europe. 150HP in the CIVIC like this, 160HP in the CRX. And I think with this generation of Civic and CRX, in USA it was never higher than Si types. The higher engines were missing low RPM torque, and Honda felt this is not acceptable for US customers.

11:22 Metal to Metal here Wizard. That strut is not supposed to connect to that rear control arm and touch. Aftermarket part and wrong strut that has been damaged by this. That bottom bracket is bent due to banging on it. No movement in the rear wheels when you checked because this is holding tension. Put a jack under either side and watch the bushing at that point as you release the bind. The should not be touching, Just floating in the bushing. The pass side one is even cutting into control arm.

I just retired my red '90 Civic Si 5spd, this car's twin. At 320,000 miles the engine needed work (burning oil) and the rust was worse than your customer car (though it hadn't reached any critical suspension mounting points) so I passed it on to the cousin of a coworker who loves fixing and modding these. But the car still runs and has the original starter, alternator, shocks, ball joints (I did do tie rod ends). I replaced the transmission bearings at 165,000 miles (It had been running the factory recommended 10w30 motor oil - I recommend Redline MTL for better protection). Did the head gasket (and valve seals) at 280,000. Oh, it still has the original brake master cylinder and calipers (I may have done a rear wheel cylinder). I did add a relay to the headlight low beam circuit to reduce the load on the headlight switch contacts (they were beginning to wear). The rear trailing arm bushings were cracking but it still drove beautifully.
This was really "peak Honda" in quality and a really fun/cool car to drive.

Looking back probably not the most sound investment. Probably should've taken advantage of being able to save that much as a teenager but i loved that little car. We painted it 2000civic si blue and i had a friend who's older brother had a 1999 civic si with new wheels and i bought his si wheels and tire. I work on 80's and 90's cars every day. The main issue i see now is poor earths. Use a Multimeter to check resistance between battery Negative and a clean spot of alloy on the inlet manifold. Should be zero ohms. You will likely see 3 or even 7 ohhms. Which means bad earthing. This means the ECU is reading incorrect values from the sensor and so it throws a code. When the sensor is just fine. Another issue is failed Capacitors in the ECU where they are 20+ years old. So i do lots of ecu repairs now. But you have to be quick as the Electrolyte from the leaking capacitors can destroy the circuit board if left.

Sold it to a mechanic but it really needed a body guy. The a/c was an option at over $1500 canadian,IN 1980. Those wheels also look like same era Accord, most Si's came with steelies and plastic covers. Power glass sunroof was well used.

I have a '94 DX. I bought it in '04 and it has been garaged ever since. Zero rust, (173k on the clock) nearly pristine interior, the driver's seat has some entry wear, but it's not come apart yet. The paint is a bit scratched up but otherwise still nice and black. It's got almost the same front end, with the GLASS headlights, so no cataracts like the modern junk. I did replace the motor a few years after I got it (It was for my mom, but my name is on the title.) at the mechanics recommendation, as he said to fix it would cost more than just dropping a salvaged motor in it. It still runs like a top. Had the coil go bad a few years ago, cost me

Had an '89 Integra and 2 GFs had an 87 Civic. and Civic Si. What memories. These were amazing cars. Simple, reliable and FUN to drive. Your time on the ECU would be better spent looking at the component side first, paying attention for bulging/leaking electrolytic capacitors. Cold/defective solder joints likely made have made themselves known looong before now. Caps fail with age.
Bulging will be domed top, leaking will be black or gray liquid at the top or mostly at bottom of caps.

I had a '91 civic DX four-door sedan and was very happy for the 21 years I had it.
I made a concerted effort to buy a new car in 1991, first chose to consider American sedans. The Chevy, Olds, Buick, and Ford sedans all seemed lacking in comfort, headroom, handling/performance, along with fit and finish, and all around visibility from the driver's seat.
Even the Toyota Corolla sedan I test drove had quality issues about it.
Ah! But the '91 Civic I test drove filled the bill with the issues I had for buying a new vehicle:
    - Seat comfort
    - Fit and finish
    - Headroom
    - Acceptable handling and performance.
    - All around visibility from the driver's seat was satisfactory.
Five downsides of the '91 Civic:
    - Front disc brakes didn't hold up well, and I'm not an aggressive driver.
    - The annual expense for tuneups and engine valve adjustments.
    - The rubber CV boot had a propensity to deteriorate due to its location near the exhaust pipe.
    - The breaking of the upper motor mount, having three replaced in the car's 235K miles life.
    - The failure of newly installed AC units (two) that were equipped to handle the environmentally friendly refrigerant.
    Two aspects that surprised me:
    - The front MacPherson struts never needed replacing.
Up to that time, I was familiar with previous vehicle's shock absorbers needing replacement after so many miles of driving. When I asked the Menlo Honda service department about when the struts needed replacement, I was told they're no replacement schedule for the struts . . . that unless they failed, they should last the life of the vehicle. *I was stunned by that answer!*
Mind you, this was happening in the 1990s, where there were no online info sources to turn to for corroboration; I had to take the service department rep at his word for that. That dealership lost hundreds of dollars of business that I was willing to pay for to do the struts replacement.
    - The strength of the chassis and bodywork, as a rear collision knocked-off the rear bumper. The rear body work was a bit crumpled, but new tail lights and re-attaching the rear bumper were easily done; with the integrity of the chassis unchanged.

Wish I could post a pic...but I had a 91 Si in teal green. It was such a fun car. This was when buying a Honda made you feel like you were getting waaaaay more quality than for the money you paid. I put aftermarket Tokico struts on mine and it handled great.

I still have my teal 91 Si! Love it to bits, and never intend to sell. Only a crash or a theft will ever take this baby away from me. Unless my info is wrong, Honda indeed did sell these -- and the Integras of the era -- at a loss on purpose, to build a base of lifelong fanboys. It appears to have worked. Our cars are the, "Costco rotisserie chickens," of the car world.
My best friend is a mechanic, and while under my car one time, I kept hearing him say, "Holy sh*t!" every so often.
      "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," he said, coming out from under the car with a part in his hand, "Look at this part! It's waaaaay better quality than it needs to be! And it's buried down in there where nobody was every gonna see it! Honda made sure they did everything on this car, 11 out of 10!"
I can't post a link to pics of my car or YT will delete my message, but let me know if you wanna see pics, eh? Cheers! =)

Same goes for the early Integras. Luckily, out of my 12 cars, I have a 91 Mazda 626 LX Hatchback 5 speed , which other than faded clear coat, is in perfect condition body, interior, and mechanically. Through a long seller on Ebay I have been able to stash away all OEM components for two Mazdas so that this car can be on the road another 30+ years. The most expensive of the engine, transmission, accessories, and suspension parts was the OEM Denso AC compressor at $79. Super easy car to work on.
