Your lifting technique works wonderfully on this subject. It improved the value contrasts, and made the sea lion's skin folds look much more realistic. It also worked really well on the rock. It gave it the illusion of dimension.

You’ve got a VERY good eye for color Monique - that’s exactly what it was - Tundra Violet (I just forgot at the time of narration and called it gray) 💕💕💕as a color nerd I am genuinely impressed because it could have been anything including Daniel smith moonglow 👌👌👌

Its a sea lion. We have them everywhere here (Vancouver/ Victoria). LOVE how you painted this. It's wonderful to see something new. I'll never stop watching your florals etc but this was cool to see.

To answer your question ,I would probably use many colors from blues and purples to pink and ochre to create an under painting and overlay that with a bluish grey. You have made me get a habit to using underpainting on everything 😅. As always love this little wonderful and playful painting of yours❤❤❤

Love it! I didn’t think of pink - this is something to explore 👌 I Definitely see blues and ochre for an underpainting - thank you 💕🦭

Yes sea lion. It has ears and large front flippers that can be used to help it “ walk” on land. Beautiful rendering! Love how you use colours.

I am glad having seen this video.
I knew this technic but it did not worked so well cause i used a round brush not a flat brush. so, thanks for the good advice. ❤
I would use purples, light ochre and even a cool bright red for the underpainting, and then grays for the next layer.

Sealions have ears (as in exteral flaps, rather than just the ear-holes), seals don't, so I would guess that's a sealion. Beautifully executed, either way.

Wow! I love how you did the background, more a suggestion to keep the focus on the subject. I'm gonna have to try that approach! Thanks for tip on using the flat brush, I'd been using round and it just wasn't working.
I'm just starting out, so my colors are limited to a few Daniel Smith tubes I bought, plus a cheap set of pan paints. From the ones I have, I'd start with a mix of buff titanium, burnt umber, and Payne's blue gray until I got a very neutral, soft color for the under-painting and highlights. I'd start dropping in color with moonglow because it has really interesting undertones and can be made into a darker gray if you build it up. I'd mix in Payne's blue grey for the shadows. I've been wanting to try DS shadow violet and I wonder how that might work.
So far I love the Primatek colors and I think letting some of the extreme granulation happen might make really cool effects for animal hides. Like maybe hematite or burnt tiger's eye might give a cool leather like effect.
But this month I'm buying rhodonite as a substitute for opera pink because it's not fugitive, and it's almost as bright. I need to buy my basic warm RBY primaries now since I got my cool CMY primaries last time. So I can't get many of the fun Primatek colors until I get my split palette set up!

Love this video so so so much! These are sea lions 🦭 they are so cute ! The difference between the two is that sea lions have larger flippers that they use to “walk around” land on, whereas seals have smaller flippers and tend to roll and wiggle about. Sea lions also have external ears flaps. Seals ears are hidden. Hope that helps! Totally want to try this piece now. ❤❤❤

Well, this is different from the usual. A Sunday surprise. I don't know why I was smiling throughout this video ❤ That's a difficult question to answer because the colour choice would depend on lighting during the time of day.

I realized I tend to go back for some “muddy” color sketches after particularly complex botanicals. Last time I needed a break from pink it was a brown moose 😊 but back to flowers (and mushrooms) next week! 💕

Holbein's Mineral Violet, Holbeins Raw Sienna, and Blue Apetite Genuine from Daniel Smith. Thank you. I would like any suggestions for my painting of LaCrosse sticks being held by a girl's high school team standing in a circle - I'm thinking of a dark to lighter wash for the background, and how will I get the mostly blurred sticks (with one or two in focus) accomplished. Your lifting video of these seals helped here.
