  • As a former RAF Qualified Flying Instructor and fighter pilot for 20 years, I teach you how to spin the F-5E in DCS.
    Spin training, also know in the civilian world as 'Upset Prevention Recovery Training' (UPRT), is a handling skill that gives military pilots confidence in flying their aircraft in dynamic situations.

    Nice to see a professional doing what he does best, I see a lot of similarities with the techniques we teach over here. Basically everything is done the same except recovering with the buffet (wing secondary stalling) since we don't have the control surface authority nor TWR to afford it in the civilian sphere. Regards fom Finland, from an Upset Prevention and Recovery instructor on the Extra 300. Keep it up!

    To maximise acceleration without losing to much altitude, in the F5 push to get a load of 0.25 G's. For the closed circuit we would come up to initials with 300kts, make a midrunway turn idle thrust. Speed dropping through 250kts gear down. At the perch fly 195kts +fuel and on final 165kts + fuel. There was a difference of 5kts between the NF5A and the NF5B. If I remember correctly the A had to be flown 5KTS faster.

    • @FastJetPerformance
      @FastJetPerformance  3 роки тому

      Thank you, Frank - I'd read that it was 165 in the finals turn throughout which was obviously wrong - so 165+ on rollout is what I'd expect.
      Thank you for the knowledge, it's much appreciated.

    Nice video. Haven't come across your channel before but liked what I saw and heard. I started DCS last year and had about 5 months use before some health problems reared their ugly mugs. Am just starting again and I had forgotten how in-depth it is. You make it look simple, experience and knowledge and skill really do make a difference don't they? I thought I would get in the cockpit and simply "know" what to do because I saw "Aces High" and "Top Gun", lol.

    Hey Tim ever heard of the Hawk post spin incident where after the spin recovery they brought up the throttle and nothing happened? Thinking the engine was in some kind of stall they did a stopcock and relight to no avail. Deadsticked it into Llanbedr (tea & medals!). Throttle linkage had broken or rather the spin had made a linkage work loose. Always be prepared for the unexpected! ABCD and R (runway in gliding range, ha). Happened to a mate of mine on the same course.

    So I thought you were insane when I first watched your videos in the F-5E. I haven't flown it much since the Hornet, and probably none since the Tomcat released. Back then it just wouldn't depart. Like nothing could make it depart at all. It was like a fly by wire jet. I took it out the other day and decided to give spinning a go. And ho yeah it went. Spins, accelerated spins. Proper recovery needed, and it you get really stupid the wings come off. So yeah I think I like it again.

    I fly competition aeros in the RV-8 and spin recovery is always to the vertical to draw a vertical line on an intended heading before recovery that is pulled with the speed requirement for the next figure in mind. - Not showing off, honest, just saying for the benefit of other viewers there are a lot of options and refinements available once one is beyond getting the thing out of the spin reliably. Definitely look at using SRS for the server, it is far more realistic and different bands/frequencies can be used for wingmen pairs etc; you won't have to listen to anyone slurping the tea either. You could also control/view your individual students using a server GCI/commander slot if you have Combined Arms, and provide human ATC. On our server we meet on Discord to discuss tactics but flying is strictly SRS, which works well.

    In real life Spinning a T-38 / F-5 was not a good idea...was actually a prohibited Manoeuvre in the 38. The reason for not being able to Deadstick a T-38 / F-5 is, that windmilling RPM are not sufficient to generated enough Power for the Hydraulics for Control at Landing Airspeed...

      Yes, we do spin the F-5 in Shadowlands (against the manual's advice) to demo spinning but for 2 turns max else it becomes unrecoverable. And the PFL at idle/shutdown does work in DCS but the speeds are pretty high - the manual agrees with you and says to not do this, obvs!
